UNITED STATES PATENT i OFFICE CHARLES D. SMITH,`OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN STEAM-BOILER FURNACES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 155,896, dated October 13, 1874; application liled April 20, 1874.
vllo all whom it may concern:
Beit known that l, CHARLES D. SMITH, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Steam-Boiler Furnaces, of which the following is a specification:
My invention relates to certain improvements in furnaces for steam-boilers and other purposes, and it consists, lirst, in a new com bination of devices for elevating and depressing the grate, so as to increase or diminish the distance between the re and the bottom of the boiler at pleasure; and, second, in a new and improved device, in combination with a hollow fire-bridge, for admitting air in regulated quantities to said fire-bridge, as will be hereinafter fully set forth.
In the drawings, Figure l represents a pcrspective view of a furnace constructed according to my invention. Fig. 2 represents a longitudinal section of the same. Fig. 3 represents a perspective view of a portion of the furnace, showing the hollow lire-bridge with registers for admitting and regulating the air 5 and Fig. 4 shows a view of damper to regulate the air passing from the tire'bridge to the combustion-chamber of the furnace. Fig. 5 represents a sectional view of the register for admitting air to the hollow fire-wall. Fig. 6 is a modification of damper for regulating the air passing from the interior ot' the {ire-wall into the combustion-chamber.
The walls of the furnace are represented by the letters a a., and the combustion-chamber by the letter b. The boiler c is set longitudinally over the top of the furnace, as shown in Fig. 2. The grate is situated at the front of the furnace, as usual, and consists of a series of bars, d, supported by a frame, e." Said frame e is supported upon a standard, f, which slides in a hollow post or standard, g, which is slotted on one side, as shown, to admit the end of the lever h, which sets into a' recess in the standard f, and serves to elevate or depress the same. This lever is pivoted in the upper end of a standard, t', forming a fulcrum, and is provided with a handle, j, by means of which it is operated. When the standard f is elevated by means of the lever h the lever may be held so as to keep the standard in position by means of a bent rod, lc, the upper end of which may be shift-ed so a-s to fall over the end of said lever for the purpose. The
hollow lire wall or bridge is represented at t.
At one or bothends it is provided with a register, A. This register A is composed of a perforated fixed plate, A, a revolving perforated inner plate or disk, A, ahandle, A', operating the said inner plate A, and a rim., Am', by means of which it is set into the bridge-wall. Said register is similar to and operates in the same manner as the ordinary rotary register applied to stoves and other articles. The hollow bridge tis also provided with openings V at its bottom to admit air from below. These openings are provided with doors IV, to regulate the amount of air admitted through the same, as shown. Said doors are provided with handles, by means of which they may be adjusted or closed. The
grate may be provided with a shaking attachment, m n, which it is not necessary to describe, and the furnace may be provided with the pipes o o o 0 0, running through the same, and connected with the feed-water device and the boiler, in order to heat the water before entering the boiler, and a damper, a", may be placed` in the colnbustion-chamber, if desired, to regulate the draft. The air passes from the combustion-chamber through apertures u u, which may be wholly or partially covered by means of the damper x or y.
I do not, however, claim these last-mentioned devices either alone or in combination 5 but What I do claim is- 1 .The combination of the frame It, standards f and g, and lever It, for the purpose of l elevating and depressing the grate d, as herein described.
2. rIhe combination of the lever e, bent arm k, and standard f, and fulcrum-standard t, by means of which theframe e and grate cl are held in position when elevated, as herein described.
3. In combination with the lire-bridge t, the openings V, doors or plates W, for the purpose of admitting air in regulated quantities to the interior of the fire-bridge, as described.
