For purpose of illustration, I have shown the present invention embodied in an ironing machine of the "table top" type, comprising a tablelike supporting structure In, which is preferably formed of sheet metal, and on which is mounted a suitable housing indicated generally at H, for enclosing the driving mechanism. Associated with and supported by said housing is a horizontally extending rotatable roll l2, and mounted rearwardly of the roll and extending substantially the length thereof is a shoe I4 which is adapted to be mechanically moved into and out of cooperating relation with said roll by means to be hereinafter described. It is to be understood that the shoe which includes a conventional sole plate l5, may be heated in any suitable manner, such as electrically or by gas. The roll l2 may be driven in any suitable manner and as herein shown, a motor 25 is supported below the top of the table support l0 and may be understood to be operably associated with a suit,- able worm gear reduction unit, which is arranged to drive a vertically disposed shaft 21, which projects upwardly through a tubular standard 28, which is rigidly attached by means of screws 29 to a horizontally extending wall 30, which is formed as an integral part of the interior of the housing II. The upper portion of said shaft 21 is rigidly connected by a key 32 to a clutch member 33 having a tubular depending portion iournaled in a bearing 34 mounted in the upper end of said tubular support 28, as seen in Fig. 2. The

The clutch for driving the roll 12, does not constitute any part of the present invention and, therefore, is not illustrated or described. It is to be understood that it may be one of several types of clutch units as now embodied in the various commercial ironing machines that are being marketed. The lower portion of the worm shaft 36, together with the upper portion of the shaft 21, are journaled in a tubular drive element 43, the upper portion of which is journaled in a bearing 44 in the upper portion of the housing H. The lower end of the tubular drive member 43 abuts against the upper end of clutch member 33, and the lower portion of the drive member is formed with a plurality of circumferentially spaced-apart splines 46, on which is slidably mounted a clutch member 48 having jaws 48 adapted to cooperatively engage with the jaws 33 of the clutch member 33. It is by virtue of this clutch, the operation of which will hereinafter be described, that the shoe i4 is adapted, upon operation of a manual control, for first moving into cooperative engagement with the roll l2, and upon the next successive operation of the control element to be backed away from the roll 52 to a position coincident with that indicated in Fig. 5.
Rigidly mounted on the tubular drive element 83, above the clutch element 48, by means of a key 50 is an eccentric 5i, surrounded by an eccentric strap 52, which, as seen in the drawings, is disposed in a substantially horizontal plane. The outer end of the strap 52 is pivotally connected, by a pair of transversely spaced-apart links '53, to a trunnion element 55, having a de-,
pending portion 55 journaled and secured in the upper end of an upwardly extending driving arm' El, which is loosely mounted adjacent the end of the portion of the rock shaft 26 which extends into the housing H. Immediately adjacent arm 5? is a yoke arm 58 rigidly secured to the shaft by a pin 59. Said yoke arm includes a pair of axially spaced-apart walls 68 which provide the journal support for said arm on the rock shaft 2i. Loosely mounted on the rock shaft intermediate said walls 60 of the arm 58 is an upstanding lever arm 62 in which is adjustably threaded a bolt 64, one portion of which extends freely through a slot 65 formed in the upper portion of the back wall of the yoke arm 58. A pre-loaded compression spring 61 is mounted on said rearwardly extending portion of the bolt and reacts against the outer surface of the back wall of the yoke arm 58, and against the underside of the nut 68, which is fixedly mounted on the extreme end of said bolt. The
opposite end of the bolt extends into a cavity 10 formed in the adjacent end of a horizontally and protrudes through the front wall of the housing H, and is provided with a finger-piece or knob 13 for convenient actuation. Said member II is capable of axial and rotative movement and is normally retained in the position seen in Fig. 2 by means of a coil spring 15, reacting between the bracket I2 and a pin 16 extending through said member interiorly of the front wall of the housing ll.

