Description
S. GUBERMAN July 6, 1965 BRASSIERE Filed May 15. 1963 ATTO RNEY United States Patent 3,12,929 BRASEEERE Sam Gnherman, 161 W. 27th St, Bayonne, NJ. Filed May 15, 1963, Ser. No. 289,6tl4 2 Claims. (61. 128- 889) The object of the invention is to provide a brassiere so constructed that each cup is held by a frame which leads to the normal back bands of a brassiere, special means being provided for transferring the pull of shoulder straps, when employed, to the framing for the cups rather than to the cups themselves, and permitting the cups to have independent movement relatively to the framing. The framing includes, for each cup, an inverted V-shaped yoke having one arm leading downwardly to a midpoint of the appropriate back band and seamed thereto and a second arm leading to a vertical framing member intermediate the cups, the yoke substantially covering, as a flap, an elastic insert leading to the outer margin of the yoke and seamed thereto, the elastic insert carrying the cup.
The invention will be described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
FIG. 1 is a view in elevation of an embodiment of the invention, taken at the front thereof, shoulder straps and back bands being both in the way, and certain dotted lines indicating seams.
FIG. 2 is a view in elevation of the structure shown in FIG. 1, looking at the inner face thereof.
Referring to the drawings, it will be seen from FIG. 1, with reference to FIG. 2, that the brassiere comprises back bands 1, which, as customary, will have at their ends means for mutual attachment (not shown). Seamed to each back band is an inelastic yoke 2, to which may be attached a shoulder strap at 3. The end of the yoke seamed to its appropriate back band need not extend downwardly to the margin of the back band, but as shown in FIG. 1 may extend downwardly a lesser distance. The inner end of each yoke 2 is seamed to an inelastic tape 4, FIG. 2, which serves as a connecting member for the two yokes the latter being identical.
It is preferred that the upper margins of each yoke be reinforced, as by an inelastic tape 5, FIG. 2, the tape extending to the inner vertical tape 4 and being stitched thereto. Also, in the embodiment shown, substantially vertical reinforcing tapes 6 are carried at the inner face of the brassiere and seamed to the inner ends of back 7 erably inelastic, or may be made up in sections as in the embodiment shown. In FIGURE 1 the cups shown consist of an upper section 6, connected by ladder stitching to abutting sections 7, seamed to a reinforcing tape 8. In the embodiment shown, the lower cup sections 7 are inwardly reinforced by applied fabric pieces 9, as shown in FIG. 2. Also, the marginal area of each cup member which comprises either a unitary piece of fabric or the cup sections 6 and 7, may be reinforced by a tape or tapes 10, asshown in FIG. 2.
Between the marginal area of each cup per se and the framing elements comprising the yoke 2, the center tape 4 intermediate the cups and the tape 6 carried by the back bands, there is inserted a generally inverted U- shaped elastic member 11 which is seamed to said framing elements, and which, at the front of the brassiere, is substantially covered by yoke 2. The yoke is connected to elastic insert 11 only at the upper margin thereof, and at the inner edge of the appropriate yoke, so that each yoke,
7 3,192,929 Patented July 6, 1965 in addition to transmitting the pull of its shoulder strap to the framing elements, acts as a covering flap, to the extent of its area, for elastic insert 11, as to each cup. Member 11 may be of any suitable elastic fabric.
Under each cup is an elastic insert 12 and which has preferably elastic extension in the direction of the arrow, FIG. 2, and the hem member at 13 also is elastic in the same direction or directions.
In the action of the brassiere on the body of the wearer, and when shoulder straps are employed, the cups are substantially free from the pull of the straps, the saidpull is transmitted by the yokes to the back band and to the cup connecting vertical tape 4. This action leaves the cups free and independent of each other 'to conform to the breasts, the elasticity of inserts 11 and 12, affording w illustrated in the drawings, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
' Having described my invention, what I claim is as follows:
1. A brassiere having a front and a rear construction including back bands, two cups, and including shoulder straps, and in which each cup is surrounded by an elastic insert, which brassiere consists of two cup members, inverted U-shaped elastic inserts secured at their outer side margins to and surrounding the side and top margins of the cups and joined at the vertical center of the brassiere, back'bands secured to said elastic inserts at their outer side edges, and a yoke member substantially covering each of said elastic inserts, inner ends of said yoke members being secured together between the cups and being free from attachment directly to the cups, upper margins of said yoke member being secured to upper margins of the elastic inserts and outer margins of said yoke members being seamed to the back bands, and shoulder straps connected to the yoke members.
2. A brassiere having a front and a rear construction including back bands, two cups, ,and including shoulder straps, andin which each cup is surrounded by an elastic insert, which brassiere consists of two cup members, inverted U-shaped elastic inserts secured at their outer side margins to and surrounding the cup members except at the base thereof and joined at the vertical center of the brassiere, lowermost elastic inserts one secured to each cup member at its base and extending from side to side of said cup memben one end of each of said last named elastic inserts being secured to the inverted U-shaped elastic inserts, back bands secured to said U-shaped elastic inserts, and a yoke member substantially covering the inner ends of each of said U-shaped elastic inserts, the yoke members being secured together between the cups and secured at their upper margins to upper margins of said U-shaped elastic inserts above the cups, and being free from attachment directly to the cups, and shoulder straps connected to the yoke members.
