(Cl. 3128) ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A phonograph box having a rear wall, a front wall, a bottom portion therebetween and an intermediate bottom between the rear wall and the front wall. A cover is removably mounted on the rear wall and the front wall, respectively, and has a top portion and a rear portion extending substantially perpendicularly and downwardly from the top portion, the rear portion having a rearwardly extending projection which is adapted to be movably inserted into specially formed recesses in the rear wall and the intermediate bottom for moving the cover from a secure locking position to an open position.

The present invention relates to a box for record players or phonographs having a removable cover.

In U .8. Patent No. 324,574, a box for a phonograph is disclosed which comprises a rear wall, a front wall spaced apart from the rear wall, a bottom portion disposed between the rear wall and the front wall, an intermediate bottom between the rear wall and the front wall, a cover removably mounted on the rear wall and the front wall, respectively, the cover having a top portion and a rear portion extending perpendicularly and downwardly from the top portion, the rear portion having an inner face and an outer face disposed parallel to the inner face, while the rear wall of the box has a first recess receiving the rear portion of the cover. This first recess is defined by a first downwardly inclined bottom face continuing into a vertically downwardly directed abutment face, the crossing line of the two faces defining the pivoting axis for lifting and loading, respectively, the cover. The intermediate portion has a second recess continuing from the first recess. The second recess is defined by a second upwardly inclined top face disposed opposite and parallel to the first upwardly inclined top face and continues at its upper end upwardly into a second vertically and upwardly directed abutment face, and the upwardly inclined top face further continues downwardly into a curved bottom face and extends into the first recess to terminate at the first vertically and upwardly directed abutment face. The rear portion of the cover is of a thickness substantially identical with the distance between the inclined faces and between the vertical faces of the recesses. The outer face of the rear portion of the cover abuts the first vertically and downwardly directed abutment face in the closing position of the cover and the inner face of the rear portion of the cover engages the second upwardly inclined top face of the second recess, in the open position, so that the cover is shifted from its closing position to its open position by a tilting and non-sliding movement, and the gravity center of the cover is disposed in the open position of the latter in a vertical plane position rearwardly from the pivoting axis for the cover, in order to retain the cover in its open position upon tilting the cover from its closing position for an angle of 90 degrees into its open position.

Boxes or record players with a box-like housing are United States Patent "ice frequently equipped with a gripping member and are used often as a valise.

In boxes for phonographs it is required in view of the transportation thereof, that the connecting members between the cover and the box provide a rigid connection in their closed position for the cover in all directions. This applies particularly for the connecting members on the tipping edge of the cover concerning a vertical lifting of the cover, if the latter is closed. So called releasable hinges are known for this purpose, which are assembled in open position and which interlock during the closing movement of the cover, such that a vertical lifting of the cover is no more possible once it is closed.

In connection with boxes for phonographs, it is very much desirable to retain the cover, in addition to its complete removal, also in opened position. For this purpose it is conventional to provide cover supports, bands, or other suitable means. The latter have the advantage that they can be applied often practically without any particular effort and also do not interfere otherwise with the service of the device. While its application is possible without any difiiculty with normal hinges, yet, this is not possible with the conventional pin hinges and first of all not in connection with such hinges, which make possible a completely immersible structure.

It has been proposed before to provide a structure of the previously mentioned box for phonographs, in which in addition to a completely immersible pin hinge also an abutment for the opening angle of the cover is provided, however, an anchoring against a vertical cover removal in case of the cover being in a closed position is lacking.

It is, therefore, One object of the present invention to provide a box for record players in which the drawbacks of the known structures are removed.

Accordingly, the present invention provides a box for a phonograph comprising a rear wall, a front wall spaced apart from the rear wall, a bottom portion disposed between the rear wall and the front wall, an intermediate bottom between the rear wall and the front wall, a cover removably mounted on the rear wall and the front wall, respectively, which cover has a top portion and a rear portion extending substantially perpendicularly and downwardly from the top portion. The rear portion includes an inner face and an outer face disposed parallel to the inner face and a projection extending rearwardly from the outer face. The rear wall of the box has a first recess which receives the rear portion of the cover and a second recess which continues from the first recess and receives the rearward projection of the rear portion. The first recess is defined by a first upwardly inclined top face continuing into a second vertically downwardly directed abutment face, the crossing line of the two faces defining the pivoting axis for liftingand lowering, respectively, the cover. The second recess continues from the first recess and is defined by a third substantially horizontal face, a fourth substantially vertical face, and a fifth curved face complementary to the outer face of the projection of the rear portion.

