IRONING MACHINE Filed Feb. 6, 1964 I 5 Sheets-Sheet 5 lNVE/YTUR. 'Hans BUCHNER United States Patent 6 19 15 Claims. (CI. 38-59) The present invention relates to ironing machines, more particularly of the type comprising an ironing roller cooperating with a heating pad and a guide or feeding board for the introduction of the material to be ironed between said pad and roller.
The invention has for its main object the provision of improved operating and control means to operate said roller to and retract it from its operative or engaged position with the heating pad and to control the rotation of the roller by means of a single electric motor in cooperation with selective coupling means for the roller displacing and rotating mechanisms, respectively.
A more specific object of the invention is to simplify the operation of an ironing machine of the type referred to by the control of substantially all the movements or operations necessary for the carrying out of an ironing operation, including the engagement of the ironing roller with the heating pad, rotation of the roller for the carrying out of an ironing operation, and retraction from said pad both in the operating and rest position of the roller, by the mere change of the direction of rotation of a reversible electric driving motor.
Yet another object of the invention is the provision of improved operating and control mechanism for ironing machines of the type referred to, which is both simple in design and construction, as well as efficient and reliable in operation, to enable its ready and safe use by the average person or operator substantially without the exercise of any special skill or operating experience.
The invention, both as to the foregoing and ancillary objects as well as novel aspects thereof, will be better understood from the following detailed description, taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification and in which:
FIG. 1 is a general perspective view of an ironing machine according to the invention;
FIG. 2 is a perspective view of the drive and operating mechanism embodied in the machine of FIG. 1 and being constructed in accordance with the principles of the invention;
FIG. 3 is a partial perspective sectional View taken on line IIIHI of FIG. 2;
FIG. 4 is a cross-section taken on line IV-IV of FIG. 1;
FIG. 5 is a perspective view of a part of FIG. 2;
FIG. 6 is a longitudinal sectional view of an alternative selective coupling mechanism forming part of the invention;
FIG. 7 is a partial view in developed form of a component of FIG. 6;
FIG. 8 is a partial view in developed form of another component part of FIG. 6; and
FIG. 9 is a wiring diagram of the electrical control circuits of .the ironing machine of the invention.
Like reference numerals denote like parts throughout the different views of the drawings.
With the foregoing objects in view, the invention, according to one aspect thereof, involves the provision, in connection with an ironing machine of the type referred to, of a rotatable or otherwise movably supportedguide or feeding board operable between a normal position and at least one control position, of first drive and operating mechanism including a cam and follower motion-transmitting device, to operate the rotatably supported ironing roller into engagement with and to retract it from the stationary feeding pad, respectively, during alternate half-turns of a full revolution of said device, and second drive and operating mechanism to rotate said roller, for the carrying out of an ironing operation. in order to selectively operate the roller displacing and rotating mechanisms, there is provided by the invention multiple selec* tive coupling means connecting said mechanisms with a reversible driving motor, to operate either mechanism in dependence upon the sense of rotation of said motor. Finally, the invention contemplates the provision of nee: tric circuit and control means for said motor being operably connected with both the feeding board and the ironing roller displacing means, whereby to start the motor in a first direction and to operate the ironing roller into engagement with its heating pad, and to subsequentlly arrest and re-start the motor in the opposite direction, to rotate said roller, by the simple operation of said board from its normal position to and release from its control position, respectively.
In carrying into effect the invention, the pins or the like switch actuating elements for effecting the starting of the motor are preferably controlled by the feeding board, while the switch actuating elements for stopping and reversing the motor are controlled by the ironing roller displacing means, whereby to result in a most simple and eflicient design as well as operation of the control mechanism.
Auxiliary control means may be provided to arrest the motor and, in turn, the iron-ing operation, in the operative position of the ironing roller and to operate the roller displacing means in the rest position of the motor, as described and explained in greater detail in the following in reference to the drawings.
