UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DoNALD o. MODIARMID AND CARRIE J. MODIARMID, OF SOUTH BEND,
, INDIANA.
HEAD- SPECIFICATION forming-part of Letters Patent No. 324,398, dated August 18, 1885.
Application filed February 25, 1884. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, DONALD G. MODIAR- MID and CARRIE J. MODIARMID, citizens of the United States, residing at South Bend, in the county of St. Joseph and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Head-Rests, of which the following is a specification, to wit.
This invention relates to an improvement in head-rests for railroad and otherseats; and it consists in the peculiar construction and arrangement of the same, whereby its adjustment and ease of folding is facilitated, substantially as will be hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which our invention ap pertains to make and use the same, we will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a rear elevation; Fig. 2, a side View; Fig. 3, 'a detail view of the looking-cam, and Fig. 4 is a cross-section of the rest.
A represents the side supports of the rest, which are formed with a curved extension, A, for clasping the back of the seat, and also with aswiveled extension or arm, A, supported in a lug, a, cast on the back of the support, and passing through a slot, at, in a similar lug below the first. The back of the seat is clasped between the extensions A A, and the latter, being swiveled, may be turned freely around to accommodate a seat of greater thickness, and is locked in either position by an eccentric lever, c upon the slotted lug, as in Fig. 3.
Upon the standards A A are placed the end pieces, B B, of the head-rest, arranged to slide vertically upon said standards and be held at any point by a fiat spring, b, placed between the parts B and A, as seen in Fig. 1. To one of the castings B is hinged a connecting-brace, O,'which extends across the device and has its opposite end restingin a socket, b',.in the opposite casting, as in Fig. 4.. The two parts B B are preferably formed with grooved outer I sides, and in these grooves are secured the endsof the rest D, of carpet, canvas, or other suitable flexible material.
In operation the standards A A are secured to the back of a chair or other seat and connected by the brace O, and is then ready for use, being shoved up or down to suit the person using it. When not. wanted, the standards are detached, the brace O lifted from its socket at one end and swung down alongside of the casting to whichit is hinged, and the whole rolled up in the flexible rest D, and being light and small, may be stowed away In valise or shawl-strap till again wanted.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a head-rest, the combination, with the two main supports provided with clamps for engaging the seat-back, of two castings sliding upon said standards and connected by a flexible fabric, springs upon said castings bearing against the standards to retain the rest In position, and a brace hinged to one of these castings and having its end detachably secured to the other, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The standards A,having curved extension A and lugs a a, one of which is provided with a slot, in combination with the auxiliary foot A sjviveled in one lug and passing through the slot in the other, and the eccentric a, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. In a head-rest, the standards A, swiveled portion A, and eccentric a in combination with the sliding frames B B,having the springs b, the hinged brace O, and the flexible fabric D, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof we alfix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
DONALD G. MODIABMID. CARRIE J. MODIARMID.
