-My invention relates to feeding mechanisms, and more particularly to feeding mechanisms'for fluid pressure rock drllls of the drifter type.
Anobject of'myinvention is'to provide an improved feeding mechanismJ-A further object of my invention is to provide' an improved feeding mechanism of a. type adapted for use with fiuid pressure rock 'drills of the J drifter type whereby a large feeding capacity is obtained while retaining acompact, light construction. Other objects andadvantages of my invent-ionwill hereinafter more fully appear.
In' the accompanying drawings. I'have shown for purposes; of illustration one form I which my invention may ass'ume in practice. In these drawings,-c I ig. 1 is a side elevationy partially in central longitudinal section, of'a drifter type drill incorporating my improved feed mechanism.
Fig; Qis a transverse sectionjtaken on line a e of Fig. 1. r
a In this illustrative form of my invention I have shown the same used in connection with a drilling motor 1,' herein of the valveless percussive type; comprisinga cylln'der 2- having a piston'*(not shown) reciprocable therein in a wellknown manner, adaptedto p'ercussively actuate a drill steel 3suitably carried in the front end of the drilling motor under the control of a throttle valve mechanism 3.
The cylinder 2 is herein providediwith gib s.
means (not shown) in the cradle member 7,
and having a longitudinally disposed bore 16 formed therein. Arranged in a boss 17 formed integral with the intermediate cradle member 7 is a stationary feed nut 18'which cooperates with a rotatable feed screw 19 1923; 1 Serial s. mass.
in supports. Q0 suitably: secured,
Fherein: by boltconnectionsQl, to the shell 11.
AlsoJou-rnaled in the left hand. support 20 is a rod'22 slidably mounted within the bore 16 in'the feed screw 15 but rotatable therewith ibysmeansiof keyways 23 cut along its length cooperating with keys 24 'fixedwithin the -feed=screw. Itigidly secured t0 a gear 27,
herein by a bolt connection25,lis ahandle 26..
.Looselymounted. on the shaft 22is the gear 2:? which meshes with a gear 28 loosely journaled. onanextension 29 of the feed screw 19.1 lhe-gearQT is adaptedto be connected to the rod22'bymeansiof. a suitable clutch. 30,
herein a :dental clutch,.while the gear-28..is
connected tothe feedscrew 19 by means of a similar clutch 31. r j w The mode of operation of'my-inventionis as follows The trunnion 12 is suitably clamped to-a tripod or column (not shown) with the drill steel Bladjacent the working face, 'Fluid pressure is then admitted to the drillinotor 1 through; the Q throttle 'valve mechanism :3, from any suitable source of supply, and thesteel 3'is percussively actuated; The operator then throws in the clutch I31 andby rotating thehandle. 26=the drill motorand' thexintermedi'a-te cradle mounting are fedsimultaneously forward, When the screw 'I9reaches itsnlimit of feeding capacity; the clutch 31 is tllI'OWfi'OlltxELIld' the clutch 30 is thrown in; andby again rotating the handle 26 the= drilling motor 1: is ffed'outwardly r'elative to thecradle member 7 and the shell-11 1;. :W'hen it is desired to return ,the drill, both of the clutches 30 and 31 .are
thrown in, :collapsing the drill" at a higher speed. It isclearly evident from the fore- 7 '-going description that the cradle and drill 'may be-fed simultaneously or independently relativeito the, shell" 11 and that a" feed ofv large-capacity is] obtained in' a" "mechanism J substantiallyno- I longer than the drilling .motor itself;
:While I havein this applicationsp ecifi'calmay; assumein practice, it will be understood may modified and embodied inivario'u's that this form.of;+the same;isshown for-pur- V poses" of illustratiom'and that the invention a c ly describedaione 'form which my invention 7 i y en other forms without departing from. its
spirit or the scope of the appended claims.
'What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a rock drill, a drilling tool, a cradle therefor havingguideways along: which a said tool isfslidable, a guideshell for 9- porting said tool and cradle and having guidevv ays along which said cradlels s11 "able, means to feed said drillingitool relative to said cradle, and means to feed said cradle relative to said shell, said feeding means being simultaneously operable'to cf-' feet feed of the drilling'toolrelativeto said shell during drilling and including .a commen-operating element mounted onzsaid shell to effect simultaneous feed OfTSllLlGIfldle. relative to said shell and said tool relativetosa-id'cradle, said operating element remaining, as regards bodily movement, stationar with saidsllell during feeding of said .cra 'le.