The multiple selective coupling mechanism, responsive to the direction of rotation of the driving motor or input coupling member, respectively, may be of any suitable construction, such in the form of a pair of free-wheeling or scrag-type one-way coupling units having a common input member and a pair of output members, or in the form of a special axially displaceable coupling member driven by the motor through a spiral gear transmission and cooperating with a pair of coaxial output members, as shown by the drawings and described in greater detail hereinafter.
Referring more particularly to FIG. 1, the numeral 1, denotes an ironing or mangling roller being rotatably mounted upon the end of a pair of parallel swiveling arms 2 and 3, said arms having their opposite ends secured to a hollow shaft or tube 5 rotatably mounted upon the frame 4 of the machine, to form a swiveling support for said roller. Further mounted upon the frame 4 and within the housing 6 is the support or casing 7 of the drive mechanism for the roller 1, said housing having in turn affixed thereto a further support 8 carrying a curved heating pad or cradle 9, the latter being equipped in known manner with electrical heating coils (not shown) for cooperation with the ironing roller 1.
Rotatably connected to the support 8 about pins or screws ll, is a guide or feeding board 1e being resiliently urged to a rest or normal position I, FIG. 9, by a spring or the like 12, FIG. 4.
Mounted upon or within the support 8 may be a thermometer 13 and a knob or the like control member 14 for adjusting the ironing temperature, in a manner well known and understood.
Mounted within the housing 6 is a reversible alternating current motor 15, FIG. 2, whose direction of rotation may be controlled by polarity reversal of an auxiliary phase win-ding b, FIG. 9, fed through a capacitor, in a manner as will become further apparent as the description proceeds. Fixedly mounted upon the shaft 16 of the motor is a driving pinion 17 which is in meshing engagement with a toothed collar or externally threaded ring gear 18. Additional reduction gearing (not shown) may be interposed between the pinion 1'7 and gear 13, to reduce the relatively high motor speed to an appropriate speed for the operation of the swiveling arms 2 and 3, to effect engagement and disengagement, respectively, of the roller 1 and pad 9.
The ring gear 18 is coaxial with a shaft 19 mounted in the casing 7 of the drive mechanism, said shaft rotatahly supporting a further pinion 20, on the one hand, and a sleeve 21, on the other hand. Pinion 2% is connected, in the example of FIG. 2, with the roller guide 23, FIG. 3, of a first uni-directional or one-way coupling unit and sleeve 21 is connected with the roller guide 22 of a further one-way coupling unit, said guides being provided in a known manner with wedge-shaped peripheral recesses in which are mounted coupling rollers 25 and 2d, respectively. The guides 22 and 23 and associated coupling rollers are disposed within the gear 18 on the opposite sides of a central spacing disk 26 and retained by covering disks or washers 27 secured to cylindrical extensions on the opposite sides of said gear. The recesses of the guides 22 and 23 are oriented in such a manner that, with the gear 18 rotating in one direction, the rollers 24 are pressed against the inside wall of the gear 13, to effect driving connection with the guide 22, while the rollers 25 are disengaged from the gear 18, and that, with the gearllS rotating in the opposite direction, the rollers 25 effect cou-' pling between the guide 23 and gear 18, while the rollers 24 are disengaged from said gear.
The pinion 20 is in driving connection, by way on intermediate gears 28, 2% with a further gear 31 secured to a shaft whichis rotatably supported within the tube 5, said shaft serving to rotate the ironing roller 1 through a first pulley 32 connected therewith, a second pulley 33 upon said roller and a belt 34 operably connecting said pulleys and being enclosed by the swiveling arm 2, in the example illustrated.
