(Cl. 173-44) This invention relates generally to a feed bar arrangement for rock drills and more specifically to the arrangement of guiding means on the feed bar for making possible longitudinal displacement of the rock drill on the feed bar as well as the feed bar on the support carrying the bar. The primary object of the invention is to provide a feed bar arrangement for rock drills having a simplified arrangement of the guiding means for the rock drill reciprocable on the feed bar and for the feed bar proper reciprocable on a suitable support. Another object of the invention is to provide a lightweight feed bar v arrangement of the aforementioned character of strong and durable construction and with easily replaceable components. A further object of the invention is to provide a feed bar arrangement for rock drills of the aforementioned character in which the distance between the axis of the drill on the feed bar and the central plane defining the extension of the guiding means for providing slidable guided movement of the feed bar on a suitable support is small, thereby improving the force distribution in the guiding means under the action of lateral forces on the rock drill. A still further object of the invention is to provide a feed bar arrangement of the aforementioned character in which the throw for the slidable guided movement of the feed bar on a suitable support is of equal length with the feed throw of the drill on the feed bar.
The above and other objects of the invention will become obvious from the following description and from the accompanying drawing in which an embodiment of the invention is illustrated by way of example. It should be understood that this embodiment is only illustrative of the invention and that various modification may be made within the scope of the claims without departing from the scope of the invention.
In the drawing FIG. 1 shows partly in section a side view of a feed bar arrangement according to the invention. FIG. 2 shows partly in section an enlarged rear view on the line 2-2 in FIG. 1. FIG. 3 is a top view of' the central part of the arrangement in FIG. 1 with the rock drill removed. FIG. 4 is an enlarged sectional view of a detail of the feed bar in FIG. 2.
The feed bar arrangement for rock drills illustrated in the figures consists of an elongated guiding frame which may be mounted as by means of bolts 11 on a suitable supporting structure, for example a carrying member 12 of a drill rig of any suitable construction, not shown.
The elongated guiding frame 10 forms a U-shaped hollow member which may be strengthened by a number of transverse inner ribs 13. Adjacent the four corners of the frame It) there are bolted to the frame in opposed spaced apart relation inwardly protruding guides 14, for example formed by pieces of angle irons. To one end of the inner bottom portion of the frame 10 there is connected a bracket 15 provided with a transverse pivot 16 to which a double acting, preferably hydraulic power cylin- 3,247,9l3 Patented Apr. 26, 1966 der 17 is pivotally connected. The opposite end of the power cylinder 17 carries a pivot 18 which is pivotally connected to a bracket 19 carried by the bottom portion of an elongated feed bar or support 26 carried by the guides 14 of the frame 10 for slidable reciprocating movement with respect to said frame 10.
The elongated support 20 consists of a channel bar 21, FIGS. 2 and 4, the flanges of which are formed integral with bars 22 extending the length of the channel bar 21. In the bars 22 there are formed a number of threaded holes 23 which cooperate with bolts 24 for connecting the guiding means of the feed bar 20 to the bars 22. The guiding means consists of elongated flat steel strips 25 which are kept at a suitable distance from each other by a bar 26 interposed therebetween. The steel strips 25 and the bars 26 are provided with aligned holes for the passage of the bolts 24 and are firmly connected to the bars 22 by the bolts 24. The strips 25 and the bar 26 therebetween form an inner guideway 27 and an outer guideway 28 extending parallel and in opposed relation the length of the feed bar 20. The outer guideways 28 are intended for cooperation with the guides 14 of the guiding frame It) and are held slidably between and on the opposed guides 14. By extending or contracting the power cylinder 17, the feed bar may be displaced longitudinally of itself in either direction along the guideways 28 and on the guides 14 of the guiding frame 10.
Slidably carried by the opposed inner guideways 27 on guides 40 for movement in the longitudinal direction of the feed bar 20 is a slide 29 to which a rock drill 39 is connected as by bolts 31. Any conventional means may be provided for feeding the slide 29 together with the rock drill 30 alongv the feed bar 24 For example as illustrated in the figures a feed screw 32 may be provided to cooperate with a feed nut 33 on the slide 29 and the feed screw 32 may be driven by a suitable feed motor 34 connected to the rear end of the feed bar 2%.
