UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS KIRWAN, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
LOCK.
SPECIFICA'IIQN forming part of Letters Patent No. 317,547, dated May 12, 1885.
(No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, THOMAS EKIRWAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Locks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists in certain improvements in locks, one of said improvements being that the bolt of thelock when not in use as a lock is held by a catch, which catch, when released, allows a spring to throw out the bolt and lock the door, from which position it is returned to the catch by means of a key, the key being only used to unlock the door.
Another improvement consists in a device by means of which, when locked, the bolt can be securely fastened from the inside of a door in such a manner that the lock cannot be picked from the outside or opened with its key-a matter of great importance in rooms to hotels and lodging-houses-nothing of a similar kind having, to my knowledge, yet been in use. 1
In the drawings I have shown the lock as connected with the latch patented to me J anuary 25, 1881. Figure 1 shows a section through the line x w of Fig. 2; Fig. 2, a View of the inside of the lock with the cover broken away, said cover being shown in Fig. 3. Fig. 4 shows the case of the lock with the bolt and latch thrown out. Figs. 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9 are variations of my device for holding the bolt when thrown out.
A represents the door, B B the case of the lock, 0 a latch, and D the bolt.
On the bolt D is a hasp, E, with which a spring'catch, G, attached to the removable part B of the case, engages. A spring, H, working in a chamber formed by a rib, J, on the bolt, and a rib, J, on the case B, serves to throw the bolt out when the spring-catch is released. From the outside of the door a pin, K, passes through the caseand rests against the end of the catch G, and from the inside of the door another pin, K, passes through the catch G and screws into the pin K. By pressing the pin K or pulling the pin K the catch is released, and the spring H throws out the bolt, from which position it is returned to the catch by means of a key.
To fasten the door securely from the inside, so that the lock cannot be picked, I perforate the case B and the bolt D, the perforations being so arranged that when the bolt is thrown out they will come opposite one another, and a pin thrust into them will prevent the operation of a key or a lock-picking device.
(1 represents the perforation in the case, and b that in the bolt; 0, the pin, and d the escutcheon through which the pin works.
In Figs. 5 and 6 of the drawings I have shown the pin 0 as provided with a feather, e, the escutcheon being formed with a slot, 6, for allowing passage therethrough of the same. The pin is also provided with a helical spring, 0, which surrounds it, and bears between a shoulder formed by its enlarged end and the inner surface of the portion B of the casing. By inserting the pin through the escutcheon against the action of the spring 0' thereon, and then turning said pin until the feather is brought behind the wall or front of said escutcheon, the pin is maintained in a locked connection with the bolt, as will be apparent.
The escutcheon may be formed with a groove or screw on its inner side, and a stud be provided on the pin to move therein. (See f, Fig. 7.) Instead, however, of providing the stud on the pin, the latter may be screw threaded to work in a corresponding surface in the escutcheon.
In Fig. 8 the escutcheon is represented as being double, in order to form a space and a covering for the pin-head, the outer portion thereof being perforated to admit a key, g, that enters the pin for operating it.
I claim as my invention- 1. In a lock, the combination, with the easing provided on its inner side with a springcatch and the rib J, of the bolt formed with rib J and a hasp engaging the spring-catch, a spring working in the space formed by the ribs, and the pins K K, passing through the casing and spring-catch, whereby the latter may be released, substantially in the manner set forth and described.
2. In a lock, the combination, xvith a casing provided on its inner side with a spring-catch and rib J, and having perforation a, of a bolt formed with a hasp and rib J, and provided with perforation b, the spring H, and a pin passing through one side of a door and into said perforations in the casing and bolt, Whereby the latter is prevented from being thrown back from the opposite side of the door, substantially as described.
3. In a door-lock, the combination, with the spring-actuated bolt formed with a hasp and the rib J, and the casing provided on its inner side with a spring-catch and the rib J, of the pins K K, passing through the casing and spring-catch from opposite sides, and formed at their contiguous ends to be united, the same adapted to operate the spring-catch for releasing the bolt, substantially as described.
4. The combination, with a lock having its THOMAS KIRW'AN.
