UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ANDREW H. FRANK AND GEORGE SPIRE, OF BUFFALO, NEW YORK.
impeovrmeur m SPINDLES.
Specification formln g part of Letters Patent No. 147,760; dated February 24, 1874 application filed October 21, 1873.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that we, ANDREW H. FRANK and GEORGE SPIRE, both of the city of Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented certain Improvements in Steps and Lubricating Cups for Shafts, of which the following is a specification:
The invention relates to the construction of the step or lower bearing of vertical shafts, and a receptacle for oil cast therewith, as is hereinafter fully set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a vertical section of our improvements. Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the same.
Like letters of reference designate like parts in each of the figures.
A is the main body of the step, cast with a cavity or receptacle, b, for the oil or other lubricating material. In one side of the cup or cavity is formed a recess, 0, constituting one half of the step or hearing for the shaft. D is the removable other half of the bearing, inclosing one-half of the shaft E, and extending half-way under the lower end thereof. It is fitted to the portion A in any suitable manner, so as to be retained against lateral displacement, while a set-screw, f, screwing through a hole in the side of the cup I), presses against the outer side of the box D, which is formed with a suitable socket to receive the end of the bolt,
and holds this box properly in place in contact with the side of the shaft. This bolt is provided with a jam-nut, f, on the outside of the cup, to prevent the escape of oil through the bolt-hole, a rubber washer or other packin g being interposed, if required. The central portion of the faces of the box D are contiguous to the box A, formed with slight recesses d, as are also the edges thereof, as shown at d, to form a passage for the oil to the shaft. Strips of felt, 'g, or other porous packing ma 'terial, may be arranged between the edges of the box D and the contiguous seat of the bear ing A.
The lubricating-oil is filled in the cup I), which may be provided with any suitable cover, if desired, when a thorough lubrication of the shaft is insured until the oil in the cup is exhausted, as the packing g is kept saturated by capillary attraction so long as any oil re mains in the cup.
The boxes can be lined with babbitt-metal in the usual manner, the box D being readily removed when required for substituting a new lining, for cleaning out the cup I), or for any other purpose.
It is olwious that the box D may be secured in place by various means other than that dc scribed.
We claim- 1. The combinat-ion,with tliehalf step or casting A, provided with an oil-receptacle, b, of the removable half-box D and set-bolt], sub stantially as liereinbefore set forth.
2. The combination, with the half-step A, provided with oil-receptacle I), of the packing g and box D, provided with recesses 61 d, as and for the purpose herein shown and described.
ANDREW H. FRANK. GEORGE SPIRE. Vitnesses JNo. J. BONNER, S. DEXTER WELoH.
