Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIOE.
GEORGE M. COOPER, OF LITOHFIELD, MICHIGAN.
PRESS FOR PACKING WOOL.
Specication-of Letters Patent No. 31,784, dated March 26, 1861.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE M. COOPER, of Litchfield, Hillsdale county, Michigan, have invented a new and useful Machine for Forming Wool, &c., into Baies; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making part of this specification.
The Object of this invention is a quickly operated device for pressing and binding wool into bales.
Figure l is a perspective view of a press embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same.
A is a rectangular box supported upon legs B and having two adjacent vertical fixed sides C, D. The remaining sides E and F are hinged by their lower edges to the legs B.
H is an open barred rack hinged by one edge la to the stationary side O, and in its closed position its bars resting in notches c in the upper edges of the fixed side O and the hingedside E.
I J is a hook and staple fastening for the top H in its closed position. Rods K hinged at top to the backs of the movable sides E and F and their lower ends passing through staples K on the legs B serve to sustain the sides E and F at any open position that may be desired, and when the box is closed these rods also serve to guide the yoke L. The yoke L consists of a rod bent into a rectangular form and having rollers M. The act of elevating this yoke acts to close the two open sides E and F. Said elevation is effected by means of a lever N whose cross head n is connected by rods O` with the yoke L.
P is a sliding floor or piston which, after the press has been filled and closed, is ele vated by a rod p and lever Q.
R is a rack to enable the lever Q to be secured to any, desired position.
S are grooves for the bands or cords by which the bale is tied. y
The operation of pressing and tying the bale is very simple and rapid. The piston P being depressed and the two hinged sides E and F and the hinged top H thrown Openthe cords or bands are laid in their grooves and the wool is inserted. The lever N is now depressed so as to elevate the yoke L and to close. the sides E and F and thus- The arrangement of a boX for pressing wool .in bales; with the following elements to wit-:two adjacentvertical fixed sides C and D, two adjacent hinged and movable sides E and F, supporting and guide rods K-hinged top H, sliding yoke L and piston P; the whole being combined and operating together in the manner set forth.
In testimony of which invention, I hereunto set my hand.
GEORGE M. COOPER.
