Y SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 319,487, dated June 9, 1885.
- Application filed March 20, 1885. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern: y
Be it known that I, MAX HERMANN, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Troy, in the county of Rensselaer and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Shirts, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to an improvement in shirts, in which the bosom has a loose or ily edge with a inishingstrip that is distinct from each of the layers of the bosom and of the body of the shirt-front, and laps in iront and in rear of and incloses the outer edge parts of the layers of thebosom.
The objects of my improvement are to produce such a shirt with the bosom neatly and durably finished and attached to the body of the shirt-front at a cheap rate, to avoid having any objectionable folded edge or ledge in and along the rear surface of the y-edge of the edge part smooth and uniform throughout, so as to iit flatly over and upon the contiguous border. portion of the surface of the body of the shirt-front, and wholly formed by theinwardlyextending rear lap of the strip by which the edges of the layers of the bosom are inelosed.`
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a front view of a portion of the front of a shirt that embraces one form of my invention. Fig. 2 is a front view, and Fig. 3 a rear view, of the bosom of the same shirt before being attached to the body ofthe shirt-front. Fig. 4 is a section of a part of the same bosom at the line z .e in Figs. 2 and 3. Fig. 5 is a section at the line y y in Fig. l of a part of the same bosom. secured to the body of the shirt-front. Fig. 6 represents a part of a separate folded strip by which the edges of the layers of the bosom are inclosed.` Figs. 7, 8, 9, and 10indicate sections of the edge part of bosoms having the edge parts of their layers inclosed by a separate folded strip and secured according to my invention to variously-constituted bodies of shirt-fronts.
Similar parts are marked by like letters in the different figures, and the parts are shown disproportioned to better illustrate the con- 5o struction.
A is a layer of fabric, which in Figs. 1, 5, and 9 constitutes the body of the shirt-front, and in Figs. 1 and 5 extends across and covers the back of the bosom. The rear layer, A, of 5 5 the shirt-front in Figs. 7, 8,' and 10 is re-en` forced by a front layer, B, which is secured with the layer A to the bosom. In Fig.-7 only the layer A is extended across the back of the bosom, but the layer B may be likewise 6o extended.
The bosom is to be made in any desired shape, and with any proper number of layers or thicknesses of woven fabric, and eanbe either closed, as shown in Figs. l, 2, and 3, or in two lateral halves or parts with a lengthwise slit between to constitute an open-front bosom inthe well-known manner. The bosom is shown with a front layer, O, and a rearlayer, D, and in Fig. 7 with an intermediate 7o layer, E. In Figs. 8 and 9 alining, F, covers the back of the bosom. v
G is a separate strip, which is folded sub; stantially as shown, and laps around, covers, and incloses the outeredge parts of the layers 7 5 of the bosom proper, and has its rear lap, h, extended farther inward on the back side of the bosom than its forward lap, i, extends inward on the front side. The strip G is rst progressively folded and secured tothe bosoni- Se layers alone by a row or rows of stitches, j, that extend through all the layers of the bosom and through both the rear lap, it, and the folded front lap, t, of the strip.
The bosom having the edges of its layers thus covered and inclosed by the strip G is secured to the body of the shirt-front by an inner row or rows of stitches, k, which do not extend through the front lap, fi, of the strip G, but do extend through the layers of the 9o bosom and body of the shirtfront, and through the rear lap, 7i, of the strip where it extends inward farther than or beyond the inner edge,
Z, of the front lap.
By this improvement the bosom is left with a loose or freely-movable ily-edge which 'is somewhat wider than the front lap, t, of the binding-strip, and has its rear surface dat and lap, h, of that Strip, without any folded edge or ledge in that surface, so that it may t closely against and upon the contiguous border part of the front surface of the body of `the shirtfront.
Some shirts have been heretofore made with the edges of the bosom-layers bound or inclosed by a separate folded strip which lapped or extended inward equal distances on l the front and rear sides of the bosom. In some such shirts the bound bosom was secured to the body of the shirt-front by a row of stitches through and along the outer folded edge 'part of the binding-strip, so that the bosom was left withoutanyiiy-edgc. In some other shirts having a bound bosom with a ily-edge the rear surface of the fly-edge did not consist wholly of the rear lap of the edge-binding strip, and had in and along its inner part an objectionable ledge formed by the folded inner edge of the rear lap of the bosom-binding strip. Such shirts do not have the strip that covers the edges of the bosom-layers lap or extend farther inward on the-rear side of the bosom than on the front side thereof, and do not have the bound bosom attached to the body of the shirt-front by a row of stitches extending through thelayers of the bosom and body of the shirt-front, and the rear lap only 3o of the strip covering the edges of the bosomlayers, and conhequently do not embody the principal distinguishing feature of my invention.
I claim as my invention 35 A shirt having a bosom with a fly-edge and the edges of the bosom-layers inclosed by a separate folded striplapping farther inward on the rear side of the bosom than onits front side and attached to the bosom by a row of iol in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses, 50
this 17th day of March, 1885.
MAX HERMANN.
