Description

' PATENTED JUL 1 2 1870 Wm/asses j Y Williann` TEAMER, on A nvansvimln, rNDlAN'A.
` Laminaat No. 105,384, met .my 12,1870.
IMPROVEMENT I N STOVE-G-RATES.
The Schedule referred to ,in those Lettera Patent and making p art of the sama I, WILLIAM Taarten, of Evansville, county of Vanderburg, State of Indiana, have invented certain Improvements inStoves, Heaters, 8vo., of which the following is a specification.4 Y
Nata/rc 4and Object of the I Mention.
My invention consists mainly of a revolving fire basket, or grate, arranged adjacent to 4the oven of a stove or range,` 85e., as fully described hereafter, the advantages of the arrzmgementbeing economy nand thorough consumption of fuel, a perfect radiation of heat, and the facility afforded for raking thev re at any part of the grate, on turning the latter.-
Description of lthe Accompanying Drafting. p
Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of sufficient of a cooking-stove to illustrate my improvements;
,Figure 2, a sectional plan view of the same on the line 1 2, fig. 1"; and
Figure 3, a detached view.
General Description.
A represents the depressed hearth-plate of a cooking-stove; y l
B, 0,'and D, the front, top, and side plates of vthe same;
F, `the oven;
G, the fireplace; and
a and b, fines above and belowthe oven, communi- 4 eating with the fire-place, and leading to the outletpipe.
`The grate H is made in the-.form of a cylindrical casing or basket, open at the top, and supported atythe bottoni only by a horizontal cross-bar, J, which extends across and is fitted at its opposite ends into re cesses c o of the depressed hearth-plate, as best observed in lig. 8.`
The grate is provided with a projection or journal, l 11, which passes through the rest or supporting-bar J,
t lis enabling the grate to revolve freely upon the` said bar, but it is `prevent-ed from being accidentally Vlifted from the same by a pin or other fastenin gdevice,
c, which is passed through the journal.
The revolving grate is contained partly within the lirefplace, and partly within a frame, M, secured to the front plate ofthe stove, and forming an extension f of the fire-place, the said `frame, aswell as the ireplate I secured tothel front ofthe oven, being furnshcd with lugs Yi, `which serve to steady the grate at `said The principal advantages arising from the use of o the top, and'to thus relieve the' strain upon its journal d. i Sliding doors -x and hinged doors g/,indieated by dotted lines inthe drawing, are intended to be placed above and in front of the revolving grate, the doors :c to be opened when-the grate is to be replenished with fuel,4 and the doors y when it is to be raked.
It will ,be observed, ou reference to tig. 1, that the grate is arranged at sc low a point that the heated products' of combustion can be directed through either of the fines a or b, above or beneath the oven, according to the adjustment of the 'dampers in the fines.
my improved revolving grate are that ready access can be had to any portion of the same, for the purpose of raking the fire, while less fuel is required, and 'a more perfect combustion and radiation of heat obtained than in ordinary arrangements, where the fue-1 is in contact with solid plates, at the sides and back of the stove or fire-place.-
In order to protect the plates of the stove from the -effects of the' great heat radiated from the basketgrate, 'I' propose to.line the interior of the same, especially the tire-plate P and doors x, with hydraulic cement.
` Although I prefer that 'the revolving grate should lie cylindrical and vertical, as above described, it will be evident that it may be conical, or slightly inclined,
without departing from the main features of my invention.
Claims.
1. rIhe revolving grate or fire-basket H, arranged within a stove or range adjacent to the oven, so as to radiateheat toward the same, as described.
2. rlhe combination of the 'revolving lire-box H, the oven'F, upper flue a, and-lower line b, for the purpose specified. V
. 3. The said fire-basket projecting beyond the front plate B, in combination with doors x y, arranged as described.
In testimony whereof I havey signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WILLIAM TEAMER.
