(Cl. 52-298) This invention relates to a base for securing elongated poles to a supporting road surface. The base of this invention requires no fastening hardware, is essentially self contained when applied to the pole on installation and is essentially tamper-proof, a very important feature in this field. It has been the practice heretofore to provide cumbersome, expensive pole parts for this purpose which were readily subject to tampering. The invention is designed to replace the same with a base of novel features including further, a hand-hole with a door opening on an internal space in the base sufficient for placement of small ballasts, ramming studs, transformers and other accessories which in devices heretofore used for the purpose, necessitated much larger, additionally, formed parts for the purpose.
The drawings, illustrating procedures and devices useful in carrying out the invention, and the description below, are exemplary only of the invention, which shall be deemed to cover all other devices and procedures coming within the scope and purview of the appended claims.

FIG. 6 is a fragmentary vertical sectional view thereof, taken at line 6-6 of FIG. 1.
As shown in the drawings, base 10 of the invention is designed to secure a pole to a supporting road surface such as 11. The base comprises a top plate portion 12 having a marginally depending side wall 13 defining therewith a cup-shaped outline to be positioned in downwardly opening relation (FIGS. 5 and 6) to the supporting road surface 11. The plate portion 12 is provided with a plurality of inwardly offset cup-shaped open-top bolt and nut receiving receptacles 14 which may be, for example, four or any other desired number, the spaced inner ends of which are apertured as at (FIG. 6) and the outer ends of 21 of which (FIG. 6) are preferably shouldered and aligned with the plate portion 12 to receive tamperproof closure plug dis-cs 22 which may be of an outline and may be formed to blend (FIG. 1) with the design of the base and may be marginally flange-d (FIG. 3). They may be formed initially of flexible material of arouate cross section (FIG. 3) and inserted in the shouldered portion 21 and then flattened with a 'blow to their straight (dotted position 22a FIG. 3) fit within the shouldered end 22 of the cup portion 14 of the base at the time of installation, rendering the device essentially tamperproof. The shoulder portion 21 and disc 22 are so proportioned and aligned with the upper surface of the plate 12 that when this is done the disc will essentially blend with the lines of the plate and form a continuous, tamper. proof surface therewith.
In the application of the base to the road surface 11 anchoring means 23 such as bolts anchored in and ex- United States Patent 0 tending upwardly from the road surf-ace 11 are passed through the apertures 20 (FIG. 6 and engaged by the nut members 24. This operation may be readily performed without use of special tools and the device then closed.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A base for securing a pole to a paved surface, comprising,
(a) a hollow upstanding unitary base which is sup ported on a substantially horizontal paved surface;
(b) said base having a substantially horizontal upper top plate section which has a centrally positioned circular opening therein having a depending annular flange to accommodate and support a pole vertically with respect to said paved surface;
(c) a plurality of inwardly recessed open top bolt and nut receptacles in said top plate section which are symmetrically disposed about said circular opening to accommodate vertically upstanding bolts which are fixedly mounted in the paved surface;
(d) said bolt and nut receptacles being disposed about said circular opening in encircling relation thereto to enable the base to be supported equally against all lateral forces exerted thereon;
(e) the bottom wall of said bolt and nut receptables being 'apertured so that the upper threaded section of said upstanding bolts can be passed therethrough;
(f) the depth of said bolt and nut receptacles being sufficient to permit accommodation of said upper threaded section with allowance for variance in height of the upstanding bolt;
(g) the width of said bolt and nut receptacles being sufliciently wide to accommodate a nut and to allow clearance for a wrench;
(h) the upper section of said bolt and nut receptacles having an annular shouldered portion adjacent the open top thereof;
(1) a closure plug which fits across and closes the top of each of said receptacles and has a periphery which tightly engages said annular shouldered portion, said plug having a top surf-ace substantially flush with and having a configuration matching the adjacent top plate section to blend therewith when in place; and
(j) said closure plug having an outwardly bowed flexible center section so that the closure plug may be firmly secured in place by depressing said outwardly bowed section to thereby .press the periphery thereof against the upper section of said receptacle.
2. A base for securing a pole to a paved. surface as set forth in claim 1, wherein:
(a) said base has a side wall with an opening therein for access to the interior of the base; and
(b) a door engaging said side wall in closing relation to said opening.

Claims (1)
1. A BASE FOR SECURING A POLE TO A PAVED SURFACE, COMPRISING, (A) A HOLLOW UPSTANDING UNITARY BASE WHICH IS SUPPORTED ON A SUBSTANTIALLY HORIZONTAL PAVED SURFACE; (B) SAID BASE HAVING A SUBSTANTIALLY HORIZONTAL UPPER TOP PLATE SECTION WHICH HAS A CENTRALLY POSITIONED CIRCULAR OPENING THEREIN HAVING A DEPENDING ANNULAR FLANGE TO ACCOMMODATE AND SUPPORT A POLE VERTICALLY WITH RESPECT TO SAID PAVED SURFACE; (C) A PLURALITY OF INWARDLY RECESSED OPEN TOP BOLT AND NUT RECEPTACLES IN SAID TOP PLATE SECTION WHICH ARE SYMMETRICALLY DISPOSED ABOUT SAID CIRCULAR OPENING TO ACCOMMODATE VERTICALLY UPSTANDING BOLTS WHICH ARE FIXEDLY MOUNTED IN THE PAVED SURFACE; (D) SAID BOLT AND NUT RECEPTACLES BEING DISPOSED ABOUT SAID CIRCULAR OPENING IN ENCIRCLING RELATION THERETO TO ENABLE THE BASE TO BE SUPPORTED EQUALLY AGAINST ALL LATERAL FORCES EXERTED THEREON; (E) THE BOTTOM WALL OF SAID BOLT AND NUT RECEPTACLES BEING APERTURED SO THAT THE UPPER THREADED SECTION OF SAID UPSTANDING BOLTS CAN BE PASSED THERETHROUGH; (F) THE DEPTH OF SAID BOLT AND NUT RECEPTACLES BEING SUFFICIENT TO PERMIT ACCOMMODATING OF SAID UPPER THREADED SECTION WITH ALLOWANCE FOR VARIANCE IN HEIGHT OF THE UPSTANDING BOLT; (G) THE WIDTH OF SAID BOLT AND NUT RECEPTACLES BEING SUFFICIENTLY WIDE TO ACCOMMODATE A NUT AND TO ALLOW CLEARANCE FOR A WRENCH;
