7 Claims.
The invention aims to provide a new and improved article in which a tube iseemployed to contain a paste or liquid and to extrude same as required to an applicator carried by said tube, the tube acting as a handle for operating the applicator and enabling efiective use thereof to apply the extruded paste or liquid to any desired surface.
In carrying out the above end, a further object is to provide the device with two applicator surfaces which converge outwardly from one end of the tube and join each other along a ridge line, giving greater applicator area, enabling more convenient use of the device, and providing a rather sharp corner or ridge which may be used to apply the extruded paste or liquid in angular places, for example, those existingbetween the welts and uppers of shoes.
A still further object is to provide a device'of the class described which is normally sealed in a novel way yet will permit extrusion simply by pressing inwardly upon the Walls of the tube.
With the foregoing and minor objects in view, the invention reside in the novel subject matter hereinafter described and claimed, description being accomplished by reference to the accompanying drawings.

In Figs, 1 to 4, I0 denotes a tube of such nature that opposite sides thereof may be readily pressed toward each other to extrude the tube contents l I. This tube is provided with an end wall consisting of two halves l2 and 12 which converge outwardly and join each other along a ridge line l3, each half being formed with an opening l4 spaced from said ridge line. An applicator pad is cemented or otherwise suitablysecured against the outer side of the end wall l2, l2, said ap-, plicator pad being preferably formed from sponge rubber and consisting of two outwardly converging halves l5 and I5 joined along a ridge line l6 which rests on the ridge line ,[3 of the tube end wall. This ridge portion of the applicator is formed with a small opening ll. ,The restricted portion of the applicator within the dotted line I8 (Fig. 3) is free from connection with the tube end wall, said portion extending over the ridge 13 of said end wall and preferably to the lower edges of the openings I 4. The above mentioned restricted portion of the applicator pad is denoted at l9 audit will be observed that it normally liestig'htly against the end wall I2, 12' of thetube ID to forma seal between the openings !4 and the opening I]. However, when the sides of the tube are pressed inwardly to extrude some of the contents! 1 said contents must outwardly bulge (Fig. 2) the portion IS in order to pas through the opening I4, on to the opening l1, and through the latter. When pressure on the side walls of the tube is discontinued, extrusion stops and when the applicator halves l5 and I5 are used to apply the extruded substance, the pressure necessarily again forces the outwardly bulged applicator portions into tight sealing contact with the tube end wall.
By providing the applicator with two converging halves and a corner or ridge connecting them, the efiective surface of the applicator is increased, the entire device may be held in a more convenient position while using same, and a rather sharp corner is provided to reach into angular places where the extruded substance is to be applied, for example, in the angles between the welts and uppers of shoes.
In Figs. 5 and 6, th tube 10 is provided with an end wall l2 of the same construction as the end. wall above described,,the two halves of said end wall being formed with openings M cOrresponding to the opening 14 while the ridge of said end wall is provided with an opening'20. The applicator pad l5 may be identical with the pad above described, but it is secured throughout its inner area to the end wall ll and is provided with self-closing slits I! in the portions thereof which extend across the openings I l and 20. The device has the same advantages as those above set forth. It will be obvious that the slits Il are normally closed and thus, form seals, yet that when the sides of the tube'are 'mwardly pressed, the tube contents will be extruded through said slits, due to the stretch of the sponge rubber or the like permitting said slits to open somewhat.
In Figs. 7 to 9, the tube M is provided with an end wall l2 shaped as above described, but preferably of considerably less pitch, the ridge of said end wall |2 being formed with a comparatively large opening [4 A disk 2| of rubber or the like is cemented against the lower sides of the converging halves of the end wall [2 and is provided in its ridge-portion with an opening 22 under the opening M A tongue 23 is provided to normally close the opening 22, one end of said tongue being integrally joined to the disk 2| at one end of the opening 22. The tongue 23 extends obliquely through this opening 22 to the exterior of the disk 2|. and has its free end positioned within the opening I4 said free end resting upon the corner 24 between the upper side of the disk 2| and the end wall of the open,- ing 22 subjacent to said free end of said tongue. The opening 22 and tongue 23 may be simultaneously formedby cutting a U-shaped slit in the disk 2| as shown in Fig. 9, the free end of the tongue and the contiguous end of the opening being inclined sothat the'corner 24 will be provided to underlie and contact with said free end of the tongue to normally seal the tube.
