SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 319,666, dated June 9, 1885.
Application filed March 2, 1885. (No model.)
. turning said rod and as a fastening-point for 5 To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EVERETT H. BARNEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Springfield, in the county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Roller-Skate Fastenings, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in fastenings for roller-skates, the object being to provide, in combination with the pivoted fingerpiece by which the screw-rod of metal clamp fastenings is operated, a cheap and convenient fastening for securing the heel end of the skate to the boot of the wearer.
In the drawings forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a roller-skate having applied thereto heel-fastenings embodying my improvements. Fig. 2
Y is a view of the clamp-operating screw-rod and said fastening devices separate from the skate.
In the drawings, a is the screw-rod extending from the rear of the heel-plate b under the latter and engaging with the pivot-nut c, to which the sole-clamps e e are connected, the latter being operated in the usual way by turning said screw-rod.
At the rear end of the screw-rod a is pivoted the finger-piece d, having the central bar, 0, therein. Said finger piece is adapted to be turned up against the heel when the soleclamps are clamped, but is free to swing laterally on the rod a, and to be swung to a line with the latter, and it serves as means for the ankle-strap h. The said strap h is passed through the finger-piece (1 around its central bar, 0, as shown, and is provided with a suitable buckle or other fastening.
In putting on and fastening the skate the latter is placed against the sole and heel of the boot, the finger-piece and strap are swung rearwardly from the heel-plate, and by seizing the finger-piece the screw-rod is turned and the sole-clamps are operated. This having been accomplished, the finger-piece is turned up against the rear of the heel-plate, and the ends of the heel-strap are carried around the ankle of the skater (thereby holding up said. finger-piece) and buckled together, thereby securely fastening the skate to the heel of the boot.
This construction of a heel-fastening obviates the usual attachment of straps and leather parts to the border '0 of the heel-plate, and
provides a fastening that is simple and effective.
What I claim as my invention is The heel-fastening for roller-skates, consisting of thefinger-piece d, pivoted on the end of the screw-rod a, and the ankle-strap h, attached to said finger-piece, substantially as set forth.
EVERETT H. BARNEY.
