AUTOMATIC TAP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 325,072, dated August 25, 1885.
Application filed September 1G, 1894. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern,.-
Bc it known that I, ADAM J. GnYnR, Jr., of Railway, in the county of Union and State of N ew Jersey, have invented a new and ImprovedV Automatic Tap for Barrels, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Referencel is to be had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, in which a sectional elevation of my improvement with a protecting cap attached is shown applied to a barrel.
The invention will lirst be described in connection with the drawing, and then pointed out in the claims.
A represents the tap, which is screwed into the barrel-head B, and C represents the protecting cap or cover, which is hinged to the head l in such position that the cap is adapted to he closed over the tap A when the couplingnut D and pipe E are removed from the tap, thus protecting the tap from injury and from becoming filled with dirt. The tap A is composed ol' the main shell a, inner shell, b, spindle d, springe, and stopper f. placed upon the end ofthe spindle cl, inside ofthe barrel, for closing the openings i made in the diaphragm j, that closes the inner end of the shell (t. The spindle d passes freely through a central opening made in the diaphragm j. At its outer end the shell a is screw-tlu'eaded, as shown at g', to receive the above-mentioned coupling nut D, and it is hanged, as shown at h, and beyond this flange it is externally screw-threaded, as shown at g, adapting the shell a to he screwed into the barrel-head B. The inner shell, b, slides freely within the shell c, and the spring e is placed upon the spindle d, within the shell ce, and acts between. the diaphragm j and the inner end of the inner shell, b, so that when the coupling-nut D and pipe E are removed the spring forces the shellband spindled outward and brings the stopper f into close contact with the inner end of the shell a, thus automatically closing the tap by simply nncoupling the pipe E.
The stopper j" may be of any suitable construction, but I prel'er to form it of the block 50 f, of soft rubber, held upon the screw-threaded portion of the spindle d by the nuts fifa, so
that the stopper may be adjusted upon the spindle d. rlhe block of rubber f is backed by the washer Z, and it is recessed at the front,
as shown at f", to receive the nut f3, so that 5 5 the nut will not interfere with the closing of the tap.
The inner end of the inner shell, Z), is slotted, as shown at Z/, to permit the liquid in the barrel to pass out through the tap when it is open, and the shell I) is made of such length relative to the length of the shell c and the distance of movement necessary to close the stopperf against the inner end of the shell a that when the stopper is so closed the outer end of the shell b will protrude a short distance from the outer end of the shell a, so that when the coupling-nut D and pipe E are again applied to the tap the end of the pipe E, being drawn down by the coupling-nut D, will force the shell b, spindle d, and stopper finward, and thus automatically open the tap.
The cap or cover G is formed or provided with an arm, C', that comes tlat against the barrel-head B when the cap is closed over the tap A, so that the revenuestamp F may be pasted to the barrel-head over the arm C', so that the tap cannot be opened without mutilating and destroying the stamp. The cap C may be locked in closed position by any suitable means.
Having thus described myinvention, Iclaim ncw,and desire to secure by Letters Pal ent l. An improved automatic tap consisting of the externallyscrew-threaded outer shell, a, provided with the flange h at its outer end, and having a series of apertures, i, at its inner end, the sliding inner shell, Z), having the slotted end b', the spindle d, secured to the slotted end ot' the inner shell and projecting through the outer shell, the spring e on the stem d, with its ends resting against the inner and outer surfaces of the inner and outer shells, respectively, and the stopperf, adjustably secured on the said stem outside ot' the outer shell, substantially as herein shown and described.
