SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 323,250, dated July 28, 1885.
A pplication filed June 4, 1884.
To all whom, t may concern:
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER T. YOUNG, of East China township, in the county of St. Clair and State of Michigamhave invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stoves, of which the following-is a full, clear, and eX- act description.
The object ol" my invention is to provide certain new and useful improvements in stoves, whereby the quantity of coals to be consumed by the fire may be regulated, and the heat may be increased or diminished atwill; also, different kinds and sizes of coal may be used in the same stove, all of which can be accomplished very easily.
The invention consists in the combination, with the magazine ot' astove, of a ring held to move vertically in the magazine, a screw for moving the ring vertically, and of downwardly-projecting prongs formingabasket for holding the coals, which basket is opened by raising the ring and prongs and closed by lowering them, and may be done by inclosing the lower end of prongs in a movable notched ring having a hub screwed onto the lower end of vertical screw, which ring when raised by said screw will close said basket, and when lowered, open it, the basket remaining stationary in the magazine; or the basket may be raised and lowered by a rotary shaft and chains.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specilication, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is across-sectional elevation of my improved attachment for stoves. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a cross-sect-ional elevation of a modified form of my improvement, and Fig. 4 is a cross-sectional elevation of a further modification.
The magazine A has its lower part or half tapered more or less, and may be made circular, square, oval, or have any other suitable shape.
Two diametrically opposite vertical feathers or splines, B, are formed in the magazine, and the said splines pass into diainetrica-lly-opposite notches or notched lugs C of aring, D, fitted within the magazine, which ring has a cross-piece, D', having a downwardlyprojecting hub,E,in which a screw-threaded aperture is formed, and through the said aperture (No model.)
a screw-spindle, F, is passed, the upper end of which is provided with a handle, G, and is held to turn in the cross-piece H, of a ring, J, ittingin the top of the magazine, and provided on its top edge with an outwardly-projecting ange. The screw F cannot move vertically. To the ringD four, or more or less, downwardlyprojecting prongs, K,are hinged, which prongs are beveled from the upper wider to the lower pointed ends, and form a tapered basket when closed. Thel prongs K preferably have their lower ends bent inward. If the screw-spindle F is turned in one direction,the ring D is raised, as are also the prongs K, and the lower ends of the prongs are separated by the weight of the coals, thus permitting the coals to drop. If the spindle is turned in the inverse direction, the ring D is lowered, as are also the prongs K, the lower ends of which are pressed toward each other by the bottom edge of the magazine,thus preventing the coals from dropping.
In the modication shown in Fig. 3 the prongs are hinged at their Lipper ends to aring, D2, secured to the magazine by screws,or otherwise, as at c c, and project through the ring D and below the bottom of the magazine. This ring D is mounted by its hub and crossbar E D on the lower end ofthe rod, and the notches C engage the splines B, just as in Fig. l. By turning the handle G the screw will raise or lower the ring D, and thus force the lower ends of the prongs inward or allow the weight of' the coal to force them outward.
In Fig. et the operation is the same as in Fig. l, except the ring D and prongs K are raised and lowered by the chains L, secured thereto and to the rod m, j ournaled transversely in the walls of the magazine. This rod m .is provided with awheel, P, and a ratchctmechanism, n, for rotating and retaining it in any desired position.
The supply of coals delivered to the iire can be regulated very easily and rapidly, the construction of the device is very simple, the device is strong and durable, the coals and gas are fully consumed, thus preventing waste, and the device can be applied on all coal stoves, grates, &c.
Having thus described my invention,I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In a fuel-magazine for astove or grate, a

2. rlhe combination, with a fuel-magazine for a stove or grate, of a vertically-movable piece to which downwardly-projecting prongs are hinged,and mechanism for opening or closing the opening formed by the lower ends of the prongs when the movable piece is operated, substantially as herein shown and described.

4. rlhe combination, with a fuel-magazine fora stove or grate, of a vertically-movable piece to which downwardly-projecting prongs are hinged, feathers, slots, or splines in the magazine for guiding the vertically-movablepiece, and of a screw-spindle for moving the said piece vertically, and mechanism for opening or closing the opening formed by thelower ends of the prongs when the movable piece is operated, substantiallyy as herein shown and described.
5. rlhc combination,\vith the fuel-magazine A, having its lower part tapered, of the ring J, having a cross-piece, H, the screw F in the cross-piece H, the ring D, having the hub E, and of prongs K, hinged on the ring D, substantially as herein shown and described.
