Description

SHOULDER SUPPORT FOR BRASSIERES Filed July 13. 1954 25 I i i I INVENTOR. EDWIN W. GLUCKIN WQQK AW.
ATTORNEY United States This invention relates to brassieres. More particularly, the invention deals with a novel method of providing the lift support for garments of this type and kind through the medium of shoulder engaging yieldable yokes, so as to provide a relatively wide exposure of the neck and chest line of the body.
Still more particularly, the invention deals with a support of the character described, employing means for adjusting the support upon the body of the wearer.
The novel features of the invention will be best understood from the following description, when taken together with the accompanying drawing, in which certain embodiments of the invention are disclosed and, in which, the separate parts are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views and, in which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a brassiere made according to my invention, indicating its arrangement upon the body of the wearer, with part of the construction broken away; and
Fig. 2 is a detailed view of the brassiere support on an enlarged scale, with parts of the construction illustrated in perspective.
In Fig. 1 of the drawing, I have shown a brassiere comprising two cups 10, each cup having an upper section 11, 11 and a lower section 12, 12. The sections are joined centrally, as indicated at 13. The central lower portion of the cups of the sections 12, 12 thereof have relatively wide non-extensive bands 14, 14' which overlap and are stitched together in a more or less diamond section, as at 15. Also, at the lower edges of the sections 12, 12 and extending from the bands 14, 14' are elastic or extensible bands 16, 16. The bands 16, 16 extend to the side seams, one only of which is indicated at 17 in Fig. 1 of the drawing.
Extending from the side seams are side bands, one of which is shown at 18, it being understood that the opposed side of the brassiere is of similar construction. Secured to one of the side bands, namely the one which does not appear in Fig. 1 of the drawing, is an elastic strap 19 having a multiple eye coupling tab 20 for engagement with suitable fasteners at the end of the band 18, which is shown. This construction provides an adjustable support around the body of the wearer with the yieldable portions as at 16, 16' and 19.
Secured to the upper contracted ends 21 of the sections 11, 11' are two similar supporting yokes 22, one of which yokes is shown in enlarged detail in Fig. 2 of the drawing. As each yoke is of the same construction, the brief description of one will apply to both. Each yoke has a short non-extensible strap 23 which is fixed to the contracted end 21 of the cup and a long nonextensible end 24 adjustably coupled with a buckle 25 supported in connection with the end of the side band or section 18 by a loop strap 26. This construction provides adjustable support of the yoke for positioning of the brassiere upon the body of the wearer.
Directly joining the two straps 23 and 24 is an elastic yoke strap 27 which is adapted to engage the inner part of the shoulder 28 of the body of the wearer as clearly noted in Fig. 1 of the drawing, the other part of the yoke comprising a loop elastic strap 29, the ends of which join the strap ends 23 and 24 in substantially diamond sections, as noted at 30 in Fig. 2 of the drawing. This attachment disposes the strap 29 angularly upon the ends of the straps 23 and 24. The strap 29 is adapted to enatent 2,752,601 Patented July 3, 1956 gage the outer portion of the shoulder or the upper end of the arm in the manner diagrammatically illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawing. The supporting yokes provide a wide exposure of the neck and part of the shoulders, as well as the chest, as indicated in Fig. 1 of the drawing.
The elastic straps 27 and 29 provide two independently functioning means of the yoke in support of the garment upon the body of the wearer. The straps 29 will yield to arm movement; whereas, the straps 27 will yield to body movement. Yoke-type supports of the character defined will effectively provide the lift support of the brassiere upon the body of the wearer, maintaining the cups 1%), 16) in proper position.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. The combination with a garment, including a body encircling portion and breast enveloping pockets of supporting yokes for lift support of the garment upon the body of the wearer, each yoke comprising non-extensible strap ends, said strap ends being joined by a yieldable yoke, comprising an elastic directly joining the strap ends, an elastic loop extending laterally with respect to the first named strap and joining the non-elastic strap ends in substantially diamond sections, and said elastic and elastic loop of each yoke functioning independently in support of the garment upon the body of the wearer.
2. The combination with a garment, including a body encircling portion and breast enveloping pockets of supporting yokes for lift support of the garment upon the body of the wear, each yoke comprising non-extensible strap ends, said strap ends being joined by a yieldable yoke, comprising an elastic directly joining the strap ends, an elastic loop extending laterally with respect to the first named strap and joining the non-elastic strap ends in substantially diamond sections, said elastic and elastic loop of each yoke functioning independently in support of the garment upon the body of the wearer, and means providing adjustable coupling of one of the non-elastic straps with the garment.
3. The combination with a garment, including a body encircling portion and breast enveloping pockets of supporting yokes for lift support of the garment upon the body of the wearer, each yoke comprising non-extensible strap ends, said strap ends being joined by a yieldable yoke, comprising an elastic directly joining the strap ends, an elastic loop extending laterally with respect to the first named strap and joining the non-elastic strap ends in substantially diamond sections, said elastic and elastic loop of each yoke functioning independently in support of the garment upon the body of the wearer, one of said non-elastic straps being short and fixed to the front portion of the garment, the other non-elastic being long, and means adjustably supporting the long strap with the rear portion of the garment.
4. A shoulder supporting yoke for garments of the character described, comprising two non-elastic straps, defining end portions of the yoke, a yoke section joining the ends of said non-elastic straps, said yoke section comprising an elastic strap extending directly between and joining the strap ends, an offset loop elastic strap having angularly arranged ends secured to said non-elastic strap ends, said elastic strap and loop elastic functioning independently in the use of said yoke sections, and means providing adjustable mounting of one of said non-elastic straps in connection with a garment.
