SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 317,838, dated May 12, 1885.
Application filed November 13, 1884.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, OscAR MUssINAN, J r., a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Pencils, of Vwhich the following is a specification.
ll/Iy invention relates to improvements in lead-pencils; and it consists in the combination, with a case or handle and a lead-receiver, of a split lead-clamp secured to the lead-receiver and provided with a cone, a conical sleeve, which slides on said split clamp and is'arranged to operate upon the cone, and a disk or stop secured to the case.

In the drawings the letter A designates the tubular case or handle, which is made of any convenient length or size. On its lower end the case A tapers, forming part of a cone, a, said cone being provided with an inner bead, c. f
Onto the upper end of the case A is snugly fitted a lead-receiver, B, which has drilled into it a longitudinal hole for the reception of the extension of the split lead-clamp C and the lead E contained therein. rIlhe lead-clamp C is securely glued to the lead-receiver B; or it may be fastened in any other suitable manner.
Near the lower end of the lead-clamp C is formed -a cone, d, the slotg in said lead-clamp extending also through the cone d.
c is a conical sleeve, which slides on the lead-clamp C, and is of such a size that when it is forced upon the cone d the split clamp C is sufficiently tightened upon the lead E contained therein to hold said lead E lirrnly in position.
` F is a disk or stop fitted in the case A, and is secured therein in position by a screw, f, or, by preference, it may be secured, as shown in Fig. 4, by means of two inner beads, f f, formed in the tubular case A, the latter method of fastening being stronger, and also (No model.)

rlhe lead-receiver B, before mentioned, is fitted in the case A so that it requires some little force to push the same backward and forward in the ease A, in order to prevent slipping ofthe lead-receiver when the pencil is in use. If, now, the lead-receiver B, from the position shown in Fig. 3, be drawn backward in the case A the cone d is brought into contact with the sleeve c, and causes said sleeve c to be carried along until it is brought to a stop by the disk F. On further drawing backward the lead-receiver B, the cone d is forced into the sleeve c, and the lead-clamp C is forced upon the lead, Fig.` l. If the lead-receiver B is now pushed forward until the pencil projects beyond the lower part of the case A, or until the sleeve c strikes lightly against the bead a' ou the inner surface of the conical part c of the case, as shown in Fig. 2, the pencil is ready for use.
In order to return the lead from the leadclamp C and allow the same to slide in the lead-receiver B, the lead receiver is pressed forward to such a position that the sleeve c impinges against the bead c on the conical part a of the case A, and is forced back from the cone d. which allows the lead-clamp `C to expand, Fig. 3.
As will be seen from the above description and the drawings, theconstruction and mechanism of'niy improved pencil are extremely simple, but at the same time very efficient and durable, and it allows of adjusting the lead very easily and quickly.
