HORSE-BOOT.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 317,525, dated May 12, 1885.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, JosEPH FENNELL, of Cynthiana, in the county of Harrison and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Horse-Boots; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to an improvement in horse-boots.

In Letters Patent No. 175,062, granted me on March 21, 1876, I showed and described a hoof-boot and speedy-cut boot of improved construction, united by means of flexible strips, the ends of which were secured to the upper and lower sections by being stitched thereto. This connection, while it answered the purpose very well for a short time, was found to be a trifle too stiff in its action, and was found unable to withstand the constant bending back and forth to which it was subjected without breaking. No matter how tough the leather or other flexible material used might be, the fibers would one after an other break, and the connections at last separate as though they had been cut in two.

Thei'object of my present invention is to provide a connection between the lower section or hoof-boot and the upper section or speedy-cut boot, which shall have a quick action, and will withstand the wear caused by the backward and forward movements of the hoof; and with these ends in view my invention consists in a metallic or non-fibrous loop secured to one of the boot-sections, and atough flexible strap folded to form a bight for receiving one bar of the loop, the two ends of the strap being secured to the other boot-section.

My invention further consistsin certain features of construction and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claim.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a detached view of the connection; and Fig. 2 is a rear view of the boot, showing the connection in position for use.

A represents the lower section or hoof-boot, and a the upper section or speedy-cut boot. The lower section, A, is provided with a metal spur, B, for engaging the shoe, and witha strap, b, for securing the boot snugly against the hoof. The upper portion of the section A is further provided on the inside with apad, 0, adapted to rest in contact with the upper front portion of the hoof at the point where the hoof unites with the flesh. The upper section, a, is lined with buckskin or other soft and firm material, and is provided with a padded strap, D, for securing it to the leg. The section a is also rc-enforced by a piece of leather, a, secured to its face, conforming to its shape and covering the greater portion of the section. The lower and upper sections as thus constructed are quite similar to those described in the patent referred to above, and are not claimed as novel in the present application.

Between the lower edges of the section a. and the re-enforcing piece a one of the sides of an oblong metallic loop, E, is secured,

preferably by being stitched in when the re enforcing piece a" is secured to the piece a. A strip, 0, of tough flexible material-buckskin, for exampleis passed through the loop E, and the ends, being laid together, are stitched betweenthe leather forming the body of the section A and the pad 0. The loop E is thus secured in the bight of the strap 6, and a hinge-joint is thereby formed. The action of this joint is quick and easy, the rotation of the side bar of the loop E within the bight of the strap 6 being free from the effects of dampness, which has hitherto rendered the connection stiff, and the strap remaining stationary the fibers are not broken, as heretofore, by the bending back and forth with each movement of the hoof.

It is evident that the loop and strap might occupy reversed positions, and that metallic loops of other shapes than that shown might be employed, and that loops of other nonfibrous material than metal might be substituted for the metal without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention; henceI do not wish to limit myself strictly to the con struction herein set forth; but,
