To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, RALPH RENHoL'rsnN, a citizen of Norway, and residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machinists Clamps, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to machinists clamps and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class which is simple in construction, convenient of operation, and which may be used by machinists, carpenters, joiners and others.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawingforms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a side view of my improved clamp, with part of the construction shown in section; Fig. 2 a section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; and, Fig. 3 a section on the line 33 of Fig. 1.
The main part of my invention comprises a handle portion a provided at one end with a stationary jaw a and the handle a is U- shaped in cross section or provided with a deep longitudinal channel a having equally spaced transverse pins 64*. The supple mental part of my improved clamp consists of a movable and detachable jaw Z) having a head portion 6 through which is passed a screw shaft 0 provided at its outer end with a milled head 0 whereby it may be turned and at its inner end with a swiveled head 0 which operates in connection with the stationary jaw 64- and on a workpiece or article placed between said jaw and the swiveled head 0 The jaw b is also provided with a foot piece 6 adapted to be inserted into the channel a in the handle a and said foot piece is provided with a for wardly directed nose 6*.
The central or body portion of the jaw b is U-shaped in cross section and is provided adjacent to the head 6 in the form of construction shown, with transverse pins (Z and (Z and placed in the body portion of the jaw Z) is a spring f the upper end portion of which is provided with a loop f through which the pin (Z passes and with a finger portion f which bears on the pin (Z2, and
the lower end of said spring is provided with a backwardly directed finger f and the lower end portion of said spring and the finger f are adapted to swing forwardly and backwardly in the chamber formed in the jaw I) by the U-shaped form thereof; The heel portion of the body of the jaw Z) is provided just above the foot 6 with a transverse recess 6 in which one of the pins a is adapted to fit, and the nose f of the spring f formed by the backwardly directed finger f thereof is adapted to bear on the next adjacent pin a forward of that which fits in the recess 6 When the jaw b is in position in the handle a as shown in Fig. 1, the spring f bears on one of the pins a forwardly of said jaw, while the adjacent pin a rearwardly of the jaw fits in the recess 6 and holds said jaw b stationary in the handle a, and when it is desired to detach the jaw Z) and adjust it into a differentposition in the handle a, the said jaw Z) is forced forwardly against the operation of the spring f and the heel portion of the foot 5 is lifted out of the handle and the said jaw detached from the handle. When it is desired to reinsert the jaw 6 into the handle the nose 6 of the foot 6 is first introduced into the channel a and the jaw b is forced forwardly against the operation of the spring f and the heel of the foot 12 is forced downwardly into the handle and the spring f operates to force the jaw backwardly into the position shown in Fig. l and holds said jaw in the handle. The jaw b may thus be adjusted into different positions in the handle a whenever desired and so that it will be nearer to, or farther from the sta tionary jaw o The method of using my improved clamp will be understood by all those familiar with this class of devices and the novel features of the construction herein shown and described and which I desire to claim are found in the supplemental jaw b and the method of connecting it with the handle a, and the means whereby it may be secured in and detached from said handle whenever desired, and its position with reference to the stationary jaw a adjusted.
Having fully described my invention, what by Letters Patent, is
,4} clamp device of the class described, comprising a handle provided at one end with a stationary .jaw, said handle being I claim as new and desire to secure also provided with a longitudinal U-shaped chamber having equally spaced transverse pins, and a detachable and adjust-able supplemental jaw having a foot piece adapted to be inserted into the channel in the handle and provided with a forwardly directed nose, said supplemental jaw being also provided with a head through which is passed a screw shaft, and the body of said supplemental jaw being provided with a spring which bears on one of said transverse pins In testimony that I claim the foregoing 1 as my invention I have signedrny name in presence of the subscribing witnesses this 23rd day of September 1912.