The intermediate bottom includes a third recess continuing from the first and second recesses. The third recess is defined by a sixth upwardly inclined top face disposed opposite and parallel to the first upwardly inclined top face and continues at its upper end upwardly into a seventh vertically and upwardly directed abutment face and the upwardly inclined top face further continues downwardly into a curved bottom face and extends into the first recess to continue into the fifth curved face. The rear portion of the cover is of a thickness substantially identical with the distance between the inclined faces and between the vertical faces of the recesses. The outer face of the rear portion of the cover abutting the first vertically and downwardly directed abutment face in the closing position of the cover and the inner face of the rear portion of the cover engages the seventh upwardly inclined top face of the second recess, in the open position, so that the cover is shiftable from its closing position to its open position by a tilting and non-sliding movement.

The gravity center of the cover is disposed in the open position of the latter in a vertical plane positioned rearwardly from the pivoting axis for the cover, in order to retain the cover in its open position, upon tilting the cover from its closing position for an angle less than 90 due to its open position.

It is another object of the present invention, to provide a box for record players, wherein the part to be inserted contains a projection at its free end on the side pointing to the rear wall of the box, which projection enters in a correspondingly formed out in the recess during the closing of the cover.

With these and other objects in view which will become apparent in the following detailed description, the present invention will be clearly understood in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which the only figure is a cross-section of the box for a portable phonograph.

Referring now to the drawing, the box for the portable phonograph comprises a rear wall 1, a front wall 1' and a bottom portion 2 of the box which has an intermediate bottom 3. The rear wall 1 has a recess 4' and the intermediate bottom 3 is equipped with another recess 4 continuing from the recess 4' of the rear wall 1.

The rear wall 1 defines jointly with the intermediate bottom 3 the total recess which is undercut looking in vertical direction at the

5 and 6. A cover 8 is disposed on top of the box which carries a downwardly directed extension 7 to form the rear wall 7 of the cover 3 and carries at'its end 11 a projection 12 on its side pointing to the rear wall 1 of the box, which projection 12 penetrates into a complementary designed cut 13 of the recess 4'. In its closed position the cover 8 is thus secured against movements in any direction. If the cover is lifted at its forward edge 9, the rear wall 7 turns about .the rear edge of the recess 4' until it engages with the lower end 11 of the rear wall 7 of the cover 8 the face 6 of the recess 4, as indicated in dotted lines in the drawing.

The center of gravity of the cover 8 is disposed in this position, seen in vertical direction, behind the recess 4', so that the cover 8 remains in its open position. On the other hand, the cover 8 can be removed from the box without difiiculty in the direction of the normal position of the rear wall 7.

While I have disclosed one embodiment of the present invention, it is to be understood that this embodiment is given by example only and not in a limiting sense, the scope of the present invention being determined by the objects and the claim.

I claim:

A box for a phonograph, comprising a rear wall,

a front wall spaced apart from said rear wall,

a bottom portion disposed between said rear wall and said front wall,

an intermediate bottom between said rear wall and said front wall,

a cover removably mounted on said rear wall and said front wall, respectively,

said cover having a top portion and a rear portion extending substantially perpendicularly and downwardly from said top portion,

said rear portion having inner face and an outer face disposed parallel to said inner face, as well as a projection extending rearwardly from said outer face,

said rear wall of said box having a first recess receiving said rear portion of said cover and a second recess continuing from said first recess and receiving said rearward projection of said rear portion,

said first recess being defined by a first upwardly inclined top face continuing into .a second vertically downwardly directed abutment face,

the crossing line of said two faces defining the pivoting axis for lifting and lowering, respectively said cover,

said second recess continuing from said first recess being defined by a third substantially horizontal face, a fourth substantially vertical face and a fifth curved face complementary to the outer face of said projection of said rear portion,

said intermediate bottom having a third recess continuing from said first and second recesses,

said third recess being defined by a sixth upwardly inclined top face disposed opposite and parallel to said first upwardly inclined top face and continuing at its upper end upwardly into a seventh vertically and upwardly directed abutment face and said upwardly inclined top face further continuing downwardly into a curved bottom face and extending into said first recess to continue into said fifth curved face,

said rear portion of said cover being of a thickness substantially identical with the distance between said inclined faces and between said vertical faces of said recesses,

said outer face of said rear portion of said cover abutting said first vertically and downwardly directed abutment face in the closing position of said cover and said inner face of said rear portion of said cover engaging said seventh upwardly inclined top face of said second recess, in the open position, so that said cover is shiftable from its closing position to its open position by a tilting and non-sliding movement, and

the gravity center of said cover being disposed in the open position of the latter in a vertical plane positioned rearwardly from said pivoting axis for said cover, in order to retain said cover in its open position, upon tilting said cover from its closing position for an angle less than into its open position.
