Filed Apr. 23, 1964, Ser. No. 362,143 3 Claims. (Cl. 15-578) This invention relates to a texture applying device and more particularly to a device for the application of small quantities of a material such as plaster or the like to a wall or ceiling to provide a textured surface to the same.
A primary object of this invent-ion is the provision of a texture applying device which is sturdy and durable in construction, reliable and eflicient in operation, and relatively simple and inexpensive to manufacture, utilize, and maintain.
Another object of this invention is the provision of a texture applying device which may be hand operated for feeding desired quantities of a texturing material onto a surface, a troweling means being useful therewith for varying the texture applied.
A further object of the instant invention is the provision of a texture applying device having a compressible container means which may be squeezed by the user to force quantities of the texturing material through openings in an applicator plate onto the surface to be textured.
A still further object of this invention is the provision of a sealing means Within the device for normally closing openings in the applicator plate whereby the texturing material will be maintained in a moist, usable condition.
Yet another object of this invention is the provision of spacing and roughening means on the applicator plate of the texture applying device of the instant invention whereby the surface of the applicator plate may be maintained a predetermined distance from the surface to be textured and whereby the surface may be roughened to increase adherence of the texturing material prior to the application of the same.
Other and further objects reside in the combination of elements, arrangement of parts, and features of construction.
Still other objects will in part be obvious and in part be pointed out as the description of the invention proceeds and as shown in the accompanying drawing wherein:
FIGURE 1 is a side elevational view of a texture applying device in accordance with the instant inventive concept, a surface to be textured being shovm in dashed lines;
FIGURE 2 is an end elevational view of the same;
FIGURE 3 is an enlarged view of the end shown in FIGURE 2;
FIGURE 4 is a fragmentary longitudinal cross-sectional view through the applicator end of the device of the instant invention; and
FIGURE 5 is a transverse cross-sectional view taken substantially on line 55 of FIGURE 4.
Similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views of the drawing.
Referring now to the drawing in general, a texture applying device in accordance with the instant inventive concept is designated generally by the reference numeral and comprises basically a compressible container means 12, an applicator plate 14 secured to the container means 12, and a sealing element 16 juxtaposed to the inner surface of the applicator plate 14.
The container means 12 may be formed of any desirable material such as a relatively non-porous cloth, plastic, rubber or the like. The container means 12 may be of any desired shape, but is preferably substantially cylindrical as shown in FIGURE 1 having two open ends, one of which is closed by the applicator plate 14 and the other "ice of which is selectively closed by a rubber band, string or the like 18, a quantity of texturing material (not shown) being receivable internally of the container means 12 when the closing means 18 is removed therefrom.
The applicator plate 14 is preferably formed of metal, plastic, or the like and has a peripheral flange 20 carrying a plurality of spaced tab members 22 which are bendable over a split retained ring 24, the retaining ring 24 securing the sealing element 16 in place. The peripheral flange 20 is received within the end of the container means 12 and is maintained in position by an outer retaining ring 26 which may be formed of metal, plastic, rubber, or the like. A plurality of openings 28 are defined in the applicator plate 16 by pressed out portions 30 which extend from the outer surface of the applicator plate 16 to form spacer means for maintaining the applicator plate 16 a predetermined distance from a surface 32 to be textured.
The sealing element 16 is formed of a resilient material such as rubber or the like, and defines a plurality of valve means in the form of slits 34 which are aligned with the openings 28 in the applicator plate 16 and which are normally closed to seal the device 10. Compression of the container means 12 opens the slits 34 by providing pressure from the texturing material to force a quantity of the same through each of the openings 28.
The use and operation of the device of the instant invention will now be apparent. With the closing means 18 removed from the container means 12 a quantity of texturing material of any desired composition is inserted through the open end. The texturing material is preferably of a consistency that it may be readily extruded through the openings 28 in the applicator plate 14 without being so moist as to slide from the surface 32 to be textured. The surface 32 may be roughened, if desired, by scraping the pressed out portions 30 of the applicator plate 14 thereover. The container means 12 is then compressed by squeezing the same to force a quantity of the texturing material through the slits 34 and the openings 28 onto the sunface 32, the pressed out portions 30 spacing the applicator plate 14 a predetermined distance therefrom. On relief of the pressure from the texturing material the slits 34 will close due to the resilience of the sealing element or liner 16. The device 10 may be moved over the surface 32 in any manner to texture the same by applying small quantities of the material thereon. If desired, any conventional troweling means may be used to flatten or rearrange the texturing material after it has been applied.
It will now be seen that there is herein provided an improved texture applying device which satisfies all of the objectives of the instant invention, and others, including many advantages of great practical utility and commercial importance.
Since many embodiments may be made of the instant inventive concept, and since many modifications may be made of the embodiments hereinbefore shown and described, it is to be understood that all matter herein is to be interpreted merely as illustrative, and not in a limiting sense.
We claim:

2. The structure of claim 1 wherein said sealing memher is a resilient liner, said valve means being slits aligned with said openings in said applicator plate, said slits opening under the pressure from the texturing material upon compressing said container means, and said slits closing due to the resilience of said liner on relief of the pressure from the texturing material.
3.
