J J. WALTON.
LAMP BOX FOR CARS.
No. 825,185, Patented Aug. 25, 1885.
l l e I Jv r E T0]? .7" M/ WWW MW Mitten STATES ATENT OFFIQEO JOSEPH J. XVALTOX, OF NEVARK, NIHV JERSEY.
LAMP-BOX FOR CARS.
ESPECIPICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 325,135, dated August 25, 1885.
Application filed March 19, 1555.
To aZZ whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, J osErH J. WALTON, of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lamp Boxes for Cars; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form apart of this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents a vertical section of the lamp-box passing through the detachable bottom and attached spring-catch. Fig. 2 is a plan view ofthe detachable bottom with springcatch attached.
This invention has relation to improvements in lamp-boxes of cars, being especially applicable to street-cars; and it consists in the construction and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
deferring to the accompanying drawings by letter, A designates a lamp-box for a car. The box A is of general rectangular form, and provided with the side opening, A, and central bottom opening, A preferably ot'circular contour. The opening A is rectangular in shape and covered by the door 13, which is hinged at its upper edge to the upper edge of the opening A, as shown. The lower edge of the door is provided with the metal guard b to prevent it wearing when engaging the springcatch, hereinafter described.
0 is a disk-shaped detachable bottom, preferably of plate metal, and provided around its horizontally-flanged edge with a number of openings, 0, by means of which and the screws or pins 0 it is attached to the bottom of the lamp-box below the opening A".
On the edge of the bottom 0, below the door 13, is made the radial recess D, which runs down to the floor of the bottom and has its lower or inner end covered by the transverse metallic guard-plate d. The guard serves to prevent the spring-catch from being depressed too far.
E is a metallic spring-plate, the inner end of which is secured to the upper surfaces of the bottom 0. The plate E lies radially upon (X0 model.)
the bottom 0, and conforms to the curvature thereof, passing outward through the upper part of the recess D.
The outer end of the plate has formed on it the transverse catch F, provided with the downwardly'and outwardly inclined engaging-suriacef.
G is the lamp, resting in the bOX ith its base over the opening A. The lamp is usually horizontally flanged above its base, as at g, the base resting in the opening A, and the flange g on the floor of the lamp-box.
\Vhen the bottom G is attached to the lampbox, the engaging surface fis in position to receive the lower edge of the door as the latter falls. The weight of the door presses the spring-catch downward, and the shoulder of the catch F rises on the outer surface of the door as the latter passes inward.
The bottom 0, besides being ornamental, serves to catch the dripping from the lamp, and by permanently securing the spring-catch to the bottom 0 the parts are more quickly and easily put together, and are less liable to get out of adjustment.
I am aware that detachable bottoms have been used in connection with lamp-boxes, and therefore do not claim such construction, broadly.
Having described my invention, I claim The combination, with the rectangular lampbox A, adapted to be secured within a car and provided with the openings A and A, and the door B, having the metal guard b on its lower edge and hinged at its upper edge within the opening A, of the dish-shaped bottom 0, removably secured below the opening A and provided with the recess D and guard-plate d, and the plate E, provided with the catch F and surface f to engage the guard b on the lower edge of the door as the latter falls and hold the door closed, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I aifix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOSEPH J. \VALTON.