Secured to thesleeve 21 driven by the roller guide 22 is an eccentric 35 which cooperates With a follower roller 3'7 rotatively mounted upon the pivot pin 3'? of a knee lever or knuckle joint 38. The latter comprises a first element in the form of a pair of flat bars 3? and a forked element 40. connected, by means of a screw 41 and nut 42, FIG. 4, to a further forked element 43, a compression spring 44 being interposed between the elements 49 and 43. Element 43 is linked, through a bolt 45, to the lower end of an actuating arm or lever 46 having its upper end fixedly secured to the tube 5. Connected to the support 7 are a pair of supporting piates or brackets 48 provided with longitudinal slots 47 being .slidably engaged'by a bolt 49 connecting the bars 39 and between the bars 3? is a further roller 50 whichcooperates with an eccentric 51 being secured to a shaft 52 trotatively supported by the frame 4. Connected to both ends ofthe shaft 52 are a pair of levers or handlebars 53, FIG; 1, while the shaft is provided with a stop lever 54 arranged to cooperate with a stationary stop or adjusting screw 55 mounted in the housing 6. i v
The knee lever 38 is fitted with a tensionspring 56 arranged with its opposite ends engaging a bore in'the' bracket 48, on the one hand, and a bore in the lever 46, on the other hand, whereby to continuously urge the roller 37 into resilient engagement with'the eccentric 35'.
Rotation of the shaft 5'2 carrying ,the eccentric51- causes displacementof the bolt 49 within the slots 47 for effecting a manual control of the position of roller 1, adjustment of the tension of the biasing: spring 44 being effected by means of the set screw 55, as pointed out lierei'nbefore; Variation of the tension of the spring 44 results in a controlof the operating pressure between the roller 1 and heating pad 9.
Mounted upon the bolt 49' In place of the free-wheeling or wedge and roller type uni-directional clutch units of FIG. 2, connecting the drive pinion 1'7 with the swiveling and rotating mechanism of the roller 1, respectively, any other type of oneway couplings may be utilized for the purpose of the invention, such, for instance, a clutch utilizing a winding and unwinding coil spring connecting a pair of coaxial input and output members, or a direction-responsive selective gear-shift mechanism described in the following and shown by FIG. 6.
Referring to the latter, the numerals 5'7 and 58 represent a pair of set, rings or collars secured to the shaft 19 in spaced relation to one another and between which is disposed the directional gear-shift type coupling or assembly 59. The previously described eccentric 35 is fixedly connected with a coupling sleeve 60 one front surface of which is fitted with coupling teeth 61 or the like. Similarly, one front surface of the hub of the driving gear or pinion 62, also described hereinbefore, is fitted with coupling teeth 63-. Disposed between the coupling sleeve 60 and the hub of the pinion 62 and mounted upon the shaft 19 are a sleeve 64 and a pairof guard plates or-washers 65and 66 at the opposite ends of said sleeve. Rotatably supported by the sleeve 64 and in axially slidable relation theretois a coupling sl eve 69 having a flange 7t). Secured to the coupling sleeve 69 is a spiral gear 71 having a hub 72 wherein are mounted a pair of tap screws 73 secured by means of nuts 74. Gear 71 meshes with a spiral driving pinion '75 being secured to the motor shaft 16 and replacing the gear 1J7 of FIG. 2; Sleeve 69 is furthermore formed at its opposite ends withcoupling teeth 67 and 68, FIG; -7, adapted to cooperate, respectively, with the teeth 61 and63.
The central portions'of the coupling sleeve ,69 and of the sleeve 64 are formed with registering slots 76 and '77, respectively, slot 77 having'an extension forming an angle O FIG. 8, with its main portion registering with the slot '76. The slots 76 and 77 form an angle with the axis of the sleeves 64 and 69 for the purpose as described hereafter. interposed between the; flange of the coupling sleeve 6% and the hub 72 is 'a cup spring 78, tomaintain the sleeve in resilient engagement with the output couing the uide board it) from the normal rest position I to 21 position 111, FIG; 9. As a consequence, the contacts 83 and S4 of the switches 81 and 82 are opened by actuation of the tripping pins '79 anded, while at the same time closing the contacts 85 and 86 of the same switches. In this position, the contacts 85 bridge the contacts 87-of the switch fis which has a contact arm normally heldIin open position by the trippingpin 89 being engaged-by the switch arm 96 secured to and extending from the tube or shaft 5.
