No. 242,131 14 Claims. (Cl. 40-120) This invention relates to a desk calendar holder.
The problem in the art to which this inVention appertains is to provide a calendar holder molded of living plastic type material; and a calendar holder that 18 of unitary construction, cheap to manufacture and of durable quality. There is a need for a main body to receive and retain a telephone numbers register card, a front cover to receive and retain a calendar and a top cover or the message of the advertiser. An efficient and effective means must be provided to latch the main body to the top cover and to retain the front cover and the top cover. The front cover must be hinged to the main body and likewise the main body must be hinged to the top cover.
Therefore it is an object of this invention to provide a desk calendar holder that is made of living plastic type material; and that is of unitary construction, cheap to manufacture and of durable quality.
It is another object of the invention to provide a desk calendar holder that has a main body hinged to a front cover and a top cover.
Another object of the invention is to provide a desk calendar holder whose main body is constructed to removably receive a telephone numbers register card.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a desk calendar holder whose front cover is constructed to removably receive a calendar therein.
Another object of the invention is to provide a desk calendar holder whose main body and top cover are latched together by bosses on one member and aligned slots on the other upon relief of the bosses along their longitudinal axes.
An object of the invention is to provide a desk calendar holder wherein another embodiment of latching the main body and top cover may be utilized; and wherein bosses on one member are wedged into aligned slots on the other with relief of the bosses laterally of the slots.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a desk calendar holder whose top cover has an undercut with nubs laterally projecting therefrom engaged underneath by a lip formed and carried by the end of the front cover to latch the top cover and front cover.
Another object of the invention is to provide a desk calendar holder wherein another embodiment of securing the top cover and front cover may be utilized; and wherein the end of the front cover is extended to provide an interference fit with the top cover to thereby secure the top cover and front cover.
An additional object of the invention is to provide a desk calendar holder wherein another embodiment of a snap lock is utilized to latch the main body and top cover.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a desk calendar holder wherein still another embodiment of a snap lock is utilized to latch the main body and top cover.
Moreover, it is within the concept of this invention as more particularly described in the detailed specification and as claimed in the appended claims that each one of the four embodiments of latching the main body and the top cover may be combined with each one of the two embodiments of securing the top cover and front cover. Therefore, this invention accordingly lends itself to eight combinations of latching the main body and front cover, and securing the top cover and front cover.
These and other objects of the invention should be appreciated from the detailed specification taken in conjunction with the drawings, wherein like reference numetals refer to similar par-ts throughout the several views, in which:

In FIG. 1, reference numeral 1 generally refers to the invention of the one piece desk calendar holder. This calendar holder and all the embodiments hereinafter described are of suitable plastic material, such as the commonly referred to living plastic and of unitary construction.
The calendar holder has incorporated therewith a main body 3, front cover 5 and top cover 7 as shown. As shown more discernably in FIG. 4, the telephone numbers register card 9, of paper material, is received and retained by the main body 3.
The main body 3 has sides 11 which are formed at an angle so that the numbers register card 9 may be more easily seen by the viewer. FIG. 3 shows the sides 11 of the main body 3.
In the lower portion of the main body 3 is a back plate 13 upon which the telephone numbers register card 9 lies. A hole 15 is formed in the back plate 13 to save material in molding of the back plate 13. Adjacent to the sides 11 of the main body 3 are elongated slots 17 which receive the lateral portions of the register card 9 therethrough and beneath the sides 11.
The hinge 19 formed of material between the main body 3 and front cover 5 has slot 21 formed in the bight portion thereof and cut out end portions 23 for purposes of preventing torquing of the front cover 5 in rotary movement of its hinge 19 relative to the main body 3.
As shown in FIG. 2, front cover 5 comprises top 25, bottom 27 and sides 29. Sides 29 have lateral portions 31 extending therefrom as shown; and top and bottom 27 have their respective overlying portions 33 and 35 eX- tending therefrom, as shown more discernably in FIG. I to provide thereby a receptacle, in which calendar 37 may be removably received.