On the forward end of the feed bar there may be provided a forwardly protruding bar 35 carrying a spur 36 and a preferably power operated drill steel guide 37 of any suitable construction. The drill steel 38 extends through the drill steel guide 37 as illustrated.
The pressure fluid for operation of the power jack 17, the motor 34, the drill steel guide 37, and the drill 30 is supplied from suitable sources not illustrated and the various hoses for conveying pressure fluid have been omitted for the sake of clarity and since the provision of such hoses is obvious to those skilled in the art.
In operation, the guiding frame 10 is positioned by means of the carrying member 12 of the drill rig with the drill axis pointing in the drilling direction. By manipulating the power cylinder 17 the operator moves the feed bar 20 longitudinally of guiding frame 10 on the guiding means 14 and 28 until the spur 36 firmly contacts the rock face to be drilled. Thereupon the operator commences operation of the rock drill 30 and the. feed motor 34, which by means of the screw 32 serves to feed the slide 29 together with the 'drill 30 forwardly on the guiding means 27 and 40.
By providing the guideways 27, 28 in common planes at opposite sides of a central longitudinal plane through the feed bar 20, lateral forces acting on the rock drill 30 will have a very short moment arm with respect to the guideways whereby a considerable reduction of stresses acting on the feed bar 20 and the guiding frame is gained. By simple removal of the bolts 24 the steel strips may be easily replaced when worn.
The embodiment of the invention above described and illustrated in the drawing should only be considered as an example and the invention may be modified in several different ways within the scope of the following claims.
What We claim is:
1. A feed bar arrangement for rock drills comprising a rock drill, an elongated support having a first pair of opposed parallel guiding means extending longitudinally thereof with one of said pair on each side of said support, said rock drill being carried for slidable guided movement in said first guiding means, means for moving said rock drill longitudinally of said support along said first guiding means, drill rig means for carrying said support, a second pair of opposed parallel guiding means extending longitudinally of said support with one of said pair on each side of said support and disposed adjacent to but opposed to one of said first pair of guiding means, said support being carried by said drill rig means for slidable guided movement on said second guiding means, means for moving said support longitudinally of said drill rig means along said second guiding means, and said adjacent ones of said opposed pairs of said first and second guiding means being disposed in planes common to each other.
2. A feed bar arrangement for rock drills comprising a rock drill, an elongated support having a first pair of opposed parallel guiding means extending longitudinally thereof with one of said pair on each side of said support, said rock drill being carried for slidable guided movement on said first guiding means, means for moving said rock drill longitudinally of said support along said first guiding means, drill rig means for carrying said support, a second pair of opposed parallel guiding means extending longitudinally of said support with one of said pair on each of said support and disposed adjacent but opposed to the one of said first pair of guiding means, said support being carried by said drill rig means for slidable guided movement on said second guiding means, means for moving said support longitudinally of said drill rig means along said second guiding means, and said first and second guiding means being formed by opposed portions of common guide elements removably secured to said support at opposite sides thereof.
3. A feed bar arrangement for rock drills comprising a rock drill, an elongated support having a first pair of opposed parallel guideways extending longitudinally thereof with one of said pair on each side of said support, opposed first guides on each side of said rock drill for sliding cooperating movement in said first guideways, means for moving said rock drill with said first guides longitudinally of said support along said first guideways, drill rig means for carrying said support, opposed second guides on each side of said drill rig means, a second pair of opposed parallel guideways extending longitudinally of said support with one of said pairs on each side of said support and disposed adjacent but opposed to the one of said first pair of guideways for cooperating with said second guides, said support being carried by said second guides of said drill rig means for slidable guided movement in said second guideways, means for moving said support longitudinally of said drill rig means along said second guideways, and said adjacent ones of said opposed pairs of said first and second guideways being disposed in planes common to each other.
