To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ARTHUR A. FULLER,

Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Book-Holders; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

Ihis invention has relation to holders for dictionaries and other books of large size; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of devices, as hereinafter set forth, and pointed out in the appended claims.

In the accompanying drawings, the letter A designates the stem, the upper portion of which is bored, as at b, to receive the slide B, upon the upper end of which is pivoted a bearing, E, to which the lower leaf of the hinge O is secured by screws.

Around the upper end of the stem A is placed the ring I), which is formed with a th readedperforation, d, which engages athumbscrew, a, adapted to pass through a perforation, b, in the stem, to engage the slide B, and serving, to hold the latter in position after it has been adjusted to the height desired. A chain, c, connects the ring D to the slide B, and serves to limit the upward movement of the latter, preventing it from being casually drawn out of its socket-way in said stem. The leaf 6 of the hinge 0, being secured to the top of the block-bearing E, rests on the upper end of the slide B. The book-holder 'is therefore supported on the slide by the hinge-leaf.

In order to prevent the block E from being casually removed from the slide, the bearing in said block through which the slide passes is enlarged at f, and a pin, g, is passed through the upper end of the stem in such a manner that its ends shall project into the annular enlargement, the pin being removed when it-is desired to rotate the block. WVhen the hingeleaf 6 is screwed to the block E, the enlargement f and the pin therein arecovered securely.

To the side of the rotary block E, are secured the short parallel bars F and G, which are provided with a clamp-screw, h, adapted when turned up to draw said bars into closer relation, whereby their frictional engagement with the metallic slide H is increased, said frictional engagement being rendered less by loosening the clamp-screw. k indicates a rearward extension of one of these bars, or a stop, which is designed to limit the angular rise of the book-holder K, which is secured to I the upper leaf, 6, of the hinge G.

The book-holder K consists of a center board or base, L, havingend pieces orflanges,

m, to which are pivoted .the sides, consisting against the flat edges of the center board, will hold the sides up or in closed position against the sides of the dictionary or such other large book as may be in the holder. The outer portions, 19', of the slat-springs are designed to extend beyond the side bars, I, and to engage the cover-leaves of the back with a yielding pressure. \Vhen the book is thrown open, the pivoted sides of the holder are thrown outward and downward, and in this posit-ion the inner ends of the slat-springs engage the under surface of the center board.

To the outer faces of the end flanges or trans verse end boards, on, are secured the rectangular stops V, the ends of which are engaged by the arms N of the holder when turned up in closed position. When turned downward in open position, these arms N are engaged by the lower faces of the stops V, so that the position of the sides when open is level with the center board. The pivots Z, whereby the by means of these devices, the sides may be fastened in closed or open position. The metallic slide H is pivoted to a bearing on the 1 bottom of the book-holder K, and, by its frictional engagement with the clamped bars F and G, it serves to hold the part K or book-holder in the angular position to which it has been adjusted.

To the lower end of the stem A is secured a plate, J, having marginal flange-sections 70, between which are intervals 9, arranged as four equidistant points for the reception of the nicks h of the heads A of the four legs B. If a greater number of legs is designed to be used, the flange-sections should correspond in number. The heads A of the legs are flat and have lateral shoulders s, which engage the inner sides of the fiange-sectionscn each side of the intervals 9. These heads are some what angular in their shape, their inner ends extending toward the center of the plateJ and being engaged by an under clampingplate, I, which is secured to the lower end of the stem by a clamp-screw, 2. When the plate I is Y loosened, the legs may be readily removed.

I am aware that it is not new to provide a book-support with a hinged and verticallyadjustable holder, and that such holders have been provided with means for changing the angular position of the holder, and therefore do not claim such devices, broadly.

. Having described this invention, what I claim,,and desire to secure by Letters Patent,

1. The book-holder K, consisting of the base or center board, L, thelateral arms N, pivoted to the center board, and the longitudinal bars P, thereto attached, the slat-springs S, secured to said longitudinal bars and engaging the edge portions of the center board, and the rectangular end stops, V,substantially as specified.

\ 2. The combination, with the end flanges of the holder K and the pivoted sides of said holder having slat-springs, of the frictional devices in connection with the pivots of said sides, and the regulating thumb-nuts 12, substantially as specified.

3. The combination, with the center board, L, of the pivoted sides of the holder K, having slat-springs adapted to engage the rectangular edge portions of said center board,- substantially as specified.

4. The slat-springs S, secured to the sides of 6 5 the book-holder K, and projecting at their outer portions, 19, substantially as specified.

5. The combination, with the stem A, of the slide B and the pivoted block-bearing E, perforated to receive the upper end of said slide, and having the bearing formed by the lower leaf of the hinge-connection O, substantially as specified.

6. The combination, with the slide B and the holder K, of the block-bearing E, rotating on said slide, the hinge G, the ring D, having a thumb-screw, and the chain c, substantially as specified.