A viewing slot 39 is provided in the upper portion of front cover 5 for purposes of viewing the telephone numbers register card 9 and as a means to grip and lift up front cover 5 when same is latched to top cover 7, as will be described.
Top cover 7 configured as shown has space thereon for advertising indica 41.
An undercut 43 formed on top cover 7 as shown has two nubs 45 laterally projecting therefrom to provide for the latching of front cover 5 and top cover 7. For this purpose, front cover 5 has a 45 lip 47 such that upon closing of front cover 5 against top cover 7, lip 47 is latched beneath the two nubs 45.
It should be noted and understood that the points where top 25 and sides 29 meet are rounded as indicated at 49 to facilitate the latching of lip 47 under nubs 45.
The rear portion 41 of main body 3 is formed at an angle as shown and the front portion 53 of top cover 7 is also formed at an angle such that upon retained abutment of the surfaces of rear portion 51 and front portion 53 the top cover 7 will be disposed upwardly at the angle as shown in FIG. 4.
Formed in the rear portion 51 are four slots 55 which receive therein bosses 57 formed upstanding from front portion 53 of top cover 7 in alignment with slots 55 to thereby retain in engagement the surfaces of rear portion 51 and front portion 53.
Bosses 57 are circular in cross-section and have their top rear portions 59 beveled to facilitate reception of bosses 57 in slots 55. There is an interfering engagement of the top portions of the bosses 57 with slots 55 that is obviated to some extent by beveling of the top rear portion 59 to permit relief and sliding of these portions 59 within the slots 55.
Sectors 61 are removed from the rear portions of bosses 57 in order that after the bosses 57 have slidden over and within slots 55, the downward, longitudinal, axial force component on bosses 57 brought about by the initial engagement of the bosses 57 with the slots 53 may be relieved; and the ends 63 of bosses 57 may move upwardly from such relief to engagingly latch thereby the main body 3 and top cover 7 by the reception of the thickness of the material of the rear portion of 51 of main body 3 in dimensional spaces provided by the sectors 61 removed from the bosses 57.
In FIG. 7 is shown a view of another embodiment to latch main body 65 and top cover 67. Bosses 69 upstanding from the front portion 71 of top cover 67 engage aligned slots 73 formed in the rear portion 75 of main body 65. The front portion 71 and rear portion 75 are both formed at an angle such that upon retained abutment of portions 71 and 75 the top cover 67 will be disposed upwardly at the angle as shown.
Sufiicient clearance is maintained in the configuration of the bosses 69 and slots 73 such that the bosses 69 at no time engage the terminal portions 77 of slots 73.
As shown more discernably in FIG. 8, the lateral portions 79 of the slots 73 are formed arcuately outward such that initial contact of a boss 69 with its aligned slot 73 will affect a wedging deformation of the boss 69. The outside width of the slot 73 is less than the diameter of boss 69.
Further engagement of the boss 69 with its aligned slot 73 will allow, inasmuch as the lateral portions 79 are configured arcuately outward, the boss to relieve itself from such deformation and thereby latch the main body 65 and top cover 67 FIG. 9 shows top cover 67 having a uniformly flat surface.
In FIG. 10, is shown the assembly of the main body 65, top cover 67 and front cover 81. The end 83 of the front cover 81 is extended sufficiently outwardly as shown to provide an interference fit with the rear portion 75 of the top cover 67. Upon end 83 engaging rear portion 75 in abutting relationship, end 83 will wedge itself against rear portion 75 and retain the top cover 67 and the front cover 81 in the position of engagement.
In FIG. 11 is shown a view of another embodiment to latch the main body 87 hinged to top cover 89 similarly as main body 3 is hinged to top cover 7. Bosses 91 up standing from the front portion 93 of top cover 89 initially engage aligned slots 95 formed in rear portion 97 of main body 87.
The bosses 91 are of circular configuration in cross-section. However, it is within the concept of this invention to make the bosses of different shapes, such as elliptical configuration in cross-section.
