Application filed November 23, 1888. Serial No. 291,627. (Nomodeh) To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOSEPH GUEST, of Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rolling Metals; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, refer- IO ence being had to the accompanying drawing,
which forms part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in rolling metals; and it consists in the combination of two rolls provided with a suitablyshaped pass which is adapted to separate the web of a T-rail at a point close to the flange, and at the same time to so bend the flange, the head, and web portion of the rail as to adapt each of the two pieces to be readily 2o rolled by one or more passes through the rolls into any desired form or section, all of which will be more fully described hereinafter.
The object of my invention is to provide a pair of rolls for the reworking of railroad-rails into angle-irons, splice-bars, &c., and which.
both out a rail into two pieces and at the same time change the shape of both pieces preparatory to being passed again through other grooves in the rolls to convert them into an- 0 gle-irons or other sections.
The accompanying drawing represents a side elevation of a pair of rolls which embody my invention.
'A B represent the two rolls, which are pro- 5 vided at one end with the two passes O D, which are separated from each other by the cutting-edges G and R, for separating the rail longitudinally into two parts. The flanged portion 0 of the rail passes through the groove 40 orpass O, and at the same time that this flanged portion is being separated from the head or top of the rail it is given a bend, as shown. This is necessary to permit making the cutting-edge R thick enough to give the strength required for shearing the web of the rail close to the flange. At the same time that the flanged portion of the rail is being bent the head and web portion P is flattened and bent, as shown. This equalizes the draft on the head and web portions of the rail by flowing 5c the metal of the head into and thickening the web at the same time that the web is reduced in width, thus distributing the metal through= out the piece, so as to adapt it to be readily rolled into many merchantable forms, such as angles, splice-bars, curved sections, flats, &c. The principal feature of my invention is in cutting the web close to the flange and bending and distributing the metal in the head and web portions of the rail. This, while greatly 6o facilitating the further rolling of the metal into angle-irons, splice-bars, &c., which may be done in the ordinary grooves used for the purpose, still it will be evident to those skilled in the art that the metal after going through the first pass or grooves O D is in such shape that it may be readily rolled into almost any desired section.
Having thus described my invention, I claim 1. The combination of the two rolls provided with the two grooves C D, which are separated from each other by the cutter G, for separating the rails at the top of the flange, the grooves being so shaped that both the flanged and the head and web portions are changed in shape at the same time that the rail is being divided, substantially as shown.
2. The combination of two rolls provided with the two grooves O D, which are separated from each other by the cutter G, and separate grooves for finishing each one of the two parts of the rail, substantially as described.
