SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 314,731, dated IJlarch 31, 1885.

To all whom/'it may concern:A
Be it known that I, FREDERICK SIEBERT, of St. Louis, in the county of St. Louis and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Self-Lubricating Journal-Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an iinproved selflubricating journalbox for loose pulleys, transmitting shafts, 85e.; and the invention consists of a double-walled journal-box provided With an annular oil-space and with radial oil-duets that extend through the inner Wall of the boX, so as to supply the oil to the i journal.
The inner and outer walls are connected by stays at dianietricaily opposite points, and provided with a screw-plug for iilling the interior oil-space.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l represents avertical transverse section of a loose pulley with niy improved journal-box shown in longitudinal section. Fig. is a vertical transverse section of the journal-box, taken on line x :10, Fig. l; and Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse section of iny improved journal-box shown as arranged for a transmittingshaft.

The annular oil-space a eoinniunicates by radial oil-ducts b b, which are arranged, preferably, at diainet-rically-opposite points of the inner wall of the journal-box with thejou'rnal of the shaft B. The inner and outer walls of thejournal-box A are cast in one piece, theannular oil-space being formed by arranging in the opposite ends of the` box vent-holes,whieh are afterward closed by suitable plugs, d, as shown in Fig. l. The Walls of the journal-box A are stitfened by vmeans of stays e, which are arranged at diametrically-opposite sides. The stays e e iinpart the required degree of stiffness to the box, so that the hub of the pulley (l may be secured thereto, as shown in Figs. l and 2. When the box is used :for the journal of a transmittngshaft, B, it is supported by means of screws with conical ends on a suitable bracket-frame. The oil is supplied to the annular oil-space through an opening closed by the screw-plugf.
A loose pulley with a self-oiling `]ournalbox of the construction described can run from four to six weeks without oiling. As the journal-box is wider than the pulley it has the advantage that it has a larger bearing for the saine, so as to secure the tighter and better fitting. of the belt on the rim. Yhen used for loose pulleys, the journal-box 1s retained on the shaft by means of a sleeveshaped collar, C', that is secured by'a clamping-screw, g, to the shaft, as shown in Fig. 1.
Ajournal-box thus constructed may be cast with facility, and when worn it may be separated from the other portions of the pulley and replaced by a new boX. The end openings or perforations d facilitate the cleaning of the oil-chamber as well as the casting of the box.
Having thus described my invent-ion, I cl aim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. A self-oiling journal-box for loose pulleys, shafts, Snc., consisting of a double-Walled annular box provided with perforations closed by plugs at its ends, between the walls, with radial oil-ducts in the inner Wall, with a supply-opening in the outer wall closed by a plug, and with central stays between the walls, substantially as described.

A self-oiling journal-box for loose pulleys, shafts, &e,consisting of a double-walled annular box provided with perforations closed by plugs at its ends, between the walls, with radial oil-ducts in the inner wall, with a supply-opening in the onterwall closed by aplug, and with central stays between the walls, in combination with the pulley-rim. detachable spokes, bolts for fastening said spokes to said rim, and set-screws fer adjusting said spokes to said box, substantially as described.