Asa consequence, operation of the board'lt) from theposition I to the position IIIresults-in the establishment of a first, electricoperating circuit (A) being traced as follows 2; Terminal P of the alternatingcurrentsourcelead 91--terminal 2lead93contacts 85+terminal' 94 lead 95'-rnotor winding amotor winding .clead 96'-terrninal '97lead 98contacts"86 terminal 99 lead l00+capacitor 11-auxiliary motor. winding clead %-terminal 0 of the current source;
i As a result of the closing of the a circuit ,(A), the' motor 15 is started in one direction, that is, as shown by the 'arrowR,%FlG. 2, wherebyto cause the pinion 17 to rotate the ring gear 18 in the direction of the arrow D. As a consequence, the rollers 24 effect driving connection between the gear 18 and the sleeve 21 by way of the roller guide 22, whereby to rotate the eccentric 35 in the direction of the arrow D. The eccentric 35 cooperating with the roller 37 of the knee lever 38 causes the ironing roller 1 supported by the swiveling arms 2 and 3 to be operated towards and into engagement with the pad 9, the knee lever 38 being operated during this movement from a normally angular to a stretched position against the action of the spring 56. As a consequence, the switch arm 9% is disengaged from the tripping pin 89 at the beginning of the swiveling movement of the roller 1, whereby to close the contacts 87. The feeding board 10 is then released and returned to its normal position I by the action of the spring 12, whereby to re-close the contacts 83 and 84. As a consequence, there is established an intermediate operating or holding circuit (B) being traced as follows: Terminal P of the current sourcelead 91contacts 37- lead 102terminal 103-contacts 104-lead 105-terminal 106-motor winding amotor winding c-lead 96terminal 107-lead 108contacts 109 of switch 110-1ead 111--contacts 84 of switch 821ead 1tl0 capacitor 101auxiliary motor winding b-motor winding c-lead 96-terminal O of the current source.
During continued rotation of the arms 2 and 3 and switch arm 90, actuation of the tripping pins 112 and 113 of the switches 114 and 114 cause the circuit (B) to be interrupted and the motor 16 to be stopped temporarily. After the roller 1 has reached its final operating position of engagement with the pad 9, contacts 115 and 116 of the switches 110 and 114 are closed, whereby to reverse the polarity of one phase winding of the motor and to restart the same in the opposite direction, that is, as shown by the arrow V in FIG. 2, by the establishment of a reverse operating circuit (C) being traced as follows: Terminal P of the current source-lead 91contacts 87- lead 1tl2contacts 116lead 117contacts 83-lead 95-terminal 118-lead 119-contacts 115terrninal 120lead llL-contacts 84-lead Mitt-capacitor 101- auxiliary winding bwinding c-lead 96-terminal O of the current source.
Upon re-starting of the motor in the reverse direction, the pinion 17 upon the motor shaft 16 drives the gear 18 in the direction indicated by the arrow E. As a consequence, the rollers 25 effect driving connection between the gear 18 and the roller guide 23 connected with the pinion 20, while the rollers 24 are disengaged from the gear 18. Pinion 20, in turn, causes rotation of the shaft 30 by way of the intermediate gears 28, 29 and 31. R- tation of shaft 3% is transmitted to the ironing roller 1 by means of the pulleys 32, 33 and belt 31. The machine is now ready for operation by inserting of goods or sheets to be ironed between the roller 1 and pad 9 with the aid of the guide or feeding board 10.
The roller 1 may be stopped temporarily, or the ironing operation interrupted by opening the circuit (C), by depressing the board to an intermediate position II and opening of the switch contacts 83. Upon release of the board 10, the spring 12 will return the same to the normal position I, whereby to re-close the contacts 83 and to re-start the motor and roller 1.
