STORM, HAT.
No. 317,677. Patented May 12 1885-.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HOWARD M. SAWYER, OF MEDFORD, MASSACHUSETTS.
' STORM-HAT.
SPECIPICATIONforming part of Letters Patent No. 317,677, dated May 12, 1-883. Application filed March 27, 1884. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HOWARD M. SAWYER, of Medford, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Storm-Hats, of which the following is a specification.
This improvement relates to that class of waterproof hats especially adapted for the use of seamen and others whose business or avocation involves exposure to the weather, known as storm-hats or souwesters and its object is to provide a hat blocked or formed into the shape shown, whereby the face may be protected from the direct action of the rain or snow without interfering with the ability of the wearer to look aloft, and which will also guide the water to and shed it from the rear edge of the hat-rim.
Great difficulty has heretofore been experienced in constructing a hat which will produce all the above results, as if the rim is bent down in front, while the rain is prevented from driving against the face ofthe wearer, he cannot look aloft, and also the water drips over the front and side edges as well as the rear edge ofthe rim 3 and, on the other hand, if the front portion of the rim is bent up at the point where it joins the body of the hat, while the wearer can look aloft, and the water is to some extent conducted back from the front, the face of the wearer is completely exposed to the driving rain or snow.
In the accompanying drawings, in which similar letters of reference indicate like parts, Figure l is a view in perspective of a stormhat or souwester embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section of the same. Fig. 3 is' a transverse vertical section.
A represents the body of the hat, and B the rim, both made of oiled or water-proof material. This rim is blocked and formed into the shape shown--that is to say, with its front portion, 13, first bent downward and slightly bulged outward, and then bent upward at B, thus forming the channel or gutter a, and with its rear portion, 13, much broader than the 'front, and bent downward continuously, and
without any channel or gutter at its edge. The sides of the rim grow more narrow toward the front, and the channel or gutter a gradually grows more shallow from the front rearward until it ceases entirely, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. By bending the rim downward at B the rain or snow is prevented from driving against the face by bending it upward at B the wearer is enabled to look aloft; and by sloping the rear portion continuously downward the graduated channel or gutter a conducts the water to the rear and discharges it on the cape of the wearer.
As the hat is blocked into the form shown, it will always remain in shape.
Having thus fully described my invention, what 1 claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The herein-described improved storm-hat provided'with the rim B, having its front portion bent downward at B and upward at B,
having its rear portion, B bent continuously downward, and provided with a graduated channel or gutter, at, extending from the front edge of the rim toward, but not around, the rear edge of the same, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
