ROLLING-MILL FOR TRAMWAY-RAILS.

To all, whom it may concern;
' Be it known that I, HEINRICH KOEHLER, a subject of the King of Prussia, residing at Bochum, Prussia, German Empire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rolling-Mills for Tramway-Rails; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference mark'ed thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in the construction and arrangement of that class of rolling-mills employed for grooving or channeling the head of railway-rai1s.
The invention consists, essentially, in the combination,with the channeling-roll,of a eylindrical supporting roll for the rail, both driven positively,and 0f guide-rolls applied to opposite sides of the web and foot of the rail between the channeling and supporting rolls.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 shows by a vertical transverse section through the roll-bearings a rolling-mill embodying my improvements, and Fig. 2 is an elevation thereof.
Like letters of reference indicate like parts in the above figures of drawings.
In some of the ro11ing-mills of the class to I which this invention relates, as heretofore constructed, the channeling of the rail-head is effected by a flanged roll projecting into the groove or caliber of the finishingroll, the channeling-roll being rotated by friction. This gives rise to a speedy wear of the channelingroll from undue frietion,also owing to the neoessarily small diameter such a roll must have in order to perform its function properly. In other constructions a vertical driving-roll is employed for channeling the rail-head, and with this roll are combined two horizontal guide-rolls of the caliber of the finishing-rolls, said guide-rolls being usually mounted at the end of the rolls of an ordinary mill'frame. In this case the foot of the rail is supported from flanges formed on the guide-rolls, which arrangement also gives rise to a great amount of friction, while the strain or resistance to the pressure necessary to channel the rail-head is supported on an axial line by the roll-bearings, which is undesirable.
To avoid these difficulties I employ an up per driven channeling-roll, a lower driven cylindrical supporting-roll, and two finishingrolls encompassing the web of therail to prevent its being crushed during the process of channeling,said rolls being rotated by friction. These rolls in themselves constitute a channeling and finishing mill wherein the rougheneddown rails are channeled and finished.
A B and O 0 indicate the four rolls which constitute my improved channeling and finishing mill. In the accompanying drawings I 'have shown the channeling-roll B mounted above the supporting-roll A, and the guide and finishing rollsO on opposite sidesthereof. Although I prefer this arrangement, yet it is obvious that the relative positions of the rolls A B may be reversed, and also that the position of the rolls A B relatively to that of the rolls 0 may also be reversed, without in any manner changing their function.
The rolls A B are mounted, as usual, in boxes E, adjustable by means of set-screws K in the checks of the double standard G. The rolls G,on the contrary, are mounted in boxes or frames F,secured to the standard by means of four or more bolts, f. The trunnions a b of the rolls A B are provided with the usual couplings, and are to be driven inopposite directions.
As shown ,the roll A supports the foot of the rail R, the roll B, provided with the channeling-flange,channels and finishes the rail-head, while the rolls O,encompassing the web of the rail B and projecting between the rolls A B, serve to properly guide the rail on its passage through rollsA B, support the web of the rail R,to prevent its being crushed,and finish said web.
