(Cl. 19-406) The present invention relates to a method of connecting fibrous ribbon issuing from a carding machine and broken due to stoppage of the fibre feeding and web delivery means and a guide apparatus according to the method. The method and apparatus according to the invention are particularly useful in connection with fully automatic carding machines.
In fully automatic carding machine the slivers issuing from the machines are not deposited in cans but are continuously deposited on a conveyor placed alongside of the machine or at a right angle thereto, the conveyor delivering the slivers to an apparatus placed at the end of a row of carders, for example a sliver winding apparatus or a drawing frame. Stoppage of the web delivery means and of the means feeding fibres to the carding machine while the carding cylinder continues to operate, as is usually the case, causes severing of the card web. In carding machines where the slivers are deposited in cans in the conventional manner, the broken card web is connected by hand whereby the new web is rolled in the broken end of the previous card web and is conducted through a funnel which is placed below the center of the doifer or dofiing comb. This manual operation is not feasible in a fully automatic carding machine and must be replaced by a fully automatic operation.
It is an object of the invention to provide a method of connecting card web issuing from an automatic carding machine, which web has been broken due to a brief stoppage of the fibre feeding means and of the card web delivery means while the carding cylinder continued to operate. According to the invention a portion of the card web is caused to move on a longer path toward the funnel through which the web is withdrawn, than another portion whereby, after breakage of the web and upon restarting of the fibre feeding and web delivery means, the new web issuing from the dolfer and dofiing comb is allowed to overtake the portion of the first web moving on the longer path and is caused to fold into the first web. The speed at which the first web moves through the funnel is about equal to the speed at which the new web emerges from the carding machine.
It is a further object of the invention to provide a card web guide receiving the card web from the dotfer and dofiing comb of a carding machine and conducting the card web to a funnel or the like for forming a sliver and feeding the latter to the nip of a pair of calender rollers, said guide including asymmetric converging guide portions of different length for conducting the card web along said portions or paths of different lengths and causing folding of the card web as its moves toward the funnel.
With the method and guide means according to the invention dropping of the card web emerging from the doffer, upon starting of the fibre feeding and card web delivery means of the carding machine, is avoided and the card web is conducted toward the calender rollers which are placed at one side of the carding machine, whereby, due to the asymmetric construction of the guide means, the portion of the web emerging from the doffer at the side of the carding machine which side is distant from the calender rollers must travel along a relatively long path and therefore takes more time to reach the I tudinally slit tube.

This affords overtaking of the first portion of a card web which is already on the guide means after a breakage of the card web, by the new card web emerging from the carding machine and folding into and interlacing of the end of the first card web with the end of the new card web.
The novel features which are considered characteristic of the invention are set forth with particularity in the appended claims. The invention itself, however, and additional objects and advantages thereof will best be understood from the following description of an embodiment thereof when read in connection with the accompanying drawing, wherein:
FIG. 1 is a perspective schematic view of a carding machine provided with a card web guide apparatus according to the invention.
FIG. 2 is a schematic enlarged illustration of the card web delivery and guide means shown in FIG. 1, the figure showing a card web, which has been broken due to stoppage of the fibre feeding and web delivery means of the carding machine, and a new card web issuing from the carding machine after restarting the fibre feeding and web delivery means.
FIG. 3 corresponds to FIG. 2 and shows the apparatus a moment later when the new card web catches up with the end of the broken card web.
FIG. 4 shows the apparatus according to the invention after bonding of the new card web to the old card web.
Referring more particularly to FIG. 1 of the drawings, numeral 1 designates a fibre feed shaft feeding fibres to feed rollers 16 of a carding machine provided with a doffer 3 and a conventional dofiing comb 4. A guide 5 for the fibrous ribbon or card web issuing from the dofier and dofiing comb is provided adjacent to and below the doifer 3. This guide is formed by an asymmetric triangular declining guide plate which is mounted on a rod 6 connected to side shields 7 and 8 of the carding machine. Two converging and downwardly extending marginal portions 9 and 10 of the guide plate 5 are bent or rolled upward. One of said marginal portions, which is at the right side of the plate 5 in the drawings, declines to the left and extends almost over the entire width of the carding machine. This marginal portion 10 is preferably at least twice as long as the second (9) of said marginal portions, which extends in about parallel relation to the side shield 7. The lower ends of the converging marginal portions terminate adjacent to a funnel or trumpet 11 which is at one side of the carding machine. The latter causes the fibrous ribbon to form a sliver 13 and directs the sliver into the nip of a pair of calender rollers 12. The sliver 13 leaving the calender rollers 12 is received by an endless continuously moving flexible conveyor element 14 which is in the form of a longi- For receiving the sliver the tube is spread open by a roller 15 which also diverts the sliver onto the element 14.
The delivery speeds of the calender roller pair 12, of the card feed rollers 16, of the doffer 3, and of the doffing comb 4 are coordinated to the speed of the conveyor element 14. No means for effecting this syn-- chronization are shown, because they do not form part of the present invention.
The arrangement according to the invention operates as follows: Upon stoppage of the conveyor 14 the delivery of the dofier 3 and of the feed apparatus 16 must be stopped because there is no accumulating device between the conveyor 14 and the calender rollers 12. The fibre feed apparatus, the doffer 3 and the dofling comb 4 stand still whereas the carding cylinder 17 continues at first, only a useless fibrous ribbon.

1. IN COMBINATION WITH A CARDING MACHINE HAVING A DOFFER, A DOFFING COMB DELIVERING A CARD WEB, AND A TRUMPET RECIEVING THE DELIVERED WEB; A STATIONARY CARD WEB GUIDE MEANS FORMED BY A SUBSTANTIALLY PLANE METAL SHEET HAVING SUBSTANTIALLY THE CONFIGURATION OF A RIGHT-ANGLED TRIANGLE WHOSE ACUTE ANGLED CORNERS ARE CUT OFF, SAID METAL SHEET HAVING A MARGINAL PORTION REPRESENTING THE LONG CATHETUS OF SAID RIGHT-ANGLED TRIANGLE AND BEING LONGITUDINALLY ADJACENT TO SAID DOFFING COMB, SAID METAL SHEET HAVING A SECOND MARGINAL PORTION REPRESENTING THE SHORT CATHETUS OF SAID RIGHT-ANGLED TRIANGLE, SAID SECOND MARGINAL PORTION BEING BENT OUT OF THE PLANE OF SAID METAL SHEET AND EXTENDING BETWEEN ONE END OF SAID DOFFING COMB AND SAID TRUMPET FOR GUIDING ONE LATERAL MARGINAL PORTION OF THE WEB ON A RELATIVELY SHORT PATH TOWARD SAID TRUMPET, SAID METAL SHEET HAVING A THIRD MARGINAL PORTION REPRESENTING THE HYPOTENUSE OF SAID RIGHT-ANGLED TRIANGLE, SAID LAST MENTIONED MARGINAL PORTION BEING BENT OUT OF THE PLANE OF SAID METAL SHEET AND EXTENDING BETWEEN THE OPPOSITE END OF SAID DOFFING COMB AND SAID TRUMPET FOR GUIDING THE OPPOSITE LATERAL MARGINAL PORTION OF THE WEB ON A RELATIVELY LONG PATH TOWARD SAID TRUMPET.
