JOSEPH It. KENNEDY, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
RULER ATTACHMENT FOR SLATES.
EPECIPICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 320,142, dated June 16, 1885.
Application filed July 26, 1884. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, J osnrn R. KENNEDY, of the city and county of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Ruler for Slates, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a plan view of a slate having my invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is an edge view of the ruler removed from the slate frame; and Fig. 4 is a plan view of the same, showing the pencil-sharpener in posi tion for use.
The invention will first be described in con nection with the drawings, and then pointed out in the claims.
The ruler A is by preference made of sheet tin, and is adapted to be attached, preferably, to the edge of the slate-frame B by the tongues a a of the attachment entering the slot Z), made in the frame, as shown clearly in Figs. 1 and 2, the tongue a being bent slightly away from the tongue a to form a. spring for holding the attachment securely in place in the slot 1) when not removed for use. The ruler A is formed by first bending a suitable blank of tin or other sheet metal to form the straight tube 0, and then bending the blank to form the tongues a a, and then one end of the tube 0 is closed by the permanent plug (1 and the other by the removable plug e, so that the tube 0 is adapted to receive and hold a slate-pencil, f, and the tube 0, being made perfectly straight, also serves as a ruler for making straight lines upon the slate. The removable plug 6 in this instance is provided with the blade so that by reversing the plug 6 in the open end of the tube 0 the blade may be conveniently used for sharpening the pencil or for other purposes. The blade 9 is made narrower than the diameter of the tube 0, so that it is adapted to be kept in the tube with the plug 6, as shown in Fig. 1, when not in use. The edge of the tongue a is for the most part made straight, to serve as a ruler, and the upper surface of the said tongue is graduated, as shown at h, Fig. 4:, so that with this device maps and other outline figures may be drawn to a scale, if desired.
Constructed as described, it will be seen that the device being attached to the edge of the slate-frame in no manner interferes with the packing or handling or use of the slate, and is always at hand for use, and, being adapted to hold a pencil and sharpener, and adapted also for use as a ruler and measuring implement, the device is very convenient and desirable, and it is rather ornamental than otherwise to the slate-frame.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The ruler A, formed with tongues adapted to enter a slot made in the edge of the slateframe, substantially as described.
2. The combined slate and ruler consisting of the slate having its frame B formed with the slot 1) in its edge, andthe ruler A, consisting of the tube 0 and the tongues a a, for entering the groove of the slate-frame, substantially as herein shown and described.
3. The ruler A, for attachment to slates, formed with the straight tube a and the springtongues a a, the tongue a being graduated, substantially as herein shown and described.
JOSEPH B. KENNEDY.