The lateral width of the slots 95 is less than the diameter of the bosses 91 which results in and effectuates engagement interference initially of bosses 91 with slots 95 in the constrained rotary movement of the hinged top cover 89 relative to the main body 87.
As shown more discernably in FIG. 13, a relief portion 99 is configured in the bight portion of each slot 95. Relief portion 99 is configured such that the two planes of the relief portion 99 on each side of the rear portion 97 intersecting each boss 91 at the angle of incidence of the boss in the completed rotary latching movement of the front portion 93 of top cover 89 relative to the rear portion 97 of main body 87 define and form a configuration in slot 95 that is complemental to boss 91 at such angle on incidence. Moreover, were the hinge joining the main body 87 and top cover 89 removed, the boss 91 could be easily removed from the complementally configured relief portion 99 by movement of boss 91 in a direction similar to the angle of incidence of the completed rotary latching movement of the front portion of top cover 89 relative to the rear portion 97 of main body 87.
There is a snapping of the bosses 91 after their completed rotary movement for purposes of latching of the main body 87 and top cover 89. The two planar portions of the relief portions 99 as previously described relieve the bosses 91, but the upper unrelieved portions of the bosses 91 will latchingly abut against the other upper portions of the slots 95. I
In FIG. 14 the bosses 101 are similar to the bosses 99 with the exception that uniform longitudinal segments 103, symmetrical with reference to their arrangement and removal from each side of the bosses 101, are removed as shown.
The slots formed in the main body in the embodiment of FIG. 14 are similar to the slots formed in the main body 87 including a relief portion for each one of the bosses similarly configured to the relief portion 99. The latching operation in the embodiment of FIG. 14 is, therefore, similar to the latching operation described with reference to FIGS. l1, l2 and 13.
It should be appreciated that there are two embodiments of latching means for the front cover and the top cover. One embodiment is shown and described with reference to FIGS. 1, 3 and 6; the other embodiment is shown and described with reference to FIG. 10.
Further, it should be noted and appreciated that there are four embodiments that may be utilized as latching means for the main body and top cover. The first embodiment is shown and described with reference to FIGS. 1 and 5; the second embodiment is shown and described with reference to FIGS. 7 and 8; the third embodiment is shown and described with reference to FIGS. 11, 12 and 13; and the fourth embodiment is shown and described with reference to FIG. 14.
Either one of the two embodiments shown and described for the latching means for the front cover and the top cover may be utilized in conjunction with one of the four embodiments shown and described for the latching means for the main body and the top cover. The structural changes necessary to effect these results should be obvious.
It should be noted and appreciated that the hinge which connects the main body 3 and top cover 7 is also formed of the living plastic material of which the calendar holder is constructed and molded. Hinge 85 is one continuous piece of this type of material and is common to the main body 3 and top cover 7. Hinge 85 common to the entire width of main body 3 and top cover 7 by construction is not as flexible as hinge 19.
The lateral portions of the telephone numbers register card 9 are inserted in the elongated slots 17 as heretofore described. As viewed in FIG. 2, the lateral portions of the calendar 37, made of a suitable paper-like material, are placed flat upon lateral portions 31 of sides 29. The top of the calendar 37 is tucked or otherwise placed suitably under the overlying portion 33 and the bottom of the calendar 37 is tucked or otherwise placed suitably under overlying portion 35. When one desires to obtain a telephone number endorsed or otherwise written previously on the telephone numbers register card 9, he can either lift the front cover upwardly by gripping a portion of the viewing slot 39 appropriately, or he can move the top cover in a backward direction to release the top cover from its engaged position with the top cover and thereafter lift the front cover by appropriate manipulation of same.
Having thusly described my invention, I desire to obtain by Letters Patent the following claims to my invention:
1. A desk calendar holder comprising a front cover, main body and top cover; a hinge provided to flexibly join the front cover to the main body and a hinge provided to flexibly joint the main body to the top cover; said main body having a plate upon which to support a telephone numbers register card and elongated slots laterally adjacent said plate to receive the inserted lateral portions of said register card; said front cover having lateral portions extending from sides of the front cover upon which lateral portions of said calendar are placed with the top and bottom of said calendar tucked under portions overlying from the top and bottom of said front cover; the front portion of said top cover having upstanding bosses aligned with slots formed on the rear portion of said main body to latch said top cover and main body; and means to latch said front cover and top cover.
