Be it known that I, GEORGE E. SAUNDEns, a citizen of the United States, residing at Burden, in the county of Cowley and State of Kansas,.have invented new and useful Improvements in Mechanical Powers, of which the following is a specication, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to mechanical powers; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a view in perspective of a mechanical 'power embodying my improvements, arranged inconnection with a derrick, drill-rope, and drill for drilling a well. Fig. 2 is a plan View showing the gate in both full and dotted lines. Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical sectional view on the line m a: in Fig. 2; and Fig. 4 is a detail view, showing the rock-shaft and the angle-lever and guide-bails on the arms of said lever. Fig. 5 is a view in perspective of a small pulley and block.
Referring by letter to the accompanying drawings, A and B designate the sills, which are provided with metal strap-loops C and C', one each on opposite sides of the bed-plate D, which latter is let into recesses in the upper faces of said sills and is rmly secured thereto by spikes or stout wooden pins. The strap-loops C and C are provided in order that stakes may be driven through them into the ground to secure the machine iirmly'in place when it is in operation.
' Near one end of the bed-plate D, I provide a vertical shaft or journal, E, upon which I mount the driving or operating wheel F. The hub F of the wheel F is made of hard wood, provided with a metal box, F2, to permit lubrication and to prevent wear. The spokes or arms G of the wheelF are made also of wood, and their tenons extend clear into the box in the hub. These spokes Gare strongly braced near their outer ends by wooden braces H, and between these braces and the hub they are further strengthened byametal ring, I,which is secured upon the spokes just inside of the stakes I. The drill-rope I2 is to be coiled around the outside of the stakes I when the machine is to be transported from place to place. The forward faces of the spokesG are slightly rounded 0E at their outer ends, and these rounded portions are provided with metal wear-plates J. A sweep, K, is secured upon the hub and to two diametrically-opposite spokes of the wheel by metal straps K. At the other end of the bed-plate from the point of location of the wheel F, I provide a gate-frame, L, in which I pivot a gate, M. This gate M is provided at its front end with a friction-roll, N, which is journaled on a vertical shaft, N, having its bearings in the projecting ends of metal straps N2, secured to the upper and lower edges of the gate M. The gate M is arranged to swing in an open frame, O; but its throw is limited by the posts I? at the sides of said frame O.
In the face of the gate M, in the side opposed to the direction in which the wheel rotates, is provided a hook, Q, to which one end of a connecting-rod, R, is engaged.
S designates a derrick,which is erected over the place where the well is to be bored. This derrick S is provided near its lower end with a rock-shaft, T, which has its bearings in the two parallel poles of the derrick quite near the ground. This rock-shaft T is provided with an angle-lever, U, having two arms, Q' Qtwhich are strengthened by a brace-rod,U. At their lower ends the arms of the angle-leverU are provided with pivoted metal bails I3 I4. The outer end of the connecting-rod R is attached to the bail I4, and to the bail I3 is attached one end of the drill-rope I2, which passes up over the pulley X,and has the drilling-tool attached to its depending end. When the wheel F is rotated by means of the sweep, the projecting end of one of the spokes strikes against the outer end of the gate M and moves it to the position shown in solid lines in Fig. 2. The rod R, which is connected to the gate and to the angular lever U, lowers the upper arm of said lever, and thereby raises the drilling-tool a distance of about two feet. A'When the end of the spoke passes by the gate and releases it, the gate is drawn back bythe gravity of the drilling-tool to the position indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 2. Continued rotation of the wheel causes the drilling-tool to be raised and dropped very rapidly, and thereby causes it to dig the well.

When it is desired to raise the drillingtool from the Well, the rod R is disconnected from the bail It, a pulley, Z, which I have illustrated at Fig. 5, is attached to said bail, and
5 the drill-rope is passed over said pulley and Wound upon the stakes I by rotating the Wheel.
Having thus fully described my invention,
what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Io Letters Patent of the United States, is
l. The combination of the bed, the Wheel having projecting spokes and asWeep, and the pivoted gate with the derrick having the rockshaft and angle-lever, and the'connecting-rod r 5 for connecting one of the arms of the angular lever to the gate, substantially as described.
2. The combination of the bed, the Wheel having projecting spokes, stakes, or pins I and a sweep, and the pivoted gate with the derrick, the rock-shaft, and the angular lever U, having bail I4, connecting-rod R, that is secured to the gate and that is adapted to be connected to and disconnected from the bail I, and a pulley that is adapted to be hung to said bail when the rod R is disconnected therefrom, for the purpose set forth, substantially as described.
