Description

(Model) V P. HELM. Earth and Rock Drilling Machine No. 240,706. Patented April 2-6; 1881;
' UNITE STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PHINEAS HELM, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
EARTH AND ROCK DRILLING MACHINE SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 240,706, dated April 26, 1881,
Application filed January 29, 1881. (ModeL) To altwhom tt may concern.-
Be it known that I, PHINEAS HELM, of St. Louis, in the county of St. Louis, and in the State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Earth and Rock Drilling Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
This invention relates to an improved earthboring and rock-drilling machine combined; and it has for its objects to provide a means whereby the drill will be assisted in its movement when elevated, as more fully hereinafter specified. This object I attain by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my invention entire, and Fig. 2 detached sectional views of the trip by which the drill is operated.
The letter A indicates a derrick which is constructed of timber or other suitable material in the usual manner. The said derrick is provided with the usual transverse shaft, B, journaled in suitable bearings. The said shaft is provided with a drum, B; by means of which a rope or chain may be employed, which may be connected with suitable horse or other power machinery, in order to operate the said shaft so as to rotate it. The said shaft also carries a cog-wheel, G, which intermeshes with a pinion, D, on a crank-shaft, E, by means of which the apparatus may beoperated by hand. The said shaft B is provided at one end with a disk, E, having a cam, F, on its face. The said disk is rigidly attached to said shaft in any convenient manner. The said shaftB is provided, also, with a loosely-mounted disk, Gr, having an arm, H, to which one end of a link, K, secured to the rope K, is attached, the said rope passing over the pulley L at the top of the derrick, the drill M being secured to the free end of the rope. The disk G is provided with an abutment, g, on its face, adjoining the face of disk G in such mannner that as the disk E rotates the cam will strike the abutment g of the disk G, so as to elevate and drop the drill.
The letter M indicates a counter balance or weight secured to shaft B in such position as to counterbalance and assist in lifting the drill as the shaft is rotated.
The operation of my invention is as follows: Upon rotating the shaft B the cam of thedisk thereon at suitable intervals engages the cam carrying the arm which operates the drill-rope, the weight or counter-balance serving to assist in elevating the weight, and prevent any sudden jerk or pull upon the men or animals operating the apparatus.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
1. The combination, in a drilling-machine, of the driving-shaft B, with the disk E, provided with a cam and secured upon the shaft, and the disk G, provided with a radial arm and with an abutment upon its inner face in position to be acted upon by the cam of the first-m en tion ed disk, said disk G being loosely arranged upon the shaft, and the drill-rope bein g attached to its radial arm, substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination, in a drilling-machine,
of the driving-shaft B, with the dri1l-operating mechanism and a counter-balancephrranged upon said driving-shaft.
3. The combination, in a drilling-machine, of the driving-shaft B, with the disk E, rigid upon the shaft and provided with a cam, the disk G, arranged loosely upon the shaft, and having an abutmentwhich is acted upon at certain periods by the cam, and the counterbalance M, secured upon the driving'shaft, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 18th day of December, 1879.
PHINEAS HELM.
