Description

UNITED, STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH TIBERI, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
FIRE-GRATE.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 31,914, dated April 2, 1861.
To all 'whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH Tinnr, of the city and county of St. Louis and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Open- Grate Fireplaces; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, andexact description of the same, refeience being had to the annexed drawing, making part'of this specification,
in which- I Figure 1 is a front elevation, Fig. 2 a veri tical section on the line A A, and Fig. 3 a partof my invention to be. hereinafter' explained.
The Jfollowing description of my invention will enable any one skilled in the arts to which it appertains to make and 'use the same. f
Similar letters of reference represent corresponding parts of the different figures of the drawing annexed.
In the drawing J represents the chimneyback, and I) a loose fire back, between which and the chimney back there are made a number of fiues E, the said flues being formed by a series of piers I made in the chimney back on the lou` er part of which piers the back D sets, there being projections made on the said piers to receive the said back in the manner shown. The object of the flues E is to obtain a draft on the under sideof the grate basket by which means the ashes will be prevented from flying out in the room when the lire is raked.
The grate or lire basket is represented in the drawing by C. The said fire basket is of the ordinary construction and is arranged .in the ordinary manner.
B is a loose damper, arranged in the throatof the chimney. The lower end of this dainper rests upon two cleatsmone on each side of the chimney-represented by 7 in the drawing. The said cleats have notches made in their upper sides, or faces, into which the lower end of the damper is made to rest, the lower end of the said damper being made with a sharp edge to fit the notches in the cleats aforesaid. On the back of said damper two hooks e e are fixed each of which hooks fit over a pin b set in each side of the chimney throat. This said damper is made adjustable so that the draft of the chimney may be made to pass either in front o f the said damper or behind it.
When the damper is in the position shown in the drawing, the draft is in front thereof and the heat of the fire is concentrated thereunder and radiated into the room; but if the damper be set in the position indicated by the red line the draft will be on both sides thereof, no heat will be concentrated thereunder, and but Very little heat will be radiated into the room, and if the said damper be so arranged as to bring the top thereof against the front ofthe throat of the chimney and the bottom thereof against the back of said chimney, then the whole draft of the chimney will be through the flues E, which will cause a very slow combustion of fuel, and the whole of the heat to be carried up chimney. The said damper is made adjustable, so uthat one damper will fit fines of different widths, thus requiring but one set of patterns to furnish dampers of any width. This construction of damper is shown by Fig. 3. It consists of a center plate B and two side plates H H. The said side plates are made with oblong holes a a a a through which screws or bolts are passed, whereby the said side plates are fixed to the center plate in any desired position. In the front of the said damper and near the lower end thereof a staple or eye CZ is made by which the position of said damper may be regulated by means of the fire poker.`
The construction and arrangement of this damper constitutes the essence of this my invention; and
I-Iaving now fully described the construction and operation of my said invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is-w The arrangement of the said damper in the throat of the chimney in the manner described, for the purpose specified.
. JOSEPH TIBERI.
