Warren STATE-s PATENT @rrrcn.
JOHN B. BARTLETT, OF MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA.
MOVABLE LAMP-HOLDER.
QPECIEICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 317,917, dated. May 12, 1-885.
Application filed March 23, 1883.
T0 (1 whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OHN B. BARTLETT, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Minneapolis, county of Hennepin, and State of Minnesota, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Movable Lamp-Hold ers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improved bracket de signed especially for holding lamps, but applicable also to hold other articles requiring suspension.
The invention relates in part to the form of the upper end of the bracket, by which it is adapted to catch over the edge of a vertical piece of furniture, an upright piano, the back of a chair, or any like article.
The invention includes also, the holder in the lower part of the bracket, whereby it is adapted to hold a lamp, whether of bracket or standard form.
The object of the invention is to produce a bracket adapted to be attached to various articles of furniture, to hold securely lamps of various forms of bowl or standard, and to secure simplicity, lightness, and economy.
The bracket is shown in perspective in the accompanying drawing. As shown, it is composed of a single piece of wire.
The stem is composed of two strands of the Wire D E, laid side by side, and connected, preferably, by sheet-metal bands F F. The wires D E are extensions of the loop which forms the holder. This holder consists of circular arms B and O, which lie in a plane at right angles (or approximately so) to the line of the stem. The semicircular parts B G opposite the stem are brought around to the front, and are bent to form a loop, A, which isv a continuous wire with B and G, and is bent to bring the end of said loop below the plane of the semicircular parts B O, and about at the center thereof. This forms the bottom of the bowl-holder. The loop is bent down from the plane of the parts .B- O, as at N O, and then extends in plane parallel with B O, as at L L. When left open, as shown, by not bringing the parts B and 0 together, it serves to receive the standard of a lamp, the bowl resting on the lower part of the holder. This (No model.)
The wires D 13 extend upward to form a clasp or attaching device, as shown. They are bent outward at the upper end of the stem at T T. The horizontal parts R R extend far enough to give steadiness of support and turn up at G G, thence over to the rear at H H and down at l I, forming an attaching-clasp sufficient to pass over an ordinary chair-back or an edge of a piece of furniture. The ends are preferably bent at P and brought together at S, where they may be held by solder or a bit of tube. This gives a form adapted to fit many different articles, and ali'ords a secure grasp.
I may make the article of malleable metal, but prefer steel wire. It may be coated or plated in any manner known to the art. I contemplate also covering the rear surface of the shank with felt or other soft covering, so that it may not injure the article to which the holder is attached I am aware that various forms of brackets have been invented composed of wire and with hooks on the samesueh, for example, as that shown in Letters Patent N 0'. 259,932; and I do not broadly claim a wire bracket, nor do I claim, broadly, an extension of the Wire under a ring to form a bottom.
I may use the holder and shank with other forms of attaching device at the upper end of the shank.
I claim- I l. A bracketfor lamps and other articles requiring suspension, consisting of a stem having an attaching device at its upper end, combined with a holder composed of the semicircular arms B and O and theloop A, formed continuously with B and O, and bent underneath to form the bottom of the holder, all substantially as described.
2. A bracket for lamps and other articles requiring suspension, consisting of a stem having an attaching device at. its upper end and a holder composed of the semicircular arms B O and the loop A, formed continuously with B and O, and bent downward and laterally and then bent upward, over, and inward, and having an opening to admit the down, substantially as shown at G, H, and I, standard of a lamp, all substantially as deand as described.
scribed. JOHN B. BARTLETT.
' 3. Abracket having a stem, D E, and holder In presence ofat its lower end, and provided with an at- FRED ROGERS,
caching device formed by the parts R R, bent W. H. BAILY.