By virtue of this arrangement, the bolt, together with the lever arms 58 and 62, are free for movement as a unit, with the rock shaft 2|, independently of axial movement of the member ll. Said connection of the bolt 64 and member ll by means of the transversely extending pin it permit varying the pressure or spring 61 which, in turn, varies the effective pressure of the shoe M, against the roll 12, as will be hereinafter described. Mounted in the upper portion of the driving arm 51 is a horizontally extending pin ti on which is pivotally mounted a latch member 82, having a hook portion 83 adapted to l engage the upper edge of the loose arm 62 which carries the bolt 64, for latching said arms 51, 58, and 62 together as a unit.

constituting two diametrically opposite cam surfaces 85% which terminatein two oppositely arranged depending stops 8'! for arresting rotation of the clutch element 48 when same is disengaged from the clutch element 33. Cooperating with the cam surfaces 85 is a horizontally disposed pin it which is mounted in an opening 89 formed in a boss i l protruding inwardly from the inner surface of the removable end wall I! of housing ii. The outer end of the pin 88 is formed with a cavity 9ll in which is pocketed a coil spring bl reacting against the outer wall of the housing portion li for urging the pin inwardly into position for engagement with either of the cam surfaces t5 ot'the cam 85. Mounted below the pin it in the opening 89 is a block 93 which is urged in an upwardly direction by a coil spring 94 acting through the detent 95, which engages in a notch 96 formed in the block 93 and which serves to maintain the inner end of the pin Ed in yielding engagement with either the cam surfaces 85*. It will now be apparent that each time the fingerpiece I02 is depressed, rocking the shaft b9, the eccentric 5| is rotated one-hall revolution and which, through the lever arms 5i, latch ti, and the lever arms 58 and 62, which are connected by the bolt (it, causes rocking oi the melt shaft 2 I, for moving the shoe into and out of cooperating engagement of the roll.
Because of the arrangement of the lever arms and their connection to the eccentric, it will be apparent that additional means will be'required be for insuring return movement oi the shoe away from the roll, and for this purpose Iprovide a tension spring W5, which is connected to lever 58 and the interior of the housing ii. The pressure of the coil spring Bl is rendered ineffective all during the rearward movement of the levers iii and 62 by the action of the-eccentric, so as to permit rearward movement of the yolre arm M by the spring 105, for rocking the shaft ii, and
arm 19, rearwardly to back the shoe it away W from the roll. To limit such rearward movement, the interior of the housing ii is provided with an inclined stop surface H, which is adapted tolbe engaged by the outer end of the bolt 64 for arresting the rearward movement of j the arm l9 and the shoe ii.
To insure positive movement of the shoe away fromthe roll in the event of an emergency, such as when the electrical current supply circuit is suddenly broken, the operator merely needs to push the" control knob l3 inwardly, as seen in Fig. 5; by virtue of which movement the inner end of the member ll will be caused toehgage the depending leg 82 of the latch member Bi and swing the latch about its pivot, as seen in Fig. .5, for disengaging its connection with the lever 62 and which, due to the pro-loaded condition of the spring 61, instantly releases the levers so that spring I 05 becomes free to act on the lever 58 for rocking the shaft and swinging the arm IS with the shoe rearwardly to the position seen in Fig. 5. After such operation of the control member ll, said member is returned to normal position by the spring I5 and it will be manlfest that upon ice-establishment oi the electric circuit and the next successive actuation of the finger-piece I02, the eccentric will be caused to move to a position so that the latch member 8i.

