Description
llmrno STATES CHARLES L. BELLAMY, OF ARLINGTON, NEW JERSEY.
TRACE- FASTEN ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 319,546, dated June 9,1885.
Application filed October 23, 1884.
T0 (ZZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OnARLEsL. BELLAMY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Arlington, in-the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Trace-Fasteners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form apart of this specification.
The object of this invention is to facilitate the process of fastening the trace upon a whiffietree, and to give to the former increased security thereon; and it consists intheimproved trace-fastener constructed substantially as will be hereinafter set forth, and finally embodied in the clauses of the claims.
Referring to-the accompanying drawings, in which like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in each of the figures, Figures 1 and 2 are side elevations of the improved trace-fastener adapted to be secured at the end of a whiffletree, and showing varying methods of attachment to said whiflletree. Fig. 3 isa plan of the same, and Fig. 4 shows a modified form of construction.
In said drawings, a indicates the shank of the fastener, which shank may be either a ferrule, as inFigs. 1 and 3, or a screw, as in Fig. 2. Other modes of fastening may be employed.
b indicates the neck or rounded portion to receive and hold the trace, and c a head for holding the trace upon said neck. Said head is screw-like, and is thus adapted to allow the arrangement of the trace upon the neck or the withdrawal of the same therefrom by gradu' ally turning the fastening end of the trace while moving it longitudinally over the twisted portion and to prevent a straight pull off (No model.)
longitudinally, whether the trace be held vertically or horizontally.
I prefer to form the head as shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3, in which the screw-like head resembles a twisted flange a cross-section of which would show an end close resembling in general outline the ordinary oblong eyein the trace. Said head may. however, be in the form of a spiral, as in Fig. 4, in which case a small perforation may be made in the trace to receive it. Other screw-like or spiral forms of heads may be used; but it is not deemed necessary to illustrate all of the many varia tions that may be made in the construction of the head without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Inasmuch as the scrcw-flange, which may be quite thin, and yet. because of its peculiar shape, possess requisite strength, may pass through the oblong trace-eye without stretching or bending the leather, I am enabled to use a metallic plate, (1, upon the flat side or sides of trace to re-cnforce or increase the wear of the same.
Having thus described the invention, 'what I claim as new is 1. A trace-fastener having aserew-likehead or extremity, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. A trace-fastener consisting of the shank Ct, neck I), and twisted or screwlike flange c, substantially as set forth.
3. In combination, a fastener havingascrewlike head, and a trace with a metallic re-cnforcing plate at the eye thereof.
I11 testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 21st day of October, 1884.
CHARLES L. BELLAMY.
' Witnesses:
OnARLEs H. PELL, FREDK. F. CAMPBELL.