In order to return the ironing roller from its operative or engaged position with the pad 9 to its inoperative or retracted position, the board 10 is operated to the position III, whereby at first to open the contacts 83 and to arrest the motor and to subsequently close the contacts 35 and 86 and to re-start the motor in the direction of the arrow R by the closing of operating circuit (A). As a some quence, the pinion 17 drives the gear 18 in the direction of the arrow D and the rollers 24 effect driving connection between the guide 22 and the gear 13. At the same time, the driving connection between the guide 23 and gear 18 is interrupted by disengagement of the rollers 25, in a manner well known in connection with sprag or 5 wedge and roller type unidirectional clutches of this type. After the eccentric 35 has completed one half turn to release the knee lever 38 from the influence of the spring 56, the switch arm actuates the tripping pin 89 of the switch 83, thus interrupting the current supply and eifecting stoppage of the motor 15 by the opening of contacts In the following will be described the operation of the selective directional coupling 59 of FIG. 6 which may replace the free-wheeling uni-directional clutch mechanism of FIG. 2.
In the starting position of the machine, that is, with the pad 9 being disengaged from the ironing roller 1, operation of the roller to its operative position or engagement with the pad is again initiated by operating the board 1t) from its normal position I to its position III, to start rotation of the motor in the direction of the arrow R, FIG. 6, in the manner described hereinbefore. As a consequence, the spiral pinion 75 upon the motor shaft 16 drives the spiral gear 71 and coupling sleeve 69. By virtue of the action of the spiral gear teeth, the gear 71 and coupling sleeve 69 are displaced axially (arrow F) until the coupling teeth 61 engage the teeth 67, to establish driving connection with the sleeve 60 and, in turn, with the eccentric 35. The extent of the axial displacement of the sleeve 69 and gear 71 is limited by the pins or screws 73 engaging the slots 76 and 77.
As a consequence, the eccentric 35 cooperating with the roller 3'7 at the pivot point of the knee lever 38, FIG. 2, causes the swiveling arms 2 and 3 and, in turn, the roller 1 to be operated into engagement with the pad 9 by operation of the knee lever 38 from its bent to its stretched position against the action of the spring 56, in substantially the same manner as described hereinbefore in reference to FIG. 2. Upon reaching the operative position of the roller 1, the motor is at first disconnected and restarted in the opposite direction (arrow V) by the operation of the swtiches and 114, whereby to rotate and displace the gear 71 axially in the direction of the arrow G due to the action of the spiral gear teeth and to effect engagement between the coupling teeth or sprockets 68 and 63, being oriented in a direction opposite to the coupling teeth 61, 67, or driving connection between the sleeve 69 and pinion 62, respectively. This, in turn, results in the rotation of the roller 1 by way of gears 28, 29, 31, shaft 30, pulley 32, belt 34 and pulley 33, in substantially the same manner as described and understood from the foregoing. Temporary stoppage of the ironing roller in the operative position and return to its inoperative position may again be effected by the operation of the board It) to positions II and 111, respectively, in the manner described in reference to FIG. 2.
During rotation of the eccentric 35, its contact with the follower 37 is maintained by the spring 56, whereby the knee lever assumes an angular position after rotation of the eccentric through an angle of or the distance between the axis 19 from the bolt 36 is at a minimum. During this operation of the eccentric, the swiveling arms 2 and 3 are rotated by the spring 56 such as to disengage the roller 1 from the pad 9. During the retraction of the roller, the eccentric 35 is under the influence of the spring 55 and is subject to a torque causing an advance of the eccentric and, in turn, a non-uniform swiveling movement of the arms 2 and 3 and the roller 1.
The screws 73 act to limit the rotation of the eccentric 35 by engaging the slots 76 and 77 being arranged at such an angle so as to provide a controlling or counter force or breaking action on the movement of the eccentric. This function is assisted by the spring 78 interposed between the flange 7 0 and hub 72.
After the eccentric 35 has completed a half turn, the roller 1 reaches its inoperative position, whereupon the switch arm 90 actuates the tripping pins 89 of the switch 88, whereby to open the contacts 87 and to stop the machine in the manner described.
