BOX FOR PHONOGRAPHS Filed April l5, 1964 United States Patent O 3,245,574 BOX FOR PHONOGRAPHS Heinrich Zimmermann, St. Georgen, Biack Forest, and
Richard Schwer, Homberg, Schwarzwaldbahn, Germany, assignors to Gebruder Steidinger, St. Georgen, Black Forest, Germany, a corporation of Germany Filed Apr. 13, 1964, Ser. No. 359,255 Claims priority, application Germany, Juiy 20, 1963, St 20,887 1 Claim. (Cl. 220-30) The present invention relates to a ibox for a portable phonograph having a removable cover.
It is known to design a portable phonograph with a removable cover. The cover is connected with the box by means of a setting hinge. This hinge is designed such, that its both parts can be separated, as soon as the cover is opened .for a predetermined length. Aside from the fact, that the handling of such :hinge provides often difliculties to the layman, the removal of the cover cannot be performed in 'a narrow limited space, as this is often the case during standing in a niche or a shelf or of a cabinet.
It is also known to equip a frame for a portable phonograph with a removable cap. Upon putting into operation `the portable phonograph, the cap is removed and put aside and under circumstances mounted again during the reproduction. By this arrangement, the drawback, which is inherent in the known portable phonographs, is avoided. If the portable phonograph is, however, operated not in a niche, the cover must be likewise removed for the purpose of its operation and put aside, in spite of the fact that in this case a mere pulling up of the cover would be more suitable.
It is, therefore, one object of the present invention to provide a box for a portable phonograph, wherein the drawbacks of the known structures are avoided.
It is another object of the present invention to provide a box for a portable phonograph, wherein me-ans are provided for handling the cover such, that one manual step is required only for moving upwardly the cover, as well as for the' removal of the cover equipped for a putting up and for standing in such upright position.
With these and other objects in view, which will become apparent in the following detailed description, the present invention will be clearly understood in connection with the laccompanying drawing, lin whi-ch:
FIGURE 1 is a cross-section through the front wall and the rear wall of a box for a portable phonograph; and
FIGURE 2 is a front perspective view of the box with its cover in a slightly lifted position.
Referring now to the drawing, the box for the portable phonograph comprises a rear wall 1, a front wall 1 :and a bottom portion 2 of the box, which has an intermediate bottom 3. The rear wall 1 has a recess 4 .and the intermediate bottom -3 is equipped with another recess 4 continuing from the recess 4 of the rear wall 1.
The rear wall 1 defines jointly with the intermediate bottom 3 the total recess, which is under-cut looking in vertical direction at the faces 5 and 6. A cover 8 is disposed on top of the box and is capable of performing a vertical lifting movement, as well as -a tilting movement. 'Ilhe rear Wall 7 of the cover 8 is vertically extended downwardly and projects with its end portion 11 into the recess, so that the cover 8 is removable in vertical direction. If the cover 8 is lifted at its front side 9, the rear wall 7 of the cover 8 turns about the rear edge 10 of the 3,245,574 Patented Apr. 12, 1966 "ice recess 4 until it engages the face 6 to assume the position of the cover 8 shown in dotted lines in FIG. l of the drawing. The rear edge 10 is defined by the crossing of a vertical face 10 with an inclined face 102 of the recess 4 of the rear wall 1, extending in rearward and upward direction. The center of gravity of the cover 8 is arranged such, that upon tilting the cover 8 upwardly the center of gravity moves past the rear edge 10 operating las the pivoting axis for the cover 8, so that the latter remains standing by itself in its opened position, in spite of the fact that it did not open for an angle of or more. While we have disclosed one embodiment of the present invention, it is to be understood that this embodiment is given by example only and not in a limiting sense, the scope of the present invention being deter-mined by the objects and the claim.
We claim: A Ibox for a phonograph, comprising a rear wall, a front wall spaced apart from said rear wall, a-bottom portion disposed between said rear wall and said front wall, an intermediate bottom between said rear wall and said front wall, a cover removably mounted on said rear wall and said front wall, respectively, said cover hav-ing a top portion and a rear portion extending perpendicu'larly and downwardly from said top portion, said rear portion having an inner face and an outer face disposed parallel to -said inner face, said rear wall of said box having a first recess receiving said rear portion of said cover, said first recess being dcined by a rst downwardly in clined bottom face continuing into Ia vertically downwardly directed abutment face, the crossing line of said two faces defining the pivoting axis for lifting )and lowering, respectively, said cover, said intermediate bottom having a second recess continuing from said first recess, `said second recess being dened by a second upwardly inclined top face disposed opposite and parallel to said irst upwardly inclined top face and continuing at its upper end upwardly into a second vertically and upwardly directed abutment face and said upwardly inclined top face further continuing downwardly into a curved bottom face and extending into said iirst recess to terminate at said rst vertically and rupwardly directed abutment face, said rear portion of said cover .is of a thickness substantially identical with the distance between said inclined faces and between said vertical faces of said recesses, said outer face of said rear .portion of said cover abutting said first vertically and downwardly directed abutment face in the closing position of said cover and said inner face of said rear portion of said cover engaging said second upwardly inclined top face of said second recess, in the open position, so that said cover is shiftable from its closing position .to its open position by a tilting and non-sliding movement, and the gravity center of said cover being disposed 4in the open position of the latter in a vertical plane positioned rearwardly from said pivoting axis for said cover, in order to retain said cover in its open position, upon tilting said cover from its closing position .for an .angle less than 90 Iinto its open position.