2. The subject matter as claimed in claim 1, wherein sectors are removed from the rear portions of said bosses to provide thereby a dimensional space for reception of the material of said main body rear portion upon abutment of said main body and top cover and relief of force components on said bosses in latching of said main body and top cover.
3. A desk calendar holder comprising a front cover, main body and top cover; a hinge provided to flexibly join the front cover to the main body and a hinge pro vided to flexibly join the main body to the top cover; said main body having a plate upon which to support a telephone numbers register card and elongated slots laterally adjacent said plate to receive the inserted lateral portions of said register card; said front cover having lateral portions extending from sides of the front cover upon which lateral portion of said calendar are placed with the top and bottom of said calendar tucked under portions overlying from the top and bottom of said front cover; the front portion of said top cover having upstanding bosses aligned with slots formed in the rear portion of said main body, the lateral portions of said slots being formed arcuately outward such that initial engagement of said bosses with their aligned slots will deform the bosses and thereafter allow relief of said bosses upon fur ther engagement to thereby latch the top cover and main body; and means to latch said front cover and top cover.
4. A desk calendar holder comprising a front cover, main body and top cover; a hinge provided to flexibly join the front cover to the main body and a hinge provided to flexibly join the main body to the top cover; said main body having a plate upon which to support a telephone numbers register card and elongated slots laterally adjacent said plate to receive the inserted lateral portions of said register card; said front cover having lateral por- 6. tions extending from sides of the front cover upon which lateral portions of said calendar are placed with the top and bottom of said calendar tucked under portions overlying from the top and bottom of said front cover; means to latch said main body and said top cover; and an undercut formed on said top cover with nubs laterally projecting therefrom for latching therewith by a lip of said front cover receiving beneath said nubs.
5. A desk calendar holder comprising a front cover, main body and top cover; a hinge provided to flexibly join the front cover to the main body and a hinge provided to flexibly join the main body to the top cover; and said main body having a plate upon which to support a telephone numbers register card and elongated slots laterally adjacent said plate to receive the inserted lateral portions of said register card; said front cover having lateral portions extending from sides of the front cover upon which lateral portions of said calendar are placed with the top and bottom of said calendar tucked under portions overlying from the top and bottom of said front cover; the front portion of said top cover having upstanding bosses aligned with slots formed on the rear portion of said main body to latch said top cover and main body; and an undercut formed on said top cover with nubs laterally projecting therefrom for latching therewith by a lip of said front cover receivable beneath said nubs.

The subject matter as claimed in claim 5, wherein sectors are removed from the rear portions of said bosses to provide thereby a dimensional space for reception of the material of said main body rear portion upon abutment of said main body and top cover, and relief of force components on said bosses in latching of said main body and top cover.
77 A desk calendar holder comprising a front cover, main body and top cover; a hinge provided to flexibly join the front cover to the main body and a hinge provided to flexibly join the main body to the top cover; said main body having a plate upon which to support a telephone numbers register card and elongated slots laterally adjacent said plate to receive the inserted lateral portions of said register card; said front cover having lateral portions extending from sides of the front cover upon which lateral portions of said calendar are placed with the top and bottom of said calendar tucked under portions overlying from the top and bottom of said front cover; the front portion of said top cover having upstanding bosses aligned with slots formed in the rear portion of said main body, the lateral portions of said slots being formed arcuately outward such that initial engagement of said bosses with their aligned slots will deform the slots and thereafter allow relief of said slots upon further engagement to thereby latch the top cover and main body; and an undercut formed on said top cover with nubs laterally projecting therefrom for latching therewith by a lip of said front cover receivable beneath said nubs.
