ROLL FOR/METAL 3011s.
Patented June 9, 1 8888 AT V NITED STATES PATENT Fries.
WILLIAM A. MOGOOL, OF PERRYVILLE, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO PAUL OLIVER, OF ASHLAND COUNTY, OHIO.
ROLL .FOR M ETAL RODS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 319,832, dated June 9, 1885.
Application filed May 12, 1884. (No model.) i
useful Improvements in Rolls for Rolling Metal Rods; and I do hereby declare the fol lowing to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to rolls for rolling metal rods, the object being to provide rolls of such construction as to roll a continuous longitudinal groove in a metal rod, as herein aft-er fully described.
The invention consists in a pair of rolls, one of which is formed with an annular concavity or depression, while the other roll is formed with a similar depression, which is provided centrally with an annular flange or former.
The invention further consists of a pair of rolls, each being formed with an annular depression, and one of said rolls being provided with a removable flange or former and a removable sleeve.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a longitudinal central section of a pair of rolls embodying my invention. Figs. 2 and 4 illustrate modifications of the same; and Fig. 3 illustrates in perspective the product of my improved rolls.
A represents a lower roll formed with an annular depression, a. Bis the upper roll, formed with a similar depression, b, arranged opposite to the depression of the roll A.
0 represents an annular flange or groove former located centrally within the depression b of the upper roll. I prefer to form this flange or former G of a separate piece of steel, and to form the roll B in two parts, B and B.
'One half of the roll B is reduced in diameter, as shown in Fig. 1, to form a core, D, having the journal (1 integral-therewith, said core being screw-threaded at its outer end.
The portion 13 consists of a sleeve, E, internally threaded at its outer end, 6, to screw upon the core D, and annularly grooved or cut away at its inner end, 6, to aid in forming the depression b. The main portion B of the roll is formed with an annular shoulder, G, against which the former G rests and is clamped by the sleeve B This construction enables the former to be renewed when necessary.
The modifications shown in Figs. 2 and 4 show the former b integral with the roll B, and in Fig. 4 the depressions of the rolls are rectangular in cross-section.
The rolls thus described produce a rod, H, Q
with a continuous longitudinal groove, h, as shown in Fig. 3, and this product may b utilized for a variety of purposes.
I make no claim in this application to the grooved rod as an article of manufacture, as my application filed February 10, 1885, covers said rod.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination, with a roll formed with an annular depression, of a companion roll having a corresponding depression and formed of two sections, and provided with a removable former, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with the roll A, formed with an annular depression, a, of a two-part roll consisting of the shouldered portion 13, formed with a threaded core, a shoulder and an annular depression, and the threaded sleeve 13*, formed at its inner end with an annular groove to complete the depression b, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WILLIAM A. MOOOOL.