4. A feed bar arrangement for rock drills comprising a rock drill, an elongated support having a first pair of opposed parallel guideways extending longitudinally thereof with one of said pair disposed on each side of said support, opposed first guides on each side of said rock drill for cooperating slidable movements in said first guideways, means for moving said rock drill with said first guides thereon longitudinally of said support along said first guideways, drill rig means for carrying said support, op-
posed second guides on each side of said drill rig means, a second pair of opposed parallel guideways extending longitudinally of said support with one of each pair on each side thereof and disposed adjacent but opposed to one of said first pair of guideways for cooperating with said second guides, said support being carried by said second guides of said drill rig means for slidable guided movement in saidsecond guideways, means for moving said support with said second guides disposed thereon longitudinally of said drill rig means along said second guideways, and said first and second guideways being formed by opposed edge portions of common steel strips removably secured to said support at opposite sides thereof.
5. In apparatus of the character described for supporting a rock drill and feeding and retracting it toward and away from a rock face to be drilled, the combination which comprises elongated drill rig main support means for supporting and carrying said apparatus, an elongated feed bar carried by said support means and movable longitudinally with respect thereto for carrying said rock drill and feeding movement thereof toward and away from said rock face to be drilled, a first pair of parallel cooperating guideways and guide means engaged therewith on said support means and said feed bar for slidably supporting said feed bar on said support means and disposed longitudinally and at opposite sides of said feed bar and said support means, motor means for moving said feed bar longitudinally with respect to said support means and as supported and guided by said first pair of guideways and guide means, a second pair of parallel cooperating guideways and guide means engaged therewith on said feed bar and said rock drill for slidably supporting said rock drill on said feed bar and disposed longitudinally and at opposite sides of said rock drill and said feed bar, adjacent ones of said first and second pairs of guideways and guide means at each side of said apparatus being disposed in a common plane parallel to the longitudinal axis of said rock drill, and means for moving said rock drill longitudinally with respect tosaid feed bar and as supported and guided by said second pair of guideways and guide means, the distance between said first pair of guideways and guide means on said support means and said feed bar being greater than the distance between said second pair of guideways and guide means on said feed barand said rock drill.
6. Apparatus as recited in claim 5 in which said guideways of both said first and second pairs are disposed on said feed bar.
7. Apparatus as recited in claim 6 in which said guideways on said feed bar are formed as opposed channels between elongated plates removably secured to said feed bar along opposite sides edges thereof for engaging said guide means on both said support means and said rock drill on opposite sides of said opposed channels.
8. Apparatus as recited in claim 7 in which said opposed channels are formed from opposite edge portions of common steel strips removably secured to said feed bar along opposite side edges thereof.
9. Apparatus as recited in claim 5 in which both said pairs of guideways and guide means lie in a common plane parallel to the longitudinal axis of said rock drill.
10. In apparatus of the character described for supporting a rock drill and feeding and retracting it toward and away from a rock face to be drilled, the combination which comprises elongated drill rig support means for supporting and carrying said apparatus, an elongated feed 'bar carried by said support and movable longitudinally with respect thereto for carrying said rock drill and feeding movement thereof toward and away from said rock face to be drilled, a first pair of parallel guideways on said feed bar, a first pair of parallel guide means on said support means engaging said guideways for slidably supporting said feed bar on said support means and disposed longitudinally thereof and at opposite sides of said feed bar and said support means, motor means for moving said feed bar longitudinally with respect to said support means and as supported and guided by said guide- Ways and guide means, a second pair of parallel guide- Ways on said feed bar and opposed to said first pair, a second pair of guide means on said rock drill engaging said second pair of guideways for slidably supporting said rock drill on said feed bar and disposed longitudinal 1y thereof and at opposite sides of said rock drill and said support means, and means for moving said rock drill longitudinally With respect to said feed bar and as supported and guided by said second pair of guideways and guide means, both said pairs of guideways being formed as opposed channels by common elements removably secured to said feed bar along opposite side edges thereof.
