SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 319,775, dated June 9, 1885 I Application filed January 1:2, 1885. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EVERETT H. BARNEY, a citizen oftheUnited States, residing at Springfield, in the county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, have in ented new and useful Improvements in Implements for Manipulating the \Vheel-Fastenings of RollerSkates, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improved implements for securing wheeLf-astenings to and removing them from roller-skate axles, the object being to provide convenient and effective means for operating devices for securing wheels upon axles, such as are describedand shown in my patent dated October 3, 1882.
In the drawings forming part of this specification, Figures 1 and 2 are side elevations of an implement embodying my invention; and Figs. 3 and 4 are perspective views of parts of the same, showing the handles partly broken oif. Fig. 5 is a section on the line 00 m, Fig. 3.
In the drawings, B is the implement embodying generally the form of pliers, but having its jaws aa adapted to the purposes of this invention by forming in one side thereofcurved recesses e e, which, as shown in Fig. 5, are slightly out under at their base, and by having the studs 0 c placed in the sides of the jaws a opposite to those in which said recesses are. The studs 0 project beyond the sides of the jaws, and the sides of the studs next to the opening between the jaws are made somewhat sharp, or of a V shape, as shown. The handles of the tool are indicated by 0,aud are pivoted together at z.
The wheel-fastening above referred to, as shown in said patent, consists of an axle having an annular groove around it near its end, and a split washer is provided capable of fitting into said groove, and of having its separated edges forced together, and its inner circular border at the same time forced into the said groove in the axle, making a rigid circu' lar shoulder outside of the wheel on the axle to hold the wheel on. 111 the drawings, b represents sections of the said axle near the end thereof, and 6 said split washer. In Fig. 3 are shown the positions of the axle, the washer, and the tool in the act of forcing the washer around the axle. The washer e is placed between the jaws a, with its edges in the recesses 6, its split side outward, and then,bcing placed on the axle at its grooved point, the tool is shut, forcing the washer to the position shownin Fig. 3. The aforesaid undercut form of the base of recesses 6 causes the washer to rest more firmly therein when the latter is sprung together on the axle.
To remove the Washer from the axle,the tool is placed on the washer so that the V-shaped edge of one of the studs 0 is in the slight opening at the outer end of the split in the washer and the other stud resting against the opposite edge of the washer, and the jaws a, being then forced together, the washer is sprung open, (as partly shown in Fig. 4,) and may be easily removed from the axle, so that the wheel can be taken off, the stud 0 having been forced between the adjoining ends of the washer,and thereby spreading them sufficiently.
What I claim as my invention is The implement 13, having in its jaws,at one side thereof, the curved recesses e e,and on the opposite side of said jaws the studs 0 0, project-ing beyond the side 'of the latter, each of said studs having a V-shaped edge on the side thereof next to the opening between thejaws, substantially as set forth.
