Description

(ModeL) W. L. BLISS & G. F. KOPP.
BARN DOOR FASTENING.
No. 324,528. 8 PatentedAug. 18, 1885.
WITNESSES: INVENTOR: N
ATTORNEYS" IUNITED STATES WILLIAM L. BLISS AND GEORGE F. KOPP, OF SOUTH EGREMONI, MASS.
BARN-DOOR Application filed May 13, 1885. (ModeL) FASTENING.
Patent No. 324,525, dated August 18, 1885.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, WILLIAM L. BLIss and GEORGE F. Kore, of South Egremont, Berkshire county, Massachusetts, have invented a new and Improved Barn-Door Fastening, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of our invention is to provide a new and improved fastening for the door of a barn or similar building, which fastening is so constructed as to automatically lock the door at the top and the bottom when closing the door.
The invention consists of a vertical shaft placed in suitable hearings on the barn-door, of latches attached to the said shaft, of a spring-lever having an extension, and of triangular latch-plates secured to the barn.
The invention also consists of various parts and details hereinafter more fully set forth and described.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a front elevation of the inside of part of a barn and the doors to which our improved fastening is attached. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same on the lines as w of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a horizontal cross-section on the lines 1 y, Fig. l; and Fig. 4 is a horizontal cross-section on the line a z of Fig. 1.
The barn-doors A and A are hinged to the barn B in the usual manner.
To the inside of the barn-door A are secured the bearings D, in which is placed the vertical shaft 0, extending from the top to the bottom of the door A. To each end of the shaft 0 is fastened, by means of set screws or other suitable devices, a hookcatch, E, provided on its outer end with the curved head E, having a shoulder, E".
To the shaft 0 is fastened in any desired manner the lever F, having an extension or foot-piece, F, which rests against the face of the barndoor A when the same is open. ()n pins F and F", secured to the lever F and the barndoor A, respectively, is placed the spring G.
To the door-sill B is attached the triangular -shaped latch -plate H, and a similar one, H, is secured to thetop crossbeam, B of the barn-door casing.
The barn-door A is provided on its outside face with a pivoted latch, K, shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, which can engage a notched plate, L. secured to the door A, when it is desired to lock the door A to the door A.
The operation is as follows: The latch-plates H and H are placed in such relative position to the catches E E that when the door A is closed the curved heads E strike against the inclined edges of the latch plates H and H, and pass up on the same until the shoulders E of the heads E of the latches E engage the pointed corners of the latch-plates H and H, as shown in Fig. 3, and are held in this position by the action of the spring G on the lever F, secured to the shaft 0, and thereby securely locking the barn'door A at the top and the bottom.
The door A can be unlocked by exerting a pressure on the lever F in the direction of the arrow at in Fig. 4, thereby disengaging the catches E from the latch-plates H and H, and the door can then be swung open.
The door A is locked to the door A when the latter is closed by the pivoted latch K engaging the notched plate L.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- 1. In a barndoor fastening, the vertical shaft 0, the hook-catches E E, and the spring lever F, in combination with the latch-plates H and H, substantially as shown and described.
2. In a barn-door fastening, the vertical shaft 0, the hook-catches E E, provided with heads E E, having shoulders E the lover F, the extension F, and the spring G, in combination with the latchplates H and H, substantially as shown and described.
WILLIAM L. BLISS. GEORGE F. KOPP.
