UNITED STATES ARTHUR A. FULLER, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND, ASSIGNOR TO HOMER MERRIAM, OF SPRINGFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS.
BOOK-SUPPORT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 319,899,'dated June 9, 1885.
Application filed July 1!), 1884. (No model.)
.To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ARTHUR A. FULLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented-certain new and useful Improvements in Book-Supports; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and .use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of this invention, and shows the upper part in vertical section. Fig. 2 is a side view of the support folded. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section taken on the broken line as a: in Fig. 1.
This invention has relation to folding booksupports of light and portable character; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of devices, as hereinafter set forth, and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A designates the arm, on which the holderB rests, said arm having a slide-clamp, 0, adapted to engage the base of the holder, and secured by means of a thumb-screw, a. The arm Aconsists of an inner section, D, which is, by means of the hinge E, connected to a rotary headblock, F, and an outer section, G, to which the clamp G is connected, and which is pivoted to the inner section, as shown. The barrel portion of the hinge E projects beyond the side of the head-block F, so that when the arm G is extended it can be turned over in position to hang down alongside the stem of the support. The stem portion of the support consists of two flat sections, H and I, which are connected by slide-straps b, and are held in relative position after adjustment by a rack, 0, consisting of transverse pins in a central longitudinal slot of the upper sect-ion, I, and a spring-arm, d, attached to the lower section, H. The upper end of the sliding or rack section I is provided with an enlargement or bearing, J, on the top of which is the washer 0, through which passes the pivot-screw g of manner that its plane of movement is parallel to that of the face h. Itis therefore always in contact with said face, and is braced thereby.
To the other side of the face h is secured a.
stop, Z, which is preferably a nut, n, capable of adjustment, so that it can be turned to receive the bearing edge m of the leg-bar N squarely when said leg-bar is turned outward obliquely in supporting position.
Then it is desired to fold the stand, the arm A is turned in pendent position,- the upper stem-section, I, is pressed downward alongside the lower section, H, and the leg-bars N are turned upward alongside the stem. The stand is thus readily folded in small compass, and may be easily carried or packed for transportation.
I am aware that it is not new to provide two sliding stem-sections for supporting a rack, and that racks for holding music have been composed of a series of pivoted bars and the whole hinged to the upper end of a stem, and therefore do not claim such devices, but,
Having described this invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
1. In a book-support, the holder-arm A, consisting of the inner section, D, hinged to the head-block F of the stand, and the outer section, G, pivoted to said inner section and carrying the slide-clamp, whereby the holder is attached to the arm, substantially as specified.
. 2. The combination, with the upper stem section or support, of the washer e, pivot-screw g, head-block F, hinge E, having its barrel portion projecting beyond the side of said head-block, and the flat arm connected by said hinge to said head block, whereby the said broadly;
arm may hang in folded position alongside said In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in IO item section or support, substantially as speci presence of two witnesses.
3. In a folding portable book support, the ARTHUR A. FULLER. 5 combination, with the stem and its arm, of
the counterbalanoing weight connected to Witnesses: the foot .of said stem and the leg-bars ex- HORACE L. WHEELER, tending from said foot, substantially as speci- JOHN T. BLODGE'ET. fied.