For thispurpose l have provided a convenient arrangement which merely requires the rotation of the knob 13 in one direction or the other which, through the member ll, causes rotation of the bolt 84 by reason of the inter-connection of the pin 18 in the slots 19 so that the bolt is caused to rotate for either increasing or decreasing the tension on the coil spring 61.
It will now be observed that by virtue of the construction constituting the present invention, all operating controls for the machine are conveniently located in a group so as to be readily accessible by one hand of the operator, without any appreciable bodily movement from the position normally occupied in performing ironing operations on the machine. The location of the emergency release adjacent the other controls for both the shoe and the roll of the ironing machine deflnitely eliminates all possibility of injury to the operator, in operating the release, as
well as obviates any danger of valuable pieces of fabric that are being ironed from becoming damaged in the event that the ironing machine is suddenly rendered inoperative, such as by breaking of the current supply circuit.
Although I have shown and described a preferred embodiment of my invention, manifestly it is capable of modification and rearrangement of parts without departing from the spirit and scope thereof, and it is to be understood that the particular type and. arrangement of driving mechanism for the rolls and shoe, herein dis-,
. tuating said roll and moving the shoe toward and away from the roll, and a housing enclosing said power driven means; of a rock shaft extending in a direction parallel to said roll and having one end extending into and having journaled shaft and having its upper end directly connected to said shoe for supporting and moving it into and out of engagement with the roll, upon rocking of said shaft, detachable driving connections insaid housing, between said power driven means and the rock shaft and, manually operable means for releasing said driving connections for enabling the rock shaft and arm to move the shoe out of engagement with the roll, said detachable driving connections including means rendered operable upon subsequent operation of the power driven means for re-establishing operating connections to the rock shaft.

4. In an ironing machine, the combination with a rotatable roll,- a shoe movable into and out of cooperative engagement with the roll, manually controlled power driven means for actuating said roll and moving the shoe toward and away from the roll, and a housing enclosing said power driven means; of a rock shaft extending in a direction parallel to said roll and having one end extending into and having iournaled support in said housing, an upwardly extending arm rigidly mounted on the other end of said shaft and having its upper end directly connected to said shoe for supporting and moving it into and out of engagement with the roll, upon rocking of said shaft, intermittently operated driving connections in said housing, between said power driven means and the rock shaft, for controlling the movement of the shoe into and outof engagement with the roll, spring means acting on the rock shaft and adapted when said shaft moves the shoe into engagement with the roll for exerting substantial yielding pressure of the shoe against the roll, and manually operable emergency release means, having an operating portion exteriorly of the housing, for releasing said driving connections for enabling the rock shaft and arm to move the shoe out of engagement with the the cooperative engagement with the roll, manually controlled power driven means for actuating said roll and moving the shoe toward and away from the roll, and a housing enclosing said power driven means; of a rock shaft extending in a direction parallel to said roll and having one end extending into and having journaled support in the shoe into engagement with the roll for exerting substantial yielding pressure of the shoe against the roll, manually operable emergency release means having an operating portion exteriorly of the'housing, for releasing saidv driving connections, said manually operable emergency release means having interconnections with said spring means for adjustment with respect to each other for varying the pressure of the shoe against the roll, and spring means acting on said roclr shaft, adapted upon release of the driving con- 7 nections, for causing rocking of said shaft rearwardly for moving the shoe out of engagement with the roll.

In an ironing machine, the combination with a rotatable roll, a shoe movable into and out of cooperative engagement withthe roll, manually controlled power driven means for actuating said roll and moving the shoe toward and away from the roll, and a housing enclosing said power driven'means; of a rock shaft extending in a directlon parallel to said roll and having one end entendlng into and having journaled support in said housin an. upwardly extending arm rigidly mounted on the other end of said shaft and having its upper end directly connected to said shoe for supporting and moving it into and out of engagement with the roll, upon rocking of said shaft, intermittently operated driving connec- V tlons in said housing, between said power driven means and. the rock shaft, for controlling the movement of the shoe into and out of enga ement with the roll, spring means acting on the roolr. shaft and adapted when said shaft moves the shoe into engagement with the roll for exertsubstantial yielding pressure of the shoe against the roll, manuallyoperable emergency release means, having an operating portion exte- .riorly of the housing; for releasing said drivlug connections, said manually operable emer gency release means having interconnections with said spring means'for adjustment withrespect to each other for varying the pressure of the shoe against the roll, spring means acting on said rock shaft, adapted upon release of the driving connections, for causing rocking of said shaft rearvmndly and moving the shoe out of engagement with the roll, andstop means for limiting said rearward movement ofthe rock shaft and thereby limiting rearward movement of the shoe.

