UNITED STATES PATENT FFICE.
VESPER DOB-NECK, OF INDIANAPOLIS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO V. H. MAHAN, OF PRINGETQN, INDIANA.
VENTILATOR.
SZPECIPICATION forming part of Letters Patent No.323,300, dated July 28, 1885.
Application filed June 6, 1885. (No model.)
To all whmn it may concern.-
Be it known that I, VEsPER DORNECK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Combined Registers and Ventilators, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to a combined register and ventilator, and more particularly to that class used for conveying the heat from a lower to an upper room, the object being to provide a device of this character whereby the draft created by the ascent of the heated air through the register will cause, in addition to ventilating the lower room, the cold air in the upper room to be drawn through or into the register, and mixed with the heated air and passed up into the upper room, thereby quickly and effectively heating said upper room.
A further object of the invention is to provide a register with a rod or shaft extending below the ceiling of the lower room, and adapt- 5 ed to be turned by vkey or other means,whereby the register may be opened or closed from said lower room.
W'ith these ends in. view the invention consists in the improved construction and combination of parts hereinafter full y described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a top plan view of a combined register and ventilator constructed in accordance withmy invention, the 5 front plate or damper being open. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section.
In the accompanying drawings, in which like letters of reference in dicate corresponding parts in all the figures, A represents the ceiling of a room, and B the floor of the upper room adjacent thereto.
0 represents a casing, which is preferably cylindrical inform. The bottom plate or end, 5 C, of this casing 0 extends beyond the sides of the casing, as shown at a, and said extended sides fit against the ceilingof the room and are secured thereto in any suitable manner. The
casing 0 extends through the space between the ceiling and floor of the rooms, and is pro= vided with an end plate, E, which is located slightly below the floor B, said plate being formed with a series of openings, 1).
F represents a top plate or damper, which has a series of openings, 0, corresponding in shape and size to those of the end plate, E. The said top plate or damper, F, rests upon the end plate, E, so that it will be flush with the floor B, and is provided centrally with a rectangular opening, in which is seated the rectangular upper end of a rod or shaft, (Z, the lower end of which is rectangular and extends below the ceiling through an opening in the plate 0, said rod or shaft being adapted to be turned by a key having an opening corresponding to the shape of the lower end of the rod or shaft. It will be seen that by this con struction when it is desired to open or close the register the rod or shaft may be turned to open or closethe damper F from the lower room. The top plate or damper, F, is provided with a recess in its side, which recess, e,
is adapted to receive a pin, f, projecting inwardly from the floor a slight distance below the upper sideof the same. The said recess is of a size sufficient to allow the top plate or damperF to be turned to uncover or close the openings in the plate E; but its movement farther than this will be prevented by the pin f, which will strike either end of the recess 6, according to the direction in which the damper F is turned.

which has communication with the upper room.
by means of the openings in end plate, E, but having no communication with the lower room, the bottom plate, 0, being imperforate between the pipe G and cylindrical casing G. The said pipe G is provided near its lower end with a series of openings, g, by which means communication is established between the upper room through the space It between the pipe G and cylinder 0 and the interior of said pipe G.
H represents a rim or flange, which extends upwardly from the inner side of the bottom plate, 0', and smaller than pipe G, so as to leave a space, i, said rim or flange extending upwardly a slight distance above the openings in pipe G. The bottom plate, 0, is provided with a series of openings, j, by means of which the air passes to the upper room when the damper is open.
The operation of my invention is as follows: The damper being opened, the hot air passes through the openings j up'through the openings in the end plate, E. The draft caused by the passage of the hot air through the register causes the cold air to be exhausted from the space h between the pipe G and the cylindrical casing C, said cold air passing through the openings g, then up through space 2', between the rim or flange and pipe G, where it mingles with the hot air and is carried to the upper room. The cold air in the room then enters the space h and passes through the openings 9 into space The rim or flange H serves to carry the hot air from the room below to a point above the openings This hot air, being lighter, cannot pass back into space 73, but must continue its passage to the room above. Spreading as it rises, it heats the cold air in the upper part of space i,which rises in its turn, and is replaced by cold air from the chamber h. This process,continually repeated, not only heats the cold air, in passing through the register, but creates an outside independent current through the register aside from that of cold air downward and hot air upward.
In some cases it may be found desirable to provide a damper in the lower room to cut off communication through the bottom plate in the register. In this case said damper would have openings to correspond to the the bottom plate and would be arranged in a similar manner to the damper at the upper end of the register.
Having thus described my invention, I claim 1. The combination, with a casing having a top and bottom plate and a damper for controlling the passage of air through the device, of a pipe arranged within the casing and having a'series of openings near its lower end, said pipe forming a space which is open at its upper end and closed at its lower end, as set forth.. I

The combination, with a casing having a top and bottom plate, having openings and a damper for controlling the passage of air through the device, of a pipe arranged within the casing and having a series of openings near its lower end, said pipe forming a space which is open at its upper end and closed at its lower end, and a rim or flange extending upwardly from the bottom plate and forming a space closed at its lower end, as set forth.
3. The combination, with a casing having top and'bottom plates having openings and a damper for closing the openings in the upper plate, of a pipe arranged within the casing and forming a space,which space is open at its upper and closed at its lower end, openings-in said pipe, and a rim or flange extending upwardly from the bottom plate and forming a space which is closed at its lower end, the openings in the bottom plate being entirely within the space surrounded by the rim or flange, the upper end of the space 71. being adapted to be closed by the damper E, as set forth.
