Application iilcd March 9, i885. (No model.)
- vided With anti-friction rollers; and the object ofthe invention is to hold the rollers in place more securely, to reduce the Wear, and make the box more durable.
The in vent-ion consists in details of construe tion and the arrangement of parts, as will be i'nlly set forth and described hereinafter, and pointed out. in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying dravf'ings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in -botli the figures.
Figure l is a cross-sectional view of our improved journalbox on the line :t: as, Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same on the line y y, Fig. l.
The axle A is provided near its end with an annular groove, B, adapted to receive the anti-friction roller C, and `forming a head, D, on the ezid of the axle. The box is formed of the upper and lower sections or halves, E and F, each provided with a semicircular recess or cavity, l, for receiving the rollers C and the axle. Each section is provided in its outer end with an inwardly-tapered semicircular recess, I, forming an opening` in which the head D is located.
The anti-friction rollers C are held in the groove B in the axle by a split steel spring-band, H, passed around them. The two sections E and F are held together by four bolts, J, passed through them o at the corners and having nuts K. An oilcliannel, L, leads from an oil chamber or box.
ML, formed on the top of the upper section, E, and provided with a hinged cover, N, to the cavity containing the rollers C. A vertically- 45 sliding dovetailed plate, P, closes the end opening of the box, and prevents sand and dust from passing into the box. IThe axle and the rollers C are thoroughly lubricated. as the roller C must pass through the oil in the cav- 5o ity Grin the bottom section, F. The axle A. the rollers C, and the band H are made of steel, and thus last very long and do not Wear off.
The box is very simple in construction, and 55 can be taken apart very easily.
Having thus described our invention, what We claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, s-
ln a journal, the combination, with the axle 6o having the annular groove B, of the box-sec tions E F, provided with cavities G, the antifriction rollers C in the groove B, and caviA ties G, and of the split steel spring-band H, surrounding the saisdmllers, substantially as 65 herein shown and described.