When the sides of the tube are pressed toward each other, the tube contents will beextruded, causing the tongue 23 to outwardly yield until the pressure is stopped, whereupon the resiliency of said tongue again closes it. The extruded material may be applied to any desired surface by using either half of the end wall l2 as an applicator.
From the foregoing taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it will be seen that novel and advantageous provision has been made for carrying out the objects of the invention. While preferred details have been disclosed, minor variations may of course be made within the scope of the invention as claimed.
I claim:
1. A combined container and applicator comprising a tube having a substantially rigid onepiece end wall, said end wall consisting of two substantially rigid halves converging outwardly and joined integrally to each other along a ridge, and a resilient one-piece pad having substantially fiat converging halves also joined integrally to each other along a ridge, said pad halves being secured upon one side of said end wallhalves and said ridges being in contact with each other,
and an outlet passage from the interior to the exterior of said tube including an opening through the outermost of said ridges, said pad having an integral yieldable portion which normally obstructs discharge of the tube contents through said passage.
2. A combined container and applicator comprising a tube having a substantially rigid onepiece end wall, said end wall consisting of two substantially rigid halves converging outwardly and joined integrally to each other along a ridge, a resilient one-piece applicator pad having substantially flat converging halves also joined integrally to each other along a ridge, said pad halves being secured upon the outer sides of said end wall halves and the two aforesaid ridges being in contact with each other, and a discharge passage from the interior to the exterior of said tube including. an opening through the ridge of said pad, said pad having an integral yieldable portion which normally obstructs discharge of the tube contents through said passage.
3. A combined container and applicator comprising a tube having a relatively rigid end wall formed with an opening, and a resilient applicator pad secured against the outer side of said end wall and extending over said opening, said pad having an opening ofiset from said opening of said end wall, said pad being free of attachment to said end wall from one of said openings to the other, whereby the tube contents, when being extruded, must outwardly bulge a restricted portion of the pad in passing from the wall opening to the pad opening, said restricted portion of the pad normally constituting a seal between the two openings.
4. A combined container and applicatorcomprising a tube having an end wall, said endwall consisting of two halves converging outwardly and joined to each other, along a ridge line, and a resilient applicator pad having substantially flat converging halves joined to each other and secured upon the outer sides of said converging halves of said end wall, each of said converging halves of said end wall having an opening spaced from said ridge line, said pad having an opening directly over said ridge line, a restricted portion of said pad extending over said ridge line from one of said end wall openings to the other thereof and being free of attachment to said end wall, said pad opening being in said restricted portion, whereby the tube contents, when being extruded, must outwardly bulge said restricted portion of said pad in passing'from the end wall openings to the pad opening, said restricted portion normally constituting a seal between said end wall openings and said pad opening. f
5. A combined container and applicator comprising a tube having an end wall, said end. wall consisting of two halves converging outwardly and joined to each other along a ridge line, and
a resilient applicator pad having substantiallyv flat converging halves joined to each other and halves of said end wall, said end wall having openings in said converging halves thereof and in its ridge, the portions of said pad extending over said openings being formed with self-closing slits, said openings and slits serving as discharge means for the tube contents.
6. A combined container and applicator comprising atube having an end wall formed with an opening, an elastic disk secured against said end wall and having an opening alined with said end wall opening, and a tongue extending obliquely through said disk opening and having one of its ends integrally joined to said disk at one end of said disk opening, the free end of said tongue extending to the exterior of said disk and resting upon the corner at which' the outer side of said disk joins the subja'cent end wall of said disk opening.
7. A structure as specified in claim 6; said end wall having two outwardly converging halves which join each other along a ridge line, said opening of said end wall being in the ridge thereof, said elastic disk being secured against the inner sides of said end wall halves, said free end of said tongue projecting through said end wall opening.