In an ironing machine, the combination with a rotatable roll, a shoe movable into and out of cooperative engagement with the roll, power driven means for actuating said roll and shoe, and a housing enclosing said power driven means; of a rock shaft extending in a direction parallel to said roll and having one end extending into and having journaled support in said housing, an upwardly extending arm rigidly mounted on the other end of said shaft and having its upper end directly connected to said shoe for supporting and moving it into and out of engagement with the roll, upon rocking of said shaft, detachable driving connections, in said housing, between said power driven means and the melt shaft, said connections including a driving arm rigidly mounted on the roclr shaft, an upstanding arm loose on the shaft and having a portion disposed in overlapping relation to said driving arm, a bolt threaded in said last mentioned arm and projecting through an opening in the driving arm, a pre-loadedcoil spring on the bolt acting on the'driving arm, a lever arm positively connected to the driving means and loose- 1y mounted on the rock shaft adjacent the two last mentioned arms, means for latching the two loose arms, together whereby "actuation of the driving means moves the shoe toward the roll and said pro-loaded spring yieldingly presses said shoe against the roll, and manually operable means for. disengaging the latch means for enabling the shoe to be moved away from the roll.
9. In an ironing machine, the combination with Y a rotatable roll, a shoe movable into and out of and a housing enclosing said power driven means;
of a melt shaft extending in a direction parallel to said rolland having one end extending into and having journaled support in said housing, an upwardly extending arm' rigidly mounted on the other model said shaft and having its upper end directly connected to said shoe for supporting and moving it into and out of engagement with the roll, upon rocking of said shaft, detachable driving connections, in said housing, between said power driven means and the rock shaft, said u connections including a driving arm rigidly mounted on the rock shaft, an upstanding arm loose on the shaft and having a portion disposed in overlapping relation to said driving arm, a bolt threaded in said last mentioned arm and'projecting through an opening in the driving arm, a pre-loaded coil spring on the bolt acting on the driving arm, a lever arm positively connected to the driving means and loosely mounted on the rock shaft adJacent the two last mentioned arms, means for latching the two loose arms together whereby actuation of the driving means moves the shoe toward the roll and said pre-loaded spring yieldingly presses said shoe against the roll, and manually operable means for disengaging the latch means-for enabling the shoe to be moved away from the roll, said latch disengaging means and bolt being interconnected, whereby to cause rotation of the latter by the former for varying the pressure of said pre-loaded spring.
10. In an ironing machine, the combination with a rotatable roll, a shoe movable into and out of cooperative engagement with the roll, power driven .means for actuating said roll and shoe, and a housing enclosing said power driven means; of a rock shait extending in a direction parallel to said roll and having one end extending into and having journaled support in said housing, van upwardly extending arm rigidly mounted on the other end of said shaft and havin its ujpper end directly connected to said shoe for and moving it into and out of engagemept with the roll, upon rocking of said shaft, detachable driving connections, in. said housing, between said power driven means and the roe; shait, said connections including a driving armrigidly mounted on the rock shaft, an upstanding arm loose on the shaft and having a portion disposed in overlapping relation to said driving arm, a bolt threaded in said last men- 'tioned arm and projecting through an opening in the driving arm, a pre-loaded coil spring on the bolt acting on the driving arm, a lever arm positively connected to the driving means and loosely mounted on'the rock shaft adjacent the two lastmentioned arms, means for latching the two loose arms together whereby actuation of the driving means moves the shoe toward the roll and said pre-loaded spring yieldingly presses said shoe against the roll, manually operable means 'i'or disengaging the latch means for enabling the shoe to. be moved away from the roll, and separate spring means, adapted upon disengagement of the driving connections. for rocking said shaft in a rearward direction, and simultaneously moving the shoe out of engagement with the roll.