8. A desk calendar holder comprising a front cover, main body and top cover; a hinge provided to flexibly join the front cover to the main body and a hinge provided to flexibly join the main body to the top cover; said main body having a plate upon which to support a telephone numbers register card and elongated slots laterally adjacent said plate to receive the inserted lateral portions of said register card; said front cover having lateral portions extending from sides of the front cover upon which lateral portions of said calendar are placed, with the top and bottom of said calendar tucked under portions overlying from the top and bottom of said front cover; the front portion of said top cover having upstanding bosses aligned with slots formed in the rear portion of said main body, the lateral portions of said slots being formed arcuately outward such that initial engagement of said bosses with their aligned slots will deform the slots and thereafter allow relief of said slots upon further engagement to thereby latch the top cover and main body; and said front cover having an end extended outwardly to provide interference fit with the rear portion of said top cover to provide wedging engagement of said front cover and top cover.
9. A desk calendar holder comprising a front cover, main body and top cover; a hinge joining the front cover and main body, and a hinge joining the main body and top cover; said main body having a plate supporting a telephone numbers register card and elongated slots laterally adjacent said plate to receive the inserted lateral portions of said register card; said front cover having lateral portions extending from sides of the front cover upon which lateral portions of said calendar are placed with the top and bottom of said calendar tucked under portions overlying from the top and bottom of said front cover; the front portion of said top cover having upstanding bosses aligned with slots formed in the rear portion of said main body to latch said top cover and main body, the lateral width of said slots being less than the diameter of said bosses and said slots having relief portions formed therein complemental to said bosses at the angle of incidence of the completed rotary movement of said top cover relative to said main body; and means to latch said front cover and top cover.
10. The subject matter as claimed in claim 9, wherein uniform segments are symmetrically removed from each side of said bosses relative to their longitudinal axes.
11. The subject matter as claimed in claim 9, wherein said means to latch said front cover and top cover comprises an undercut formed on said top cover with nubs laterally projecting therefrom for latching therewith by a lip of said front cover receivable beneath said nubs and in abutting relationship therewith.
12. The subject matter as claimed in claim 11, wherein said bosses have uniform segments symmetrically removed from each side of said bosses relative to their longitudinal axes.
13. The subject matter as claimed in claim 9, wherein said means to latch said front cover and top cover comprises an end extended outwardly from said front cover to provide interference fit with the rear portion of said top cover to provide wedging engagement of said front cover and top cover.
14. The subject matter as claimed in claim 13, wherein said bosses have uniform segments symmetrically removed from each side of said bosses relative to their longitudinal axes.

Claims (1)

1. A DESK CALENDER HOLDER COMPRISING A FRONT COVER, MAIN BODY AND TOP COVER; A HINGE PROVIDED TO FLEXIBLY JOIN THE FRONT COVER TO THE MAIN BODY AND A HINGE PROVIDED TO FLEXIBLY JOINT THE MAIN BODY TO THE TOP COVER; SAID MAIN BODY HAVING A PLATE UPON WHICH TO SUPPORT A TELEPHONE NUMBERS REGISTER CARD AND ELONGATED SLOTS LATERALLY ADJACENT SAID PLATE TO RECEIVE THE INSERTED LATERAL PORTIONS OF SAID REGISTER CARD; SAID FRONT COVER HAVING LATERAL PORTIONS EXTENDING FROM SIDES OF THE FRONT COVER UPON WHICH LATERAL PORTIONS OF SAID CALENDAR ARE PLACED WITH THE TOP AND BOTTOM OF SAID CALENDAR TUCKED UNDER PORTIONS OVERLYING FROM THE TOP AND BOTTOM OF SAID FRONT COVER; THE FRONT PORTION OF SAID TOP COVER HAVING UPSTANDING BOSSES ALIGNED WITH SLOTS FORMED ON THE REAR PORTION OF SAID MAIN BODY TO LATCH SAID TOP COVER AND MAIN BODY; AND MEANS TO LATCH SAID FRONT COVER AND TOP COVER.
