DUAL SEAT ASSEMBLY FOR FLUSH TYPE TOILET Filed Jan. 29, 1963 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 INVENTOR. ///p0 kf/ifofi United States Patent 3,210,777 DUAL SEAT ASSEMBLY FOR FLUSH TYPE TOILET Hideo Katoh, 724 Kamikizaki, Urawa, Japan Filed Jan. 29, 1963, Ser. No. 254,742 1 Claim. (Cl. 4-235) This invention relates to new and useful improvements in seats for water closets, and more particularly provides double closet seats especially designed for use by both adults and children.
It has heretofore been usual that the water closet of the standard type for adults has been used both by adults and children, except some few cases, so it has been unsuitable for children, the opening of the bowl being so much larger than a childs bottom that the latter can readily slip down into the bowl, thus presenting great inconvenience and danger to the child in use.
An object of the present invention is to provide, for a flush type toilet including a commode or closet bowl, double seats, including a lower sea-t and an upper one, the upper one being overlapped on said lower one, both of which are pivotally attached to the open upper end of the closet bowl, thereby permitting use of the same for both adults and children.
Another object of the present invention is to provide, for a flush type toilet including a commode or closet bowl, double seats, including an outer seat and an inner one, the inner one being fitted inside the outer seat, and both seats being pivotally attached to the open upper end of the closet bowl, thereby permitting use of the same for both adults and children.
Other important objects of the present invention reside in its relatively simple construction, adaptation for ready use, and relatively inexpensive manufacturing, installing and maintaining costs.
These together with other objects and advantages which will become subsequently apparent reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
FIG. 1 is a plan view of a flush type toilet provided with the overlapped double seats made in accordance with this invention;
FIG. 2 is a side elevational view partly broken away of the flush type toilet shown in FIG. 1;
FIG. 3 is a fragmentary side elevational view showing the childs seat raised in the embodiment shown in FIGS. 1 and 2;
FIG. 4 is a plan view of another embodiment of the double seats made in accordance with this invention in such a way that an inner seat may be fitted inside an outer one;
FIG. 5 is a side elevational view partly broken away of the flush type toilet shown in FIG. 4; and
FIG. 6 is a side elevational view partly broken away of the device in FIGS. 4 and 5 with an adults seat raised up.
Referring now specifically to FIGS. 1, 2 and 3, a flush type toilet to which this invention is applicable comprises a bowl generally designated by the reference numeral 1, an adults seat 2 having parallelly extending end portions 3 and 3' secured to said bowl 1 by means of a pivot 6, and a childs seat 4 having a downwardly bent end portion 5 fitted between said end portions 3 and 3' of the adults seat 2, and similarly secured to the bowl 1 by the same pivot 6.
The embodiment illustrated in FIGS. 4, 5 and 6 comprises a bowl 1 connected to an ordinary water main, an
3,210,777 Patented Oct. 12, 1965 outer seat 22 having an end portion 3, with a recess 13 formed inside said end portion, pivotally attached to bowl 1 by means of a pivot 6, and a ring-shaped inner seat 17 fittable inside the outer seat 22, and having a projecting end 9 inserted into recess 13, and pivotally secured to the bowl 1 by means of the same pivot 6.
The double seats made in accordance with this invention are made of either plastic or wood, and it is preferable to provide buffer fittings 10 such as soft rubber beneath the upper and inner seats, respectively, in order to prevent these seats from making sharp or rigid contact with the lower seats and with the bowl rim, respectively.
For a child, the water closet according to this invention shown in FIGS. 1, 2 and 3 is used with the upper seat 4 set down, while the upper seat 4 is raised up when the present closet is used for an adult. Likewise, the closet illustrated in FIGS. 4, 5 and 6 is used by a child with both seats set down, while the inner seat 17 is raised up for an adult.
While specific embodiments of the invention have been shown and described in detail to illustrate the application of the principles of the invention, it will be understood that the invention may be embodied otherwise without departing from such principles.
What is claimed as new is as follows:
For use with a flush type toilet having a bowl including an upper rim, a dual seat assembly comprising, in combination, a single pivot shaft, means supporting said shaft spacedly above and parallel to the upper rim of said bowl at the rear end of the latter, said shaft extending laterally, a first generally horseshoe shape adult seat dimensioned and arranged to extend the full longitudinal extent of the bowl to rest on the upper rim thereof, said first seat being open at its front and having its rear portion recessed to define spaced longitudinal arms connected at the extreme rear of said first seat, said arms pivotally mounted upon said shaft, a second generally oval shape childs seat arranged to extend the full longitudinal extent of the bowl, said second seat having an external periphery substantially conforming in shape to the internal periphery of said first seat and dimensioned for passing of said second seat entirely through the internal periphery of said first seat for location alternatively above and below the plane thereof and nesting of said childs seat wholly within the internal periphery of and in coplanarity with said first seat, and including a pivot portion disposed within said recess between said arms and independently pivotally mounted upon said shaft, the free end of said second seat being supportably engageable directly upon the front portion of the upper rim of the bowl, the free ends of said first and second seats adapted to rest simultaneously on said rim when they are coplanar.
