PATENT ELMER E. MONROE, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
COMBINED PENCIL AND SHRPENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 536,289, dated March 26, 1895.
Application filed September 4, 1894. Serial No. 522,011. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELMER E. MONROE, of Boston, county of Suifolk, State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in a Combined Pencil and Sharpener, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters and figures on the drawings representing like parts.
This invention has for its object to construct a combined pencil and Sharpener, which when assembled in condition for use, has all the appearance and feeling of an ordinary lead pencil. Y
In accordance with this invention the body of the pencil is made in two longitudinal sections, provided with means at the ends lfor attaching them together. .One section is designed to receive the lead, which is held by a suitable clamping device, or other contrivance, and a push rod or plunger is provided for forcing the lead forward as desired. The other section is cut away to receive a small flat tile, properly held therein, and when the two sections are separated it may be used to lliarpen the point of the lead, as an ordinary Figure 1, shows in side elevationva combined pencil and Sharpener embodying this invention; Fig. 2, a plan view of the lead holding section, its inner face being exposed; Fig. 3,:
an edge view and partial, section of the lead holding section shown in Fig. 2; Fig. 4, a plan view of the file holding section, its inner face being exposed, and Fig. 5, a longitudinal section of the file holding section. p
The lead holding section consists of the longitudinal half section a, of thecylindrical body, having a conical or pointed end a', like unto an ordinary lead pencil, with a central hole through it for the lead holding clamp or receiver ai", herein shown as made asa small cylindrical tube, open at each end, extending through the conical or tapered point, and also along the section in a central groove provided for it. This cylindrical tube is cut away at one side, or slotted longitudinally as at o, and one side of said slot is notched as at 0,5, fromvend to end.
The push rod or plungerb, of substantially the same diameter as the lead c, is contained in said tube a2, at the slotted portion thereof, it having a right angular formation at the end which is adapted to enter one or another notch a5.
To advance the lead, the push rod is turned axially until its right angular formation is withdrawn from the notch, and then said rod is pushed against the lead c, after which it is turned back to its normal position, being thus held in place.- l
' The lead holding section has secured to it a cylindrical collar or ferrule d, adjacent the tapered end portion, which projects rearwardly beyond said tapered end portion so as to leave a semicircular opening d. The opposite end of the lead holding section is formed with a more or less contracted semicircular portion d2.
The ile holding section, see Figs. 3 and 4,
consists of a longitudinal half section e, of
the cylindrical body, one end being semicircular to enter the semicircular recess in the collar or ferrule d of the other section, and a cylindrical collar or ferrule e2, is secured to its opposite end which presents a semicircular recess to receive the end d?, of the other halt' or section.
The section e is provided with a longitudinal central groove e3, extending from one end inwardly, which receives the projecting portion of the cylindrical tubular lead advancing contrivance. The section eis cut away or recessed to receive a fiat tile e4, which may be seated therein.
To better enable the parts to be held together I have formed a projection 2,'on the inner end of the tube a2, which enters an un-V ordinary manner.
at the inner end of the I do not desire to limit my invention to the employment of all the features herein shown, as it is obvious that some of them may be omitted, and yet retain novel and meritorious features.
I claim- 1. In a combined pencil and Sharpener, the combination of two longitudinal sections a, e,
IOC)
one adapted to hold the lead and the other the file, and means for attaching said sections together, substantially as described.
2. In a combined pencil and sharpener, the combination of two longitudinal sections a, e, lead c, and advancing eontrivance therefor held by one of said sections, and the tile e4,
held by the other section, and means for at' taching said sections together, substantially f as described.
3. In a combined pencil and Sharpener, the combination of two longitudinal sections, each having at one end a cylindrical ferrule which presents a semicircnlar recess for the end of the other section, lead held by one section, and a file held by the other section, substantially as described.
4. In a combined pencil and Sharpener, the combination of two longitudinal sections, one adapted to hold lead, and the other adapted to hold a file, and means for attaching said sections together, and a contrivance for advancing the lead in the lead-holding section, consisting of a tube a2 containing the lead, slotted longitudinalir as at a4, and notched as at a5, and a push rod b contained in said tube, having a right angular follower adapted to enter one or another notch, substantially as described.
5. In a combined pencil and Sharpener, the combination of two longitudinal sections, one adapted to hold thelead, and the other adapted to hold the file, means for attaching the ends of said sections together, and a projection as 2, at the middle of one of said sections adapted to enter a recess formed in the other section, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ELMER E. MONROE.
