Description

' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAN HOLUB, OF NERO, WISCONSIN.
-ROLLS FOR LONGITUDINALLY SLITTING RAILROAD-RAILS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 260,098, dated June 27, 1882,
Application filed March 20, 1882. (N model.)
much of such aiset of rolls as is necessary to show my invention.
My object is to sever an ordinary steel or iron T-rail into four parts, each part nearly rectangular in form and suitable to be finished with slight rolling into merchantable rectangular bars by means of only two passes through my rolls.
Referring to the letters upon the drawing, A indicates an upper and B a lower roll in a set of two-high rolls; but it is obvious that a set of three-high rolls might be employed. The
roll A is provided with a cutter, a, and the roll B with a corresponding cutter, I). These rolls are also provided with grooves 0, adapted to receive the cap or top of a T-rail. They are also provided with grooves d, adapted to receive the base or flanges of such a T-rail, and are so spaced at e as to accommodate the web or central part of the rail. A T-rail being fed between the ends of the rolls described, which are exactly alike, will have its cap severed.
longitudinally, as indicated by f, and leave a T-shaped angle-bar, as indicated by g.
I provide at the other end of the roll A two cutters, h, and at the other end of the roll B also two cutters, i, with a deep groove, j, between them. 1 thus provide the rolls for receivin g the T-shaped angle-bar, which, when it is fitted between the rolls, with the web in the groove j, will be severed into three nearlyrectangular bars, as indicated at 70' l m. Thus by one heating of a rail and by two passes I am enabled, on account of the peculiar construction of my ro1ls,'to sever it longitudinally into four nearly-rectangular bars, which can very cheaply and readily be finished separately, by means of ordinary rolls provided with suitable rectangular dies, into merchant able bars. These bars will thus be produced with great economy and rapidity, and without any waste of metal. It will be practicable to finish the bars between suitable rolls without any other heating than that employed for severing the rail and producing the approximate shapes of merchantable bars. Fag ends, as well as worn rails, can thus be utilized.
, Having thus described my invention, what lclaim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
The combination of rolls A and B, spaced, as at e, and provided with the grooves c, d, and j and cutters a b and h "i, as specified, whereby at one heating and by two passes four bars can be produced from a T-rail, as set forth.
