NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
J OHANN FRIEDRICH MAHLA, OF PFORZHEIM, GERMANY.
SETTING REAL AND ARTIFICIAL STONES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 322,191, dated July 14, 1885.
' Application filed Mny29, 1885. (ModeL) To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JoHANN FRIEDRICH MAHLA, of Pforzheim, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Setting Real and Artificial Stones, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact de scription.
Heretofore precious stones, gems, 810., have been set by hand in the manufacture of jewelry. This was effected by working out the points, clamps, or claws which serve to hold the gem by filing out said jaws; but this method is slow, difficult, and so expensive that it could only be used in setting real and genuine stones. Furthermore, the jaws or claws worked iii-this manner are not strong, break off very easily on being bent over, they do not hold the gem or jewel firmly, and when the outer parts of the holders are worn they frequently bend accidentally and the jewel is lost.
The object of my invention is to avoid the above-mentioned difiiculties.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure 1 is a side view of my improved gemsetting. Fig. 2 is a sectional view ofthe same.
In making my improved gem-settings, the above-mentioned jaws or claws a are drawn out of the metal by means of punches or stamps, and the result is that the jaws or claws are hollow and are much stronger and stiffer than the solid jaws. They can be bent upon the gems more easily, hold the same more firmly, and are not liable to break off while being worked.
In the settings as made heretofore, the number of jaws or claws was reduced as much as possible on account of the great amount of labor ,each claw required. In my new settings as many claws may be formed as desired to hold the gem safely without increasing the cost of the setting.
I prefer to produce the settings by drawing and stamping the metal in a draw-press pro vided with the necessary dies and stamps; but the settings can also be formed by hand with the said dies and stamps. The clamps a are formed as hollow ribs on a ring-shaped or other plate, the ribs projecting from the outer surface.
The setting can be made to hold one or any number of gems.
As the settings are very cheap, and can be made in brass, composition, &c., as well as in gold and platinum, they can be used for artificial gems, paste, &c., as well as for real and genuine gems and jewels.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. As an improved article of manufacture,
a setting for, real or artificial gems provided with hollow claws orjaws for holding the gem, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. As an improved article of manufacture, a setting for real or artificial gems, consisting of a metal ring or piecein which hollow heads
