Description
frz/verzin@ HU. C0. NY. (USBORNES PRIJCES UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
YOUNG F. VRIGHI, OF GREEN HILL, GEORGIA.
IMPROVEM ENT' IN COTTON-PRESSES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 28.124, dated May 1, 1860.
To all whom, t may concern,.-
Be it known that I, YOUNG F. WRrcH'r, of Green Hill, in the county of Stewart and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cotton-I-"resses; and I do hereby declare that thefollowing is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference bef ing had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l represents a perspective View of said cotton-press. Fig. 2 represents a vertical cross-section through the same. Fig. 3 represents a longitudinal vertical section through the upper part oi the frame.
My invention relates to the mannerof so securing the revolving screw-nut or burr by which the screw-shaft and follower are operated within a block which is hinged to the upper part of the press-frame as that said block, together with the follower, can be swung around on its hinges to clear the press-box when it is to be filled.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe itsconstruction and operation.
A represents the frame of the press.`
B represents the press-box,
C represents a block of wood -or 1netal,which is composed of two segments, which are bolted together by means of bolts a. The cylindrical screw-nut or burr D, which isset into and turns within the block G, is prevented from moving longitudinally by the tlanges b, and is provided with a square head, c, to which the levers E are secured, by which the screw-nut is to be turned. The follower F, by which the material is compressed, is secured to the lower end of the screw-shaft G, which is run up and down without turning around as the screw-nut is turned.
. II represents a bent iron bar or strongiron band, which passes around the sides and the top of the block O, and the ends of which terminate in journals m, which rest on and can turn in suitable bearings at the upper end of l the frame A, and which constitute `the hinges on which the block C, together with the screwshaft and follower, can be swung out of the way to clear the press-box when the latter is to be filled.
' I represents another iron band by which the block C is secured to the frame A when the cotton is to be compressed by fastening its Vertical ends to the brackets f by means of the pins g. These pins may be made selflocking by the securing them to the springrods h, and by making their ends oblique and the ends of the band I beveled, so that the latter shall push back the pins g when the block C drops down, and that said pins shall be sprung into the holes of the band I by the y action of the springrods lz..
In operating this press the pins g are withdrawn from the band I, and the block C and follower E are swung aroundinto the position represented in red lines in Fig. 2, when they will clear the press-boX,whiclithencanbelled. When theV press-box is lled, the block G and follower are swung back into their original position, and are fastened by the pins g, and the levers E can now be turned, whereby the cotton is pressed, and when reduced to the desired bulk the bale can be removed through the door M. (Represented in red lines in Fig. l.) l
Having thus fully described the nature of my invention, what I claim therein as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
' Arranging the revolving screwnut or burr by which the screw-shaft and follower of a cotton-press are operated within a block which is hinged to the upper part of the frame of said press, for the `purpose of enabling the operator to swing the block and follower on said hinges so as to clear the press-box when it is to be filled, substantially in the manner YOUNG F. VRIGHT.
, herein described.
W'itnesses:
A. B. S'roUGHroN, E. COHEN.
