IMPROVEMENT IN JOURNAL=BOXES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 131,376, dated September 17, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LORENZ SCHMID, of Cleveland, in the county of Ouyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and Improved J ournal-Box and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and
complete description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing making part of the same.

This invention has for its object the continuous application of oil to the journal-bearings of lines of sh afting, &c.,. thereby avoiding a frequent application of oil by hand to the journal-seats. The invention consists of two rings, which, however, may be more or less, as the size of the journal may demand. Said rings are loosely hung upon the bearings, and depend therefrom into an oil-reservoir constructed immediately under the journal-seat, which is filled with oil, and in which the dependent rings dip and revolve, thereby conveying the,
' oil to the journal by their rotatory movement.
The following is a description of the device as constructed and operated for the purpose specified.
In the drawing, Fig. 1, A represents a journal, and which has its bearing in a journal-box consisting of the two sections B O, the lower section, 0, being the journal-seat, and section B the cap. In the journal-seat or lower section of the box is formed a reservoir, D, Fig. 3, extending the length of about half way round the seat, as shown. In the top of the chamber or reservoir, and which is the immediate bearing-surface for the journal, is opening F, through which the rings G depend when hanging from the journal, as shown in Fig. 2, the depth of the reservoir being sufficient for that purpose, as will be seen in Fig. 3. The reservoir D is formed of the lower portion of the seator box 0, and forms a part of the same, and extending the entire length of said box, thereby avoiding the necessity of having a supplementalreservoir; and the ends of the box 0 coming in contact with the shaft A are beveled off inward from said shaft, so that the oil from the shaft will not escape outward from the shaft, but all waste oil will run down these inclined sides a a and return to the reservoir D, the advantage of which is that by this construction it is not necessary to have a supplemental box or reservoir extending out beyond the edges or ends of the journal-box to catch the'waste oil.
- It will be evident that when the reservoir is filled with oil the rings will be immersed therein, or so much thereof as will be hanging below the journal; hence, as the journal revolves,
the rings, in consequence of their weight, will revolve with the journal, and thereby oil it by leaving thereon some of the oil with which it is covered by revolving in the reservoir of oil or other material. By this means the journal is kept at all times oiled, requiring nocare and attention further than to see that the reservoir is supplied with oil.
